Requests have gone out to most groups in town to sponsor a float or clowns or some type of entry. We are pleased to report that the sporting scene should be well represented. The Exeter Minor Hockey Association will have a float carrying representatives of all house league minor hockey categories. To round out the sporting end of the parade, the South Huron junior Panther football team, Huron-Perth Conference champions for the second consecutive year will be on parade along with the school's cheer leaders. We probably shouldn't say that the football and hockey floats will complete the sports aspect, because the snowmobile segment will be out in full force, especially if the weatherman gives us any semblance of the snow received early last week. Old home week The persons that have said over the past couple of years that expansions will hurt the quality of play in the National Hockey league may not have been too far wrong. During the last couple of weeks a goodly number of NHL favorites have come out of retirement and will help their clubs not only on the ice but at the box office as well. The latest to return to action in Montreal's rough and tough customer John Ferguson. Fergie will not only bolster the Canadiens weak scoring attack this year but also help them in the fisticuffs department. In their first trip to Boston this year, the Montreal club was trounced 6-1 and took a profound beating in a couple of fights. The rambunctious left winger who retired only three days before the start of the schedule for business reasons, announced his return to hockey November 13 following two lengthy meetings with Montreal GM Sam Pollock. Both Don Marshall and Phil Goyette also recently ended their retirements and signed contracts with the new Buffalo Sabres, a move that will undoubtedly help the NHL expansion team both at the box office and on the ice. The fourth, Bob Baun found himself back in his old stomping grounds with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Now there is speculation that the trend of returning old faces will continue with Carl Brewer likely wearing a Toronto uniform again after the Leafs and Detroit get together on trade talks. There's no doubt the change of heart to play on the part of Ferguson provoked the most discussion and surprise around the NHL, The 'bad man' has been sorely missed. • Ferguson, 32-year-old veteran of seven NHL seasons in which he scored 129 goals and had 1,052 minutes in penalities, found time for hockey again after the knitwear firm of which he was a partner was sold. He was itching to get back into the game and Pollock readily made it worthwhile for Fergy to come out of retirement. Fergy agreed to finish out the two-year-contract he signed last year but has been assured of ahealthy raise for 1971-72. Although Ferguson missed 28 games through injuries and a controversial suspension last season he still managed 19 goals and 13 assists to establish himself as probably the most valuable player to the team. Now the Canadiens, riddled by injuries the first two months of the schedule — losing ace scorer Yvan Cournoyer and Jacques Laperriere for several games, are hoping Fergy's desire will lift them to real contention in the East Division. To do so, however, Ferguson will have to start scoring goals to spark the team from its recent slump. Wrestling tourney The second annual Red and Black wrestling tournament will be held at South Huron District High School, Friday, December 11. Sponsored by the local school, the tourney will bring six top notch high school grappling squads together and will start with preliminary events at three o'clock in the afternoon. The final rounds in the 14 different weight categories will get underway at seven o'clock at night. The general public is invited to attend this fine sporting attraction. The evening admission is only twenty-five cents, Waterloo Collegiate and Cameron Heights from the Kitchener area will be on hand along with Wheable and Oakridge high schools of London and Central Huron of Clinton in addition to the South Huron team. Early in the second period, the two teams traded goals to keep Mitchell in front by two goals. Jim Avery scored for Mitchell with Ron Lindenfield getting his first of three for the locals. Before the second period ended diminutive Steve Murley scored on an unassisted effort to cut the Exeter goal deficit to one. In the first minute of play in the third session Lindenfield tied the count on a three-way passing effort with Larry Haugh and Steve Murley and nine minutes later he fired what proved to be the winner on a play with Haugh. The first insurance counter came from the stick of Randy Preszcator at 16.55 with assists going to Larry Laye and Bob Rowe, Laye sewed the game up for good with a successful shot with only 11 seconds left in the game. Helping to set up the play were Preszcator and O'Rourke. Glover Gets Equalizer Pete Glover's goal at 10:21 of for the Panthers. Larry Lippert scored the "hat trick" for the Boston team. Doug Stormes scored three times to lead the second period Belmont scoring and Landon added a lone counter. Start quickly The Hawks scored three times in the first period against Hensall Friday night and went on to record a decisive 7-3 victory. The other marker was shot by Steve Murley with Joe O'Rourke assisting, The second period was even as far as scoring was concerned. Fred Elder was the lone Co-Op player able to put the puck behind John Hayter in the Exeter net. • High Scoring In Tavistock, Thursday night, the Hawks scored early and often in posting 10-2 win. The club's leading point getter, Larry Haugh scored the first two goals of the game, the first unassisted and the second with the help of line-mate Ron Lindenfleld. Don Winhod came back with the first Tavistock counter and before the period closed Pete Glover scored his first of three markers on a solo effort. In the second period, the Hawks got four goals from the same number of performers. Scoring in single fashion were Steve Murley, Bob Rowe, Larry Laye and Glover. Picking up second period assists were Bob Rowe, Randy Preszcator and Larry Haugh. The third period produced four Hawk scores again with Pete Glover finding the mark on two occasions and Haugh hitting once to complete their hat trick performances. The fourth Hawk marker was Well, another week of the hockey wars is complete and Lucan met Lambeth and Hensall Wednesday, Lucan played host to the Lambeth flyers. In this game the Irish put their six straight wins on the line and just about gave the Flyers an early Christmas present, the game ending in a 4.4 tie. In the first period the visitors took a 2-Q lead with goals by Gregg Steels and Terry Davis. Lucan led in penalties 6-2. Jeff Craig who wears number 3 got 4 of these and looked like he was going to become the goat of the game. Then, in the second period Jim Hearn picked up two goals, one at 12:50 and 50 seconds later his second, then Craig 11 seconds later got his first of two goals. Terry Davis scored his second of the evening and the Ladies curling well underway Play has started in the three divisions of the ladies leagues at the Exeter curling club. After two weeks of action, a rink headed by Melva Ecker has 24 points to lead the Tuesday afternoon competition. Close behind in second and third places, respectively are foursomes skipped by Lois Learn and Lee Dobbs. The Wednesday division with three weeks of play completed has Marg Murley 's foursome out in front with 34 points. Marg McCarter has her group in second place with 321/2 points while Helen Burton's rink holds down third spot another point back. - Competition in the Thursday section is also close. Janet Lovell's rink has 27 Jioints, good for the lead with Edna Busche and her rink in second place at 25 points and Marg Strang and her crew at 24 points. No changes in dart loop The Dark Angels continue to lead the Exeter Legion mixed dart league by a comfortable seven points while only two points separate the next five teams. The leaders possess a season point total of 38. The Sharpshooters are all alone in second spot with 31 points and then the closeness starts. The BJ's and Late Niters each have 30 points while the Doublers and Itchy Four are all even another point behind. Bill Smith and Marg Wragg continue to lead their respective groups in games won with 16 and 13 respectively. Last week's scores were: Dart Sharks 4 — Winkers 1 Itchy Four 4 — Swimmers 1 B & J's 4 — B & A's 1 Dark Angels 3 — Scotties 2 Sharpshooters 3 — Doublers 2 Late Niters 3 — Shiphunters 2 Noisy Ones 3 — Canners 2 D & S's 3 — Featherflights 2 High score for novice The Exeter novice hockey club continued their winning ways in Shamrock league play at the Lucan arena, Saturday afternoon by swamping Ilderton by a score of10-0. The locals now boast four consecutive wins in league play and have scored 37 goals while their opposition have been able to score on only three occasions. Perry Pooley scored once in each period to lead the Exeter scoring attack against Ilderton. Brad Taylor and Paul Pooley were close behind with two goal efforts each while single scores were notched by Dave Bogart, Steve Skinner and Danny Bell. Two Exeter goalies saw action in the game, one at each end of the rink. Both goaltenders played well. The excellent play of Tom Hodgins and Kevin McCarman spoke well for coach Bill Neils coaching. Sunday, Lucan travelled to Hensall to play the Hensall 0o-Ops. All good things come to an end and our win streak was Stopped with an 8 to 5 loss to the Co-Ops. In the first period the rookies from Lucan out scored the home team 3 to 1 with goals by Allan Kraut, Bob Evans and Jim Macklem. Hensall's only goal came off the stick of Shane McKinnon. In the second period Jim Hearn and Jack Bradley each scored once while John McKinley and Brian Campbell scored for the Co-Ops. The third period belonged to the home team who scored five Unanswered goals. Rod Chapman, got one while John McKinley and Brian Campbell each scored twice to get hat tricks for the day. Hensall was definitely the better team as the third period proved. Without making excuses the fighting Irish did miss Dave Revington who was sitting out a one game suspension and Brad Barclay who re-injured himself against Belmont. Once again Lucan were unable to stay out of the penalty box picking up nine to the Co,•Op's seven, Five of the Irish penalties came in the disastrous third period. I don't know if the Hensall fans read this paper or these write-ups but if they do, I want them to' know that we consider them among the best teams in the league. So the next meeting should be a beauty. Last night Tavistock came to Lucan and I hope you enjoyed the show. 0 4
