Membership down, presbytery told
Pifty.five delegates from the
United churches. of Huron Perth
Presbytery met Tuesday in
Exeter United Uhurch.
During the sessions Rev,
Donald Stuart of the Brucefield
charge expressed thanks on
behalf of his congregation-to all
within the Presbytery who had.
.shown concern and offered to help. during the previous
weekend. when fire destroyed
the church. A Motion was passed
to give the utmost consideration
and understanding to any
decision made by the
congregation at Brucefield.
Reports were heard from
Rev. Bruce Guy, Da.shwood and
J. A. Snyder, Goderich
concerning summer camping at
Bimini, east of Fullarton,. and at
Minesetung, three miles north of
Goderich.
In addition to the regular
program both camps had
provided a camping experience
for the underprivileged:
Goderich by providing a camp
for widowed and divorced
mothers with children at little or
no cost to them and Bimini by
recruiting campers from
underprivileged families and
enabling them to take part in
one of the regular cgmps.
Joe Snyder of Goderich
reported with some alarm that
over the past few years
membership rolls had shown a
steady decrease in the Huron
Perth area and that eight
churches had closed in the past
two years.
Rev. Herb Wonfor of Clinton,
in giving the report of mission
givings, stated that across the
church thci givings to missions
were up 4.4% over last year.
However, to maintain the
present mission program of the
church an increase of 8% was
needed.
The presbytery will meet
December 8 with the Stratford
Huron Presbytery of the
Presbyterian Church. Plans are
to be made to share a joint
ministry in some of the rural
areas where both Presbyterian
and United Churches are serving.
