of the Huron County Board of
Education in Clinton, board
members rescinded their former
motion regarding kindergarten
classes throughout the county -
and failed to reach agreement on
a new policy when four new
motions were made and
defeated.
The former motion which had
been accepted by the board was
• to have a uniform policy on
kindergarten classes throughout
Huron - that starting January 1,
1971 in schools where
transportation is a factor,
kindergarten classes would be
held all day every other day
basis. The only exception to this
motion was the McKillop
schools who would have
continued with their present
system until the Seaforth school
addition was opened or
September 1, 1971 whichever
came first.
The subject was re-opened at
4 Monday's meeting following
three day notice by James D.
Taylor, Hensall. John Broadfoot
was the only member of the
board opposed to reopening the
subject.
Taylor then made the first
motion - that beginning this fall
in schools where transportation
is a factor, kindergarten be held
on half day every day system
from September 1 to December
31 with the parents providing
the noon-hour transportation
and on a full-day every other
day basis from January 1 to the
44 end of June with the board
providing transportation.
There was no seconder for
this motion.
Gordon Moir then moved that
the system for kindergarten
classes in Huron County remain
unchanged from the present
system where, by the director's
admission, almost every
conceivable method of operating
kindergarten is presently
employed in the county schools.
"I can't see why the board
would allow a slipshod situation
like this to exist," stated
Vice-chairman Bob Elliott who
moved an amendment to Moir's
motion.

school year, and where the
principal agrees, kindergarten
classes may be held on a half-day
every day basis with the board
providing the transportation at
noon-hour for the children
involved.
Both the amendment and the
original motion by Moir were
defeated.
Mrs. Marilyn Kunder,
Seaforth, then asked to make a
motion. She moved that in
schools where transportation is a
factor, kindergarten students
attend classes half-day every day
from September 1 to December
31 with the board assuming the
cost of the noon:hour
transportation and from the
January 1 to June 30, students
attend kindergarten classes on an
all-day every day basis.
"You're saying then that the
maximum cost estimated by the
board will then be the cost,"
pointed out Elliott, "and you
are forcing the schools presently
operating kindergarten on a
full-day every other day basis to
change to a new system."
Mrs. Kunder nodded in the
affirmative, It was pointed out
the maximum extra
transportation costs would be
between $35,000 and $40,000
annually,
The motion was defeated with
only two persons in favor,
Jim Taylor quickly moved to
have the matter tabled until the
next regular meeting,
Wednesday, December 16.

home of Mrs. Allan Somers (nee

Grade 13 geography students
at South Huron District High
School have been getting a first
hand look at politics at the
county and municipal level in
the past few weeks.
Teacher David McClure, a
candidate for council in Stephen
Township, reports that the study
has been an attempt to acquaint
the students with local
government and its problems.
Over the past weeks, they
have been assigned to attend
council . meetings in Exeter,
Grand Bend, Frensall and the
Townships of Hay, Stephen and
Usborne, as well as the county
board of education meetings and
a session of the Ausable River
Conservation Authority.
This included the recent
nomination meetings staged in
the area communities.
McClure said he has been
concerned with the lack of
interest in local government by
the citizens of area communities.
He said he fears more and
more control of local bodies will
be signed over by neglect to
larger more remote bodies if the
lack of interest continues.
The SHDHS staff _ member
said he and the students
appreciated the co-operation and
interest shown by many men
and women who made the
students welcome at their
meetings.
The students will be making
oral and written reports on their
findings later this month on the
following basis:

township was named by
acclamation at Friday s
nomination meeting.
Wilson Hodgins was returned
for another two year term as
Reeve and his council will
include Joseph Haskett, James

Douglas Tuttle.
Lorne Barker was also
nominated for a council seat but
did not qualify.
At Oranton, Kenneth
Hodgins, Elmer Summers and
Robert Foster will comprise the
three-man board of trustees.
