Hawks get away quickly,
down'ainton in opener
key interception completed the

The Panthers rushed for a total
of 217 yards with Ron Janke and
Brian Bestard being the big
gainers with 66 and 64 yards,
respectively.
An outstanding performance
by both the offensive and
defensive squads allowed the
South Huron senior Panthers to
blank Stratford Northwestern
31-0 in Stratford, Wednesday
afternoon.
The defensive unit held the
Stratford club on their own side
of centre field for the entire
afternoon and kept the net gain
to only 39 yards.
Coach Ron Bogart said after
the game, "The hitting and
tackling was the best we have had
to date."
The coach continued "our
running game was terrific and we
didn't have to pass.
We should have had at least
two more touchdowns. Jesse
Vincent recovered a fumble for a
major score but the official
claimed the whistle had blown.

The Exeter Hawks were away
and flying in the opening game•
of the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" schedule
at the Exeter arena, Sunday
afternoon.
The Hawks carried the play
most of the afternoon in
outscoring the Clinton Colts by
a score of 5.1 before a good
crowd of 441.
Bob Rowe put the locals on
the scoreboard for the first time
at 6,47 of the first period by
scoring on a play started by
Peter Clover.
Only 30 seconds later the
score was 2-0 as Ron Janke
found an opening in the Clinton
net with Glover again providing
the assist. Janke let a hard drive
go from the left point
At 16,31 of the opening
session Peter Kleinstiver was the
successful Exeter marksman on a
three-way passing effort with
Bob Parsons and Brian
Campbell.
The second period was
scoreless with the Hawks having
manygood scoring chances that
just failed to click. In the first
two periods the visitors from
Clinton managed less than 10
shots on John Hayter in the
Exeter goal.
The Hawks closed out their
game scoring with two goals
early in the final frame, Mike
Hoy fired the first with less than
two minutes gone on the clock
and Ron Lindenfield nabbed the
final goal less than five minutes
later.

The two football clubs at
South Huron District High have
made the Huron-Perth
Conference playoffs and are
,competing this week in semi-final
rounds.
The juniors completed an
undefeated season by downing
Stratford Northwestern 6-0 in
Stratford Wednesday afternoon
while the seniors evened their
won and loss record at three
games apiece with a 31-0 win over
the same Stratford club.
The seniors finished in a third
place tie with Stratford Central
and St. Marys but with the flip of
a coin they were pitted against St.
Marys in a sudden-death game
Tuesday afternoon.
The South Huron boys gained
their fourth straight win as they
downed St. Marys 18-10 and now
travel to Wingham Friday
afternoon for a semi-final game.
The final will be played on
Thursday, November 12 against
either Goderich or Stratford
Central.
The local juniors played host
to Wingham in a semi-final game
on the South Huron school
grounds yesterday afternoon,
Wednesday. The score of this
game should be found elsewhere
in this edition, probably on page
3.
Defence strong
A terrific performance by the
defensive unit was mainly
responsible for Tuesday's South
Huron senior win over St. Marys.
The key play of the game came
in the fourth, quarter when Cam
McArthur intercepted a St. Marys
pass with South Huron leading
12-10.

The Panthers opened the
scoring in the first period when
Murray Glanville scored on a
short plunge. Early in the second
half, Gerry Zvonkin of St. Marys
put his club ahead when he
galloped 92 yards on a kickoff
return. The convert was good.
St. Marys went ahead 10-6 on
a 13-yard field goal in the second
period.
The Panthers went ahead to
stay when Ron Janke was
successful in hitting Al MacLean
on a 13-yard pass and run play on
a fake third down punt play.

Dark angels
stay ahead
The Dark Angels came Up with
a four point performance Friday
night to move four points ahead
of the pack in the Exeter Legion
mixed dart league.
The league leaders have a
season point total of 23. The
Sharpshooters are in second spot
with 19 while the Dart Sharks and
Doublers are deadlocked in third
place with 18 points apiece.
Four clubs, the Canners, Itchy
Four, Late Niters and Scotties are
on equal footing with 17 points.
Norm Ferguson has moved
well in front in the high score
department with a 180 while
Anna Romaniuk and Bernice
Shipman have identical scores of
134 to lead the ladies division.
In most games won, Bill Smith
has 10 to lead the male darters
while Marg Wragg has won nine
times to head the ladies section.,

New club
joins WOAA
The newly organized
Hensall-Zurich Combines will be
performing this year in the
Wes tern Ontario Athletic
Association Intermediate "C"
category.
With Bob Galloway, formerly
of the Crediton Tigers and Bob
Merner of Zurich handling the
combined chores of manager and
coach, the Combines will play
their home games in the Zurich
arena.
Clubs from Mitchell,
Harriston, Arthur and Elora will
be playing "C" along with the
Combines along with "B" clubs
from Wingham and Listowel.
The first exhibition start for
the Combines will be Tuesday
night at the Zurich arena when
they take on the Hensall-Zurich
Co-Ops of the. Western Junior
"D" grouping.
The following players are
expected to line up with the
Combines, Barry O'Brien, Bob
Buchanan, John Loader, Kevin
McKinnon, Bill Chipchase, Bob
Pinter, Fred Lamb, Glen
Overholt, Bill Hoffman, Jim

The seniors scored at least one
point in every quarter on the way
to their 31-0 win over Stratford.
Murray Glanville scored a
major in the first quarter on a
one-yard plunge and Ron Janke
went 15 yards for a T.D. on a
counter play in the second.
Janke booted a single point in
the third period and Doug Mock
recovered a St. Marys fumble for
a touchdown. In the fourth Don
Truemner went over from one
yard out and Cam McArthur
galloped 45 yards to scoring
territory after making an
interception.

South Huron junior win over
Stratford came in the fourth
quarter when Wayne Regier ran
five yards off tackle to score.

Legion auxiliary
host tournament
The ninth annual invitational
bowling tournament sponsored
by the Exeter Legion Ladies'
Auxiliary was held at the Exeter
Bowling Lanes, Wednesday
afternoon.
The high team and trophy
went to a team from Goderich.
Doe Quinn of the same Goderich
team came up with the high triple
of the afternoon while the
runner-up was Gerry Harris of
Clinton.
Another Goderich
competitor, Faye Sheardown
rolled the highest single with
Eileen Daubs of Strathroy next in
line.
A feature of the tourney was
the appearance of two ladies over
the age of 80 who competed in
the afternoon play. They were
Mary Taylor of Hensall and Hap
Cutting of Exeter.
