FOR A41., GOOD SPORTS
By Rots Haugh
Need
help
To operate a successful sports or recreation
program in any community it takes a lot of volunteer help
and sometimes this is hard to find,
At the moment help is badly needed in two
departments of the Exeter recreational system. Ruth.
Durand who is director of the minor bowling program
needs scorekeepers and several coaches are needed tor the
minor hockey house league,.
Anyone with scoring knowledge in the game of
five-pin bowling and a couple of hours of free time,
Monday, Tuesday or Friday afternoons after school
would be made very welcome.
Minor bowling goes from four until six o'clock each
of these afternoons, Any volunteers may call Mrs. Durand
at 235-0714 or the Bowling Lanes at 235-2781.
The vacancies for coaching are for the pee wee and
bantam house league teams. The bantams play from one
o'clock until three o'clock each Saturday afternoon with
the pee wees following for the next two hours.
Expert knowledge of hockey is not necessary for
these positions. The main requisite besides the time
required would be enthusiasm.
A goodly number of coaches are now spending
several hours at the arena each Saturday helping the more
than 200 boys registered in the minor hockey program.
We would hope a few more men would offer their services
to fill this need, A telephone call to Rec director Alvin
Willert at the arena will do the trick.
A good deed
At Monday's meeting of RAP, the local board that
administers all activities of recreation, arena and parks in
Exeter, motion was passed allowing members of the
Exeter Minor Hockey Association to gain free admission
to the Exeter Hawks junior games this winter.
We feel this is a good move. Most members that will
benefit from this move are now coaches or managers of
the all-star minor teams that participate in Shamrock
play.
These men along with their wives spend a lot of
time and money in driving the boys to games in sometimes
distant centres. This includes the Christmas and Easter
holiday tournaments that most of the local clubs
participate in.
This is only a small reward for their faithful
services. Some will not be able to take in all of the home
games of the Hawks as the various schedules do conflict
occasionally.
It's quite a common sight at the arena, to have
various coaches and managers rushing in and out of the
arena to or from a minor game while the Hawks are in
action.
The courtesy pass for the junior games will
eliminate the question of how long these people are going
to stay at a game and should make things simpler for
everyone including the ticket takers.
We know that most of these persons concerned do
not mind paying to see the junior games but there's no
reason why they shouldn't be given a small token for their
services.
The dedication of the minor executive and coaches
over the last few years is certainly showing in the
performance of the Hawks this year.
Taking a quick look at a recent score sheet we find
everyone of the players started in the minor hockey
program here at least in the category of pee wee, if not
before.
Complain about Irish
We received a letter early this week from an
apparent avid junior hockey fan from the Lucan area
complaining' bitterly of the performance of the Lucan
Irish Six of the Western Junior "D" league.
Due to the fact the letter was unsigned we are
unable to print it in full. If the person in question wishes
to have the letter used in its entirety all that is necessary is
to furnish us with a nom de plume and his name which will
be given out only to those people that request it.
We will divulge some of the leading questions in the
letter.
First of all what is wrong with the Lucan Irish? Our
writer says all fans in the Lucan area are asking this
question. He then goes on to ask if it is the people running
the team or the players themselves.
The query is also put out as to why one of the
leading scorers in the league is not being played the way he
should?
Team management is accused of breaking up good
lines and continually mixing them up, causing confusion
among the players and fans alike.

The Lucan- Ilderton Jets,

On Huron Park ice, Friday

Start slow! y
Against Cheltenham Sunday
afternoon the Jets started slowly
as the home team scored the first
goal of the game. Before the first
period was over the L-I club had
blinked the goal light three times
and were well on the way to
victory.
Ron Cauduro tied the game at
a goal apiece when he had three
whacks at a rebound before he
was able to put the puck in the
net.
Dick Doughty took over near
the end of the period and scored
twice. Ken Loft drew assists on
both plays while Fred Piett and
Bill Dunnell picked up one assist
apiece.
Early in the second period,
from a face-off in the Harvester
end of the rink, Jack Nairn got
the draw and flipped the puck
over to Doug Galloway who
scored quickly.
Later on, Walt Parkinson
tipped in a shot from Steve
Proctor. Defenceman Larry
Willert started the play.
Third period goals were scored
by Nairn, Loft, Willert and Jamie
Robb.

Stewart shared the goal tending

was actually the top point getter
with three assists to go with a
single goal fired late in the first
period.
Brian Plaskett, a Lucan native
opened the scoring for the
Falcons with a goal at 1,14 of the
first. Near the end of the period
Steve Storey tied the score and
Nairn put his club ahead with less
than two minutes to go.
Fanshawe tied the score for a
brief time in the second when

Clean contest
Only seven penalties were
called with four going to the Jets
in Friday night's win over the
UWO Mustangs.
Steve Storey was in a scoring
mood most of the night and
picked up a hat trick to lead the
Jets to the 10-4 win.
The first period ended 2.1 for
the Jets with goals being fired by
Steve Proctor and Dick Doughty
while Brian Chinnick, a former
London Junior "A" performer
replied for the Mustangs.
Jacques Cousineau, Jamie
Robb, Bill Dunnell and Storey

Chinnick were scoring for

trick performance and captain
Doug Galloway notched a
singleton. Finalizing the Mustang
scoring was Bob Best.
Dark angels
move ahead
Taking advantage of a
five-point night in regular Exeter
Legion mixed dart league play
Friday night, the Dark Angels
moved all out in front in first
place.
The Dark Angels have a season
point total of 28, six more than
the runner-up Sharpshooters. The
Dart Sharks are another point
back in third spot.
Gerry Edington leads the male
darters with 11 games won while
Bill Smith and Keith Brintnell
have each won 10 times. The
ladies lead is shared by Jean Estey
and Marg Wragg with nine games
apiece.
Last week's scores were:
Dark Angels 5 — Noisy Ones 0
B J's 4 — Winkers 1
Itchy Four 3— Doublers 2
Shiphunters 3 -- D & S's 2
Dart Sharks 3-- B & A's 2
Scotties 3 — Canners 2
Late Niters 3— Featherflights 2
when Ray Lobb broke through
the Goderich line and blocked an
attempted punt close to the goal
line and the ball bounced into the
end zone where Allan Knight
recovered for the first South
Huron touchdown of the
afternoon.
Perry Stover tossed a
successful pass to Pius Dietrich
for the two-point conversion to
put South Huron in front 8.6 at
half-time.
Early in the third period,
quarterback Perry Stover started
to sweep around the end and
tossed a pass to wingback Gerard
Charrette who galloped 50 years
for the major score which was not
converted.
Late in the quarter, the
Panthers moved the ball deep into
Goderich territory and Pete
Kleinstiver kicked a single point
to make the point difference
more than a converted
touchdown.
Well on in the fourth quarter
Dave Cyr made a hard tackle on
the Goderich quarterback and the
ball squirted loose to be picked
up by Gerald Weido on the
one-yard line.
Stover took the ball into
paydirt on a quarterback sneak
on the next play.
Coach Ellison said it was the
toughest game his club had
encountered in two years. He
praised his club for a good solid
effort both ways. The blocked
kick by Ray Lobb and
interceptions by Gord Ward and
Gord Pryde were instrumental in
the win.
Peter Kleinstiver kept the
Goderich club in their own end
with his consistently long
kick-offs and punts.
Wayne Regier was the big
ground gainer for the Panthers
picking up a total of 73 yards in
11 carries. Dave Cyr was close
behind with 62 yards in an even
dozen attempts and Perry Stover
picked up 20 yards in six tries.
Goderich coach Ray Donnelly
said after the game "the South
Huron boys outhustled us and
that was it. They never.gave up
after being down early in the
game."
SENIORS LOSE
The South Huron senior
football failed to make the
Huron-Perth Conference finals as
they dropped a close 14-9
decision to the Wingham
Mustangs in Wingham Friday
afternoon in a sudden-death final
playoff game.
Wingham plays the Goderich
Vikings in Goderich this
afternoon, Thursday for the
league championship.
According to coach Ron
Bogart the Panthers put on their
best offensive display of the
season.
While the Panthers led 3-0 at
the end of the first half they had
the momentum taken out of their
game on the last play of the
second quarter.
From the Wingham 48 yard
line and time running out Al
MacLean started a running play
to the left but handed off to Ron
Janke who ran around right end
and went all the way for a
touchdown without being
touched by a member of the
opposing team.
While the South Huron club
thought they had another big six
points, one of the officials called
clipping on Brian Miller who
pulled out of his guard position to
lead the blocking on the counter
play.
Ron Janke kicked successive
single points on a distance of 47
yards each and Larry Bourne
gained another point on a wide
field goal attempt from 11 yards
out to account for the first half
South Huron scoring. •
Wingham came bouncing back
with a touchdown culminating a
march of 75 yards in 11 plays
early in the third quarter to take a
6-3 lead.
Early in the fourth period,
South Huron took the ball on the
Wingham 45 and went in to score
on 11 plays with Al MacLean
carrying over from three yards
out to go in front by a score of
9-6.
Wingham scored what proved
to be the winning touchdown
with less than a minute to go in
the game and added a two-point
conversion on a pass play.
The Panthers gained a total of
203 yards along the ground. Ron
Janke and Don Truemner were
the big ground gainers with 68
and 58 yards, respectively.
