It was not too long ago that the director of
recreation in Scarborough hit the headlines by
suggesting that organized hockey be banned for all boys
of pee wee age or younger.
This topic was the basis for the keynote address
at this year's Ontario Minor Hockey Association annual
meeting by Jack Christie who retired two years ago after
serving 28 years as the group's secretary.
We would like to pass on some of Christie's
comments on the state of minor hockey and the
pressures put on some of the younger players.
"Our objectives in my early days were the same as
yours today — to govern and promote organized hockey
for boys — to encourage boys to play Canada's National
Sport in order to keep them off the streets and out of
trouble, and -- to develop good citizens through
participation in sport.
"During the thirteen years that I was your
Secretary I sometimes asked myself the question: 'are
We really working to achieve our objectives'?
"To-day, I still ask myself that question, and I
hope you will let it be in your own minds as you
deliberate minor hockey's problems.
"In his remarks the Scarborough director was
supported by a few and castigated by many.
"The fact that the suggestion was even made
indicates there is a problem - or problems.
"I don't agree with the solution he proposed. I
don't think you do either.
"You may not even agree that there is a problem.
"I DO.
"And because I do, I would like to pass along a
few questions.
"Questions that must be answered before the
problem, or problems, can be solved.
"Here they are:
"Do we really believe that we are doing a good
work if we strive to provide sport to keep kids off the
streets?
"of course we do.
"BUT - when we participate in, or encourage the
formation of leagues for ten year olds (or younger) are
we really keeping kids off the streets who need to be
kept off?
"When we participate in, or help organize a league
for eight year olds, or sevens or sixes, are we providing
fun for kids that is more or better than they could make
for themselves on their bikes ? - or playing all the street
games you and I used to enjoy so much?
"Is it true that Juveniles and maybe Midgets are
quitting hockey because of other attractions?
"or more specifically is it:-
"(1) because they just will not get up at six a.m.
for hockey? or
"(2) because they find girls at midnight more
attractive than hockey at dawn? or is it
"(3) because they've been playing hockey since
they were seven years old, and now, suddenly, they've
had enough?
"And isn't it just possible that we might increase
our Juvenile and Midget registrations if the boys were
older when they started? and — "if we could schedule
THEIR games at a sensible hour?
"and isn't it just as true that we CAN'T do that
because we need the ice time to schedule atoms, mites
and squirts, who really don't need to be kept off the
streets — except by their parents.
"and as a result, when we use prime-time ice
hours for atoms or tykes, or mites or squirts, —
"are we using ice time that could better be used
to attract Juveniles back to the rinks rather than leave
them hanging around street corners or pot-joints?
"And finally — the basic question:-
"are we ALL really trying to achieve our
objectives?— all of us?
"These, then, are the questions I have been asking
myself.
"I pass them along in the hope that you will seek
the answers — because I know that if you do, you, as a
group the finest minor hockey organization in the
world, will come up with an answer that is
"FOR THE GOOD OF THE BOYS".
"A wide variety of solutions have been suggested.
"Abolish organized hockey for all kids under 12.
"That's pretty extreme. I might be coaxed to
support the idea if it said 'under 10' but I doubt that it
would get much popular support.
"A less radical suggestion has been to abolish
league standings in house leagues. This would eliminate
coach's championship ambitions and the parental
pressures so much complained about.
"Still another is the proposal to ban scoring
records and awards in the lower age categories. This has
some merit, but would not solve our problems..
"Somewhere there is an answer — an answer that
will enable us to decrease the emphasis on the NEED
TO WIN; will
"help us to lessen the pressures on the youngsters
we claim to be working for; and maybe will
"help us to stop wasting time on six year olds
when it could more profitably be used to lure back to
our rinks the age groups we need to revive - the
Juveniles, and to some degree, the Midgets.

High scoring
for novices
The Exeter novice hockey
club showed plenty of power in
chalking up, a pair of convincing
wins, by identical scores over the
weekend.
In regular Shamrock league
play in Lucan Saturday
afternoon, the local youngsters

Sunday afternoon on home
ice they took on Hanover in an

Against Strathroy Steve Wells
in the Exeter nets picked up the

failed to get a shot on goal.
On the offensive side of the
ledger Paul Pooley was the star
for the Exeter club. Paul scored
three goals in each of the games
to head the scoring attack.
In the first period against
Strathroy, Dave Bogart, Randy
Parsons and Pooley were the
Exeter goal getters. Eugene
Clarke was the lone local
