TAKING A GOOD LOOK — Early customers at Saturday's Brownies-Girl Guides bazaar at Huron Park
had an' excellent choice of goodies to select from. Having a good look are Freda Spicer, Bonnie Barr and

When you deck the halls and
rooms of your home for the
holiday season do you leave a trail
of pine needles and debris
behind?
Do you know how to trim the
base of your Christmas tree to
enhance its appearance, yet
protect floors and carpets from
stains when you water it?
A few simple tips can help you
make the Christmas season more
fun and less work and save you
energy and fuss.
For instance, wrap your tree in
an old sheet or blanket before
carrying it into your home. Once
you have the tree in its stand,
place it on several green plastic
garbage bags in the position you
have chosen. Then carefully
remove the cover from the tree so
that all debris remains in the
cover. The versatile plastic bags
will also protect your floor or
carpet from stains when you
water the tree.
To achieve an attractive and
festive setting for your tree,
arrange several more of the
Christmas - green plastic bags
around its stand and then simply
spray the bags with artificial
snow. Keep your tree well
watered. Dry trees are fire
hazards and shed needles faster.
While stringing lights and
attaching ornaments to your tree,
wear rubber gloves or a thick pair
of Cotton gloves to prevent
scratches. Gloves will also help
you avoid getting the sticky pine
pitch, which most trees exude, on
your hands.
When the time comes to take
down the tree, again wrap it in a
sheet or blanket to prevent a trail
of pine needles, broken branches
and old icicles as you remove it
from your home. The versatile,
plastic garbage bags that served as
protection and decor under your
tree can now be used to dispose of
any remaining debris.

The Tweedsmuir history and

Mrs. A. Rundle and Mrs. Lloyd

Regardless of all the friction
the first Christmas card stirred up
it created a custom that is part of
the tradition of Christmas today.
Its greeting, 'A Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year to You', is
still the most popular message
sent out.
Although many deplore the
thought of getting down to the
job of signing and addressing
Christmas cards it's still a warm
friendly way of letting people
know we're thinking about them
and wishing them well.
Good Public Relations
In reading over reports of
recent meetings I see many new
slates of officers include a press
reporter. I am heartened by this.
For, if your organization
wants good publicity, it is indeed
important that you have such an
officer and that she or he takes
the duties seriously.
Several times, throughout the
year, we, at this office, get
complaints from some
organizations who say they don't
receive enough publicity in the
paper. Very often they lay their
complaint after a special event
has taken place in their group.
There is really no way we can
know about or cover every
meeting or event that takes place
in the community. But we ARE
interested in these happenings

With Christmas coming up fast,
you have probably dug out your
Christmas card list and may have
even started to get your cards.ut.
How should we sign our cards?
According to the etiquette book I
have at hand, there are a few
simple rules.
When a card is sent by husband
and wife, the person who writes
the card follows the normal
courtesy of signing his or her
name last.
However, if the children's
names are to be added, father
signs first, followed by mother
and then the children beginning
with the eldest down to the
youngest. It is quite correct to
substitute 'and the family', or if
you wish, you may sign the card,
`From the John Doe's .
In addressing envelopes, if the
card is intended for the whole
family it is proper to write Mr. &
Mrs. John Doe and the family,
and a personal message on the
card is in keeping with the spirit
of the season.
It is also quite acceptable to
use colored inks as this adds to
festive touch, but envelopes
should never be addressed by
typewriter.
As usual, as with any
etiquette, the best rule of thumb
is to follow your own good
judgement when deciding how to
sign and address your cards. The
relationship with each name on
your list will dictate the type and
manner of signature. But keep in
mind that, however you sign your
card, it is a reflection of yourself.
In 1843, Henry Cole, a busy
English gentleman, surveyed the
long list of friends to whom he
owed letters and wished to send
Christmas wishes of prosperity
and goodwill.
He suggested to a good friend,
who was also an artist, that he
design a Christmas greeting which
Cole could simply sign and
address and save him a great deal
of time and handwork.
When the card was published it
aroused so much interest that
about 1,000 copies were printed
and sold for a shilling. Only 12 of
them are known to be in
existence today and, of course,
are collectors items.
The artist designed the card in
three panels. The middle one
depicted a wealthy family making
merry over a sumptuous
Christmas dinner while the two
side panels represented the
feeding and clothing of the poor.
It caused considerable
controversy and the artist was

All we ask is that the reports
be sent in by Tuesday noon; that
the copy, particularly names, be
legible. Typing (double spaced) is
best but good handwriting is fine.
Don't worry about your writing
ability ..,just be clear in what you
are saying.
If your organization has
adopted an unusual project, or
something worthwhile or out of
the ordinary has been said, this is
what we are most interested in, In
other words, we want the type of
news that might interest you if
you were a casual reader. A report
looses its interest if filled with
items of little consequence.
If your group is having a
special speaker or doing
something which you think might
merit us sending a reporter, please
tell us about it several days in
advance and we will try to see
what we can do.
Again, if you have an idea for
a picture that would be either
decorative or interesting, tell us
about it well in advance, and we
do appreciate it if the people and
props are ready when the
photographer arrives. He may be
running on a tight schedule and
have pictures to take in another
place in a few minutes. Please try
to understand that 'sometimes'
out of necessity, pictures have to
be taken at our convenience.
We are anxious to give you the
publicity your organization
deserves in the coming year, but
we can only do it with your
co-operation.
