How to get into turnip
to get the most out
When shopping for a rutabaga (turnip, if you prefer) choose a
nice round, smooth-skinned one that is heavy for its size. This is a
low cost vegetable, with delicate taste and high food value.
To get the most out of a turnip, you first have to get in. There
is really a simple way to cut through the outer protective wax layer
into the goodness inside. You start by cutting off the top to make a
flat surface. The rest is easy, like:
Now that you've mastered that, the Rutabaga is at your
culinary pleasure.
Recipes may be obtained by writing to Box 429, Exeter.
Rutabaga makes a natural in-between-meals nibble for weight
watchers. One half cup of diced turnip has only 25 calories.

DINNER HAMS
When our daughters were at
home I never had a bottle of
perfume a sweater, a pair of
nylons, or even a bobby pin I
could claim as my own.
Oh, I CLAIMED them all
right, but it didn't do much
good, for I could never count on
them being there when I needed
them. The girls lived by the old
adage, "What's yours is mine.
period,"
Since they've flown the nest I
again know the luxury of finding
underwear in my drawer, my
favorite shade of lipstick on the
bathroom shelf, my expensive
c ol One lasting for months
instead of a couple of weeks,
and my jewellery in its proper
boxes . . . all available without a
frantic search through the house
just before I leave to attend
some event or other.
I admit I miss the girls, but
it's heavenly not to be missing
all my personal items.
Thus, it has caused me some
consternation, lately, to find my
hair spray, my deodorant, and
sometimes my French scent
dissappearing and turning up in
places I was certain I hadn't left
them.
This morning I was 15
minutes late for work because I
couldn't locate my hair lacquer
and I was about to set forth into
the gale with soft, unsprayed
hair, when on a hunch, I poked
my head into our 16 year old
son's room.
There it was, noticeably
lighter than when I last used it....
and there, also, was my
deodorant can, bone dry.
Instead of being angry, my
eyes misted up with thanksgiving
and unbelief. For, somehow, I
glimpsed a ray of hope from the
fact that the boy must, have had
some fleeting thought about his
appearance and smell this AM.
This is a kid who avoids soap
and water like he avoids hard
work; who feels that exposing
himself to either is repulsive,
unhealthy and against his civil
liberties.
So, though I may be grasping
at straws it's just possible if he's
starting to be concerned about
his outward appearance he may
one day show some interest in
loosening up the dirt
underneath, and I may no longer
have to pick up his dirty clothes
with the hooked end of a clothes
hanger to carry them to the
washing machine.
If you should meet him on
the street and he looks like he's
slept in his clothes— you're right,
he has. We have a Hong Kong
type shack in the back yard that
bunks three boys. Every
weekend they hole up out there
to sleep, fully dressed, and cook
some of their meals on a rusty
old stove that belches out smoke
of indigestion from all the green
wood they feed into it.
When they emerge Sunday
they are permeated with a stink
that's a cross between a half
tanned cowhide and a hunk of

burning rubber and it takes a
strong stomach, to get within,
twenty feet of them.
Our lad must have almost a
dozen shirts in gorgeous living
colors but he will only wear the
green one, which must be
forcibly yanked off him to get it
washed. I have yet to learn his
reasoning on this matter.
That's because he is also
against verbalization of any
kind. When the girls were his age
they couldn't stop talking and
insisted on telling me things
unfit for my ears which kept me
in a constant state of
upsettedness. I used to long for
them to shut up,
Their brother, however,
seems to have taken the oath of
silence and the very most I have
ever been able to get out of him
about the state of his scholastic
or any other endeavor is a
mumbled, "S'awritagess."
For the most part he prefers
to communicate through shrugs,
jerks, grimaces and the occasional
grunt.
You can imagine my startled
surprise when I dumped a cup of
sugar all over the stove the other
morning and I heard a voice
speak clearly and distinctly from
the far side of the table, "Nice
going, Mom."
I couldn't curtail my joy.

emotion, "you tamed to me .
How come you actually spoke to
me?"
Immediately he returned to
his world of shrugs and grimaces
but at least I have the memory
of his voice.
Last night I saw him walking
down the street with a long
haired girl. His mouth was going
like he would never run out of
words. If he was having a
problem telling her whatever he
was telling her it sure wasn't
obvious from my vantage point.
I wonder does the missing
hair spray and deodorant fit into
the same picture'?
