By CLARE STANLEY
Wednesday night the Lucan
Irish closed out their exhibition
schedule with a 10-6 loss to the
Norwich Merchants. In the first
period the Merchants scored four
goals, one each by John Avery,
Rick Buck, Lambert Schameser
and Kirk Hunter.
Jim Hearn and Dennis Carty
scored for the fighting Irish.
Lucan picked up only one
penalty to four for Norwich.
The second period saw Lucan
outscore the Merchants three to
two with Ken Needham, Jack
Bradley and Torn Hodgins each
scoring single goals. Lu can Irish
received only one penalty while
Norwich made four trips to the
sin bin.
Then in the third period
Norwich took over and scored
four times, two goals by Wayne
Longthorne and singles by Dale
Lee and Terry Warbous, while
Jim Macklem tallied for Lucan.
The Irish received six
penalties, one a five minute
spearing penalty which waa
assessed against Jeff Craig, A total
of eight penalties to the Irish and
nine to Norwich.
Joe Arnold although scored
and showed good form in the
Irish nets. Defence seems to be
the Irish failing and no doubt
coach Bill Neil is suffering some
sleepless nights thinking about
the 33 goals against, while the
Irish scored only 13 in three
exhibition games.

By SID DALEY
Our "EARLY BIRD"
campaign is going great guns, the
membership chairman advises
that to date 12 members have
paid their Legion dues for 1971.
Are you one of them? I know I'm
not, but I will be prior to my next
weekly comments and I will have
the "EARLY BIRD" seal to
prove it. Why not join me?
I was speaking to the "Chief
Ghoul", come to think about it,
he looked an awful lot like
Smilin' Carl, anyway he told me
to be sure and once again advise,
all witches, ghosts and what have
you, to be certain and answer the
summons of last week's
"Comments" to be present in the
Sea, Land and Air Lounge of
Branch 540, Saturday evening, to
partake of the fun and games and
prizes. The Chief Ghoul is placing
the "Newfie Curse" on all and
sundry who do not attend and to
hear the "Chief" describe it, it
sure sounded "Ghoulish".
The "kids" from the "Orange
Trash Can" sometimes known as
the "Coffee House", in any event
it is the Anglican Church Youth
Movement, Lucan whose club
rooms are in the basement of the
Parish Hall, have asked that I put
a plug in for them in this week's
column.
To obtain much needed
equipment such as a record
player, records, etc. the "kids"
are holding a "Skate-a-thon", on
Nov. 11th, at the Lucan Arena,
they have rented the ice for 21/2
hours and are asking for sponsors
to sponsor skaters at one cent a
round. When one of the skaters
asks for your sponsorship, be
generous and help the "kids" in
their project.
I am lead to believe that one of
these days, you will be able to
enjoy your favourite brew while
attending a hockey game. Branch
540 is jumping the gun a bit, and
invites you to attend the 1970,
Stanley Cup play-offs in the Sea,
Land, & Air Lounge, on Friday,
November 6 at 9 p.m., courtesy
of Denny Riggin of Molsons' and
Branch 540. Remember the date
and time — Nov. 6 , 1970 at 9:00
p.m. Sounds interesting — See
you there. Imagine being able to
enjoy the game and a bubbly at
the same time.
Dates to Remember:
Nov. 4, 1970 — Wednesday
8:30 p.m. Sharp — General
Meeting at Branch 540 — Plan to
attend and support your elected
executive.

Frank Egan, son of Mrs.
Kathl yn Egan, has been
appionted to the position of
Manager of the Bank of Montreal,
Chippewa. Frank came to Lucan
in 1945, and was educated in
Lucan Public Schools and
Medway District High School. He
started his career at the Lucan
Branch of the Bank of Montreal.

Annual Remembrance Church
Parade to St, Pat's R.C. Church.
Let's all make a special effort
to attend this important event.
Following the church parade, we
urge everyone to attend at the
wreath laying ceremony at the
Legion cenotaph situated on the
lawn in front of Branch 540.
Following the ceremony, our
good ladies of the Auxiliary will
be serving do-nuts and coffee in
the main hall. We ask our good
citizens to take a few minutes
after attending the church of
their choice to attend at the
Lucan-Clandeboye Explorers
met in the C. E. building of the
United Church. The Red Star girls
had a perfect attendance of 14.
Fifteen Blue Star and 11 Gold
Star attended.
Assistant Chief Explorer, Jean
Barker led in Explorer's Purpose.
Halloween fun-songs were then
enjoyed.
All groups adjourned to the
worship room where the theme,
"To Care is to Share", was taken
by Janice Kestle, Joanne Hodgins
and Ruth Ann Atkinson. A
recording of the Lord's Prayer by
Brazilian children was played.
Members divided into groups
to make posters, some telling of
UNICEF, to go to the schools and
others to alert the townspeople of
the Explorer's collection for this
organization, Friday.
On the same day the girls will
meet at the Lucan United Church
for a Halloween costume potluck
supper. Posters will be made for
the Bible Society's canvass by the
churches.
Bride-elect
is showered
October 8, Mrs. R. R. Crozier
and daughter Susan, held a pantry
shower for Adele Simpson, eldest
daughter of Rev. Alec J. and Mrs.
Simpson of Ailsa Craig.
Mother of the bride-elect, Mrs.
Simpson, poured at the tea table
and Adele cut the cake. Many
beautiful gifts were received by
the bride-to-be.
Lunch was served by Mrs.
David Compton and Susan
Crozier.
cenotaph with us. After all, it will
only cost you a few minutes of
your time — it cost them their
life.
Nov. 11, 1970 — Wednesday
7:00 p.m. Remembrance
Banquet — Branch 540, Lucan. I
will have to retract my statement
in a previous "Comment" that
everybody is welcome — I have
since been advised the banquet is
"STAG", unless, of course, a
"woman" veteran wishes to
attend.
And that's 30 for this week —
Remember, What we really need
is more young people who will
carry to their jobs the same
enthusiasm for getting ahead that
they display in traffic.
The Anglican and United
Church ministers have asked the
Explorers to distribute church
calendars door-to-door.
More Gold Star scrapbooks
were brought in, on (1) postcards,
(2) flags, (3) collection of
serviettes (4) hobbies and pets
and (5) My summer activities.
Teachers talk
to Lions club
The Lucan and District Lions
Club held their regular meeting in
the basement of the Anglican
Church, with a very good
attendance.
Art Banes returned to the
Lions to be an active member
again. He had previously been a
Lion but had not rejoined in
activities since coming to Lucan.
Guest speakers at this meeting
were Fred Berdan, Lucan Public
School Principal, and K. J.
Schenkel, Principal of St.
Patrick's Separate School. Mr.
Schenkel spoke on the new
system in the Separate School
which is designed to meet the
needs of children. (Special
Education) Under this system the
children will go at their own pace.
Mr. Berdan explained the
selective school system which is
practically the same as the
Separate school. He also showed
slides on special selectives.
The regular meeting was
followed by an executive meeting
at which it was stated that the
stag party held last Friday was a
success, 400 tickets having been
sold, and Jim Freeman being such
an able chairman. The top prize
of $500 was won by G. I. Williams
of Clandeboye.
The Lions Club Baseball team
played the Business Men and won
the Championship.
Registration for House League
Hockey will be taken this
Saturday at the Arena from 10
a.m. to 12 noon. There will be
plenty of registration forms
available if required.
Present concert
for senior group
The concert given by the
Happy Hearts of London, in the
Parish Hall, last Thursday was
poorly attended owing to
conflicting interests, but the
concert party put on a good show
and those who were there had a
most enjoyable time.
The Senior Citizen's Club,
appreciated those who gave of
their time. Larry Ditty set-up a
P.A. system and Mrs. M. H.
Hodgins served refreshments.
