Hawks back on win streak,
lead district junior loop
The Exeter Hawks took over
undisputed possession of first
place in the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" Western
grouping with a decisive 9-0 win
over the Lambeth Flyers on
Exeter ice, Sunday afternoon.
The Hawks also ran
roughshod over the Hensall
Co-Ops in another home game
Friday night by a score of 11-1
and now have seven wins and a
tie good for 15 points in nine
league starts.
The next league start has the
Hawks in Tavistock tonight,
Thursday and back on home ice
Friday night to take on the
Hensall Co-Ops again.
they scored before two minutes
had elapsed and increased the
goal output to five before the
period was over.
Bob Rowe started the scoring
at 1.13 as he completed a
three-way passing effort with
Larry Laye and Randy
Preszcator.
Four other members of the
Hawks hit the scoreboard before
the initial period was history.
Peter Kleinstiver and Steve
Murley scored within a space of
five seconds near the five minute
mark and the others were added
later by Tom Anderson and
Larry Laye.
Larry Haugh picked up two
assists while Brian Bestard and
Randy Preszcator were credited
with single assists.
Early in the second session,
defenceman Pete Glover found
the range on a hard shot with
Bob Rowe assisting and Murley
scored his second of the
afternoon with Haugh helping
out.
Brian Bestard scored the
Goalie back
After missing three games
because of illness, goalie John
Hayter was back in the nets
Sunday afternoon to chalk up
his first shutout of the season.
The Hawks left little doubt in
the minds of the fans as to
the outcome of Sunday's game as
Saturday is Grey Cup time again and after a very
successful prediction concerning the 1970 World Series
we will take a stab at deciding who will come away with
Lord Grey's battered old cup come late Saturday
afternoon at CNE Stadium in Toronto,
We called the Baltimore Orioles in five games in
the World Series and that was right on the ball.
Without having too many logical facts, to back us
up we will go with the Montreal Alouettes to down the
Calgary Stamp eders.
In their last two starts the Calgary club has had
terrible luck in the dying minutes of their games and it
could happen for the third consecutive time.
Whether their mishaps were caused by accident or
choice doesn't make much difference but it could
happen again,
We have a cohort in the next office who is a
dyed-in-the-wool Saskatchewan fan and we will make
her feel good by calling Miss Saskatchewan or Regina
Roughrider (if you wish) to win the Miss Grey Cup
contest.
This is probably the first time in Canadian
football history that two third place clubs in the regular
league standings are meeting for the Grey Cup.
This brings up the much discussed point again of
having a shorter season and the two clubs that finish in
first place in their respective groups meet for the Grey
Cup.
This year's situation would have been ideal had
the Hamilton Tiger Cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders
met in the Canadian final right after the last league
games.
The Grey Cup game would have been played on
November 7 and if our memory is correct at all the
weather was perfect.
The chances of a perfect football afternoon on
the last Saturday of November or the first Saturday
afternoon in December are getting pretty slim.
In most Grey Cup games in recent years, weather
has played an important factor and we are quite sure the
best team has not always been the winner.
Over the past ten years we have had Grey Cup
games that could be and have been referred to as Mud
Bowls, Fog Bowls and Snow Bowls. Take your choice as
far as the weatherman is concerned.
Go, Hawks, Go
Supporters of the Exeter Hawks of the district
OHA Junior "D" grouping now have an opportunity to
show their enthusiasm for their favorites in more ways
than one.
The Exeter Minor Hockey Association is now
selling bright yellow buttons that say, "Go, Hawks, Go"
in black lettering. They are on sale for fifty cents and
can be purchased at the ticket wicket at the arena.
Tentative plans are being made to observe Minor
Hockey Day on Saturday, January 16. It is hoped that
the day will be capped by an exhibition game between
the Exeter Hawks and the Milton junior "C" club.
Randy Parsons of last year's Hawk club is a
valued member of the Milton team and will be back to
do battle with his former team-mates.
While talking about this year's edition of the
Hawks, we are pleased to report that approval has come
through from the OHA for two boys to continue
playing with the Exeter team.
Permission was received from the OHA Saturday
morning to allow Mike Hoy to continue with the
Hawks.
With the changing of the name of the
Zurich-Hensall Co-Ops a couple of weeks ago to the
Hensall Co-Ops, the playing certificate of Hoy, who is a
Hensall resident was held up.
After the provincial body was informed that Hoy
had played one year of bantam, two years of midget and
was starting in his fourth year of junior hockey in
Exeter, they agreed to allow him to play here.
Earlier in the month, Tom Anderson who now
lives in Exeter but was a member of the Lucan Irish last
year received his clearance from the OHA. At the same
time, Brian Campbell who started with the Hawks, Fred
Elder and Brad Pryde were declared the property of the
Hensall team.
The high flying
Lucan-Ilderton Jets were slowed
down a bit in Elmira Sunday
afternoon when they were held
to a 1-1 tie by the Elmira Polar
Kings.
At the Huron Park arena,
Friday night, the Jets trounced
the same Polar Kings by a score
of 94,
Action is scarce for the Jets in
the next couple of weeks as they
see action on only two
occasions, They travel to Fergus
Friday night to take on the
Thistles and return to the Huron
Park arena, the following Friday
to do battle with the
Cheltenham Harvesters.
Dominate play
In Elmira, Sunday afternoon,
the Jets carried a good
percentage of the play but could
only manage to get one shot past
Dan Burkhart in the Kings' goal.
Burkhart has been seen in
action in this area before as he
was the star goalie of the Preston
junior club a few years ago when
they played in the same "C"
grouping as the Exeter Hawks.
Since his junior days, Burkhart
has been performing with a
senior club in Sault Ste. Marie.
The only Jet performer able
to get the puck past Burkhart
was Dick Doughty on a power
play at 3.43 of the second
period. Helping to set up the
play were Bill White and
defenceman Don Urbshott.
Rich Mader fired the only
Elmira goal of the afternoon
Midway through the first period.
Don Stewart and Wayne
Parkinson shared the
Lucan-Ilderton goal tending
chores.
The Jets held a wide margin
of territorial play and outshot
the Kings by 37-17 in the game
that included a ten minute
overtime session.
Win convincingly
Friday night on hothe ice, the
Jets with probably their best
performance of the year posted
a convincing 9-1 win over the
Polar Kings.
The visitors from Elmira
struck early scoring at the .16
second mark of the first period
when Jorn Hansen popped the
puck past Wayne Parkinson in
the Jet net.
It took the Jets until the eight
minute mark to get started and
then they notched two goals in
less than a minute.
Doug Galloway fired the tying
goal on a three-way effort with
Ron Cauduro and playirlg coach
Jack Nairn.
Seconds later, Walt Parkinson
found the scoring range with
Steve Proctor and Jamie Robb
providing the help.
At 14.35 Jack Nairn
completed a three-way passing
play with his line-mates Steve
Storey and Doug Galloway and
eighth Exeter counter on an
unassisted effort in the first
minute of the final session and
Larry Laye completed the game
scoring with Mike Hoy assisting.
The Hawks also led the
penalty parade picking up 17
misdemeanors while the
opposition was called on 13
occasions. The infractions were
all of the minor variety except
fighting majors in the second
period to Joe O'Rourke of the
Hawks and John Kendall of
Lambeth.
Another good start
Friday night against the
Hensall Co-Ops, the Exeter
youngsters also started out in
high gear with a five goal
outburst in the first period.
Peter Kleinstiver and Ron
Janke were the scoring stars for
the Hawks, each picking up a hat
trick for their night's work,
Steve Murley started the
Exeter scoring by beating Glenn
Gascho in the Hensall nets at
2.20 of the opening period and
less than a minute later Peter
Kleinstiver scored what actually
proved to be the winning goal on
a play started by Brian Bestard.
Brian Campbell, who started
the season for Exeter scored the
only Hensall goal of the game at
6.32.
Before the period was over,
Ron Janke found the range with
two successful shots and Peter
Glover notched a single counter.
Larry Laye picked up two first
period assists while Tom
Anderson and Bob Rowe also
helped.
In the middle stanza, the
Hawks upped their game goal
total to eight with goals going to
Ron Lindenfield, Glover and
Janke, Larry Haugh assisted on
two of the scores and Janke
helped on Glover's goal.
The third period saw
Kleinstiver score twice to
complete his hat trick
performance. One was an ,
unassisted effort and the other
play was originated by Tom
Anderson.
Dennis Ferguson was in goal
for the Hawks and turned in a
steady effort. A crowd of 476
was in attendance.
Two Hawks suffered injuries,
Bob Parsons received a severe
gash in his ear when hit by a
stick at the end of the game and
Bob Rowe was hit by a flying
puck while resting in the penalty
box causing a seven-stitch gash
in his face.

A real treat
By ALVIN WILLERT
For the few fans who where
on hand Saturday morning the
first Novice game was a real
treat. In a very hard fought game
with end to end rushes, Boston
and the Road Runners ended in
a five-all tie.
Darrell Preszcator, a stalwart
on defence for Boston scored
the "hat trick" with single goals
by Dave Robinson and Paul Van
Gerwen.

Park 6-3 and the Juveniles 15-6.
In the latest game, Monday, the
Bank Boys outscored the
Juveniles 14-4.
Dark angels
open up lead
On the strength of a five-point
performance Friday night, the
Dark Angels have taken a
commanding lead at the top of
the heap in the Exeter Legion
mixed dart league.
The Dark Angels have upped
their season point total to 35.
The Sharpshooters are well back
in second spot with 28 points
while the Doublers and Late
Niters are deadlocked for third
place with 27 points apiece.
Bill Smith heads the men in
most games Won with 15 while
Marg Wragg has 12 games to her
credit, best in the ladies section.
Last week's scores were:
Canners 5 — B & A's 0
Dark Angels 5 —Winkers
Featherflights 4 — Itchy Four 1
B & J's 3 — Noisy Ones 2
Scotties 3 - Swimmers 2

Randy Parsons of the Road
Runners also scored the "hat
trick" with big Randy Fisher
scoring the first and last goals of
the game.
The score of the second game
was quite one sided as the Black
Hawks had no trouble defeating
Vancouver 6-2. Dave Bogart led
his team to victory with four big
goals. Singles were scored by
Brad Beattie and Jim Veri. The
goal scorers for Vancouver
where David Atthill and Brian
Mercer.
There seems to be need of
some trades in Pee Wee hockey'
as both games were very one
sided. The Seals clobbered
Boston to a score of 11-1 and St.
Louis defeated Panthers 5-0.
Top scorer for the Seals was
Marty . Becker with seven goals.
This is quite a feat as Marty is
one of the goalies in our Pee Wee
All-star team but on Saturday he
tried his hand at scoring goals
instead of stopping them.
Morley Obre added two with
Perry Pooley and Bob Hoffman
getting one each. The lone goal
for Boston was scored by Brian
Clarke.
The St. Louis scoring was
taken care of by Paul Shapton
with the hat-trick and Brian
Horrell with two goals.
A second bantam team is
being formed with practice again
on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.
Bob Rowe from the Jr. Hawks
and Randy Tiernan from our
Midget team will be coaches for
this team.
