At Salem, Mass., in 1692, after the tiny Puritan colony had suffered one calamity after another, a terrible witch hunt, led by a preacher named Cotton Mather, resulted with 14 women bung, one pressed to death, and 150 jailed, Back then, they had ways of telling if someone was really a witch or not. One method was to stick pins into the accused and if spots were found where there was no feeling then that person was deemed a witch. Another sure-fire way was to throw the suspected sorcerer into a deep lake. If she floated, she was the real thing, but if she drowned, she was a fake! Good thing most of us didn't live back then for anyone who painted her face was also decreed a witch of high order. In 1770 British Parliament passed the following law: "That all women of whatever age, rank or profession, or degree, who shall impose upon or seduce and betray into matrimony any of His Majesty's subjects, by virtue of scents, paints, or cosmetics, artificial teeth, false hair, Spanish Wool, iron stays, bolstered hips or high-heeled shoes, shall incur the penalty of the law now in force against witchcraft". The American Puritans adhered to this law, too, and poor old Rev. Cotton Mather must stir uneasily in his grave as young and old females pass through the old burying ground on Copps Hill with their wigs, perfume and bewitching makeup. Cheer up, Reverend, they're not all witches. They can't be. A true witch can cast a fearsome curse on someone in her disfavour by brewing up a potion containing the victim's nail clippings or hair cuttings. As she stirs she chants a magic formula that will bring about such punishments that can scarcely be imagined, and certainly cannot be printed in a family newspaper. I won't say anymore except there are a few people who would be well advised not to clip their toenails or their beards in my witchly presence next Saturday night! No, really, I am. I was born on a chill, Halloween night (two or three decades ago) when a full, blood-red moon east spectral shadows over snow crested, stubbled fields. A coven of witches, flying at low speed, suddenly swooped down and dropped me in the coal chute of our secluded farm home. They left with the promise of returning and taking me back to their Satonic domain on some future Halloween night. This is the story my big brothers related to me every year, and scared me stiff by solemnly assuring me that 'most likely this WAS the year' for my return to the land of black magic. Dirty, rotten boys! I must have been ten before I found out they were liars, and that I had been delivered, just like every other kid, by a stork. Nevertheless, each Halloween birthday, I am gripped by supernatural sensations of possessing mystical powers which practically compel me to go out and cast spells, tly through the air and send up incantations of evil sorcery. My children have never had difficulty believing I'm a witch. Sometimes, in fact, they come right out and say, "You are an old witch." Albeit, these are on occasion when they and I are in hot disagreement, still, it is heartening to know they recognize my witchly attributes. Right now, witches are enjoying tremendous popularity. All sorts of people are trying to crash into the cult and jump on the broom, so to speak. Classes in witchcraft are springir g up all over the place. Of course, this is ridiculous. Either you are a witch or you aren't, and no amount of lessons can turn you into one if you haven't been endowed with the powers in the first place. Let me tell you, it was different in the old days. No one was trying to break into witch society then. Witches were considered evil and it didn't take much to convince many European church Waders, in the era of 1400 to 1/00, that hundreds of people were endoWed with `devlish powers'. During this period 300,000 accused women were put to a firey death at the stake or by other equally odious methods. Throughout history, during times of terribly low public morale, or scourging plagues, in seasons of famine, or at any other time when it looked as if things couldn't get worse, hysterical Xi Gamma Nu members and their husbands celebrated Halloween a little early with a masquerade party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Raymond this week. Behind those happy faces are Dr. and Mrs. Bill Amos, Kirk ton, and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Tuckey are the refugees from Hawaii. Mrs. Dave Cross presided over the business session. A Halloween Party has been planned at Kin President, George Pratt's home. The draw brought by the hostess was won by Mrs. Drysdale. She was presented with a floral arrangement from the club. A gift was presented to Mrs. Bob Coleman who is moving to Hamilton. A surprise baby shower was held for Mrs. Gernot Dauber and lunch was served by Mrs. Spencer. awarding of the bursaries was the number one concern of Auxiliaries, which are given to university students according to need and not according to merit. The Zone Commander commended the local members for their contributions made to the Bursary Fund and to the many local projects they support. The Exeter branch topped the list in raising funds in Zone C, No. 1, In honor of the 19th birthday of the Exeter Auxiliary the evening commenced with a pot luck supper, and birthday cake was served At the end of the meeting. Two new members, Mrs. Barbara I-learn and Mrs. Gloria Vincent were initiated, Ten year membership pins were awarded to Mrs. Rena Young, Mrs. Terry Heywood, Mrs. Marg Edwards and Mrs. Norma Brintnell. Zone darts will be held, November 4, at Blyth, and Zone cards will be played at Kincardine, November 18. ,An inexpensive facial: Step 1. In a small bowl, mix two parts salt to one part olive oil. Step 2, Gently massage your face and throat with upward strokes. Step 3. Leave for about five minutes and remove with soap and water. Step 4. Follow with a cold water rinse. Result: the skin is smooth from the oil and the salt has cleansed the pores. Also any dead skin will vanish and it is tremendous for "peeling" suntan.
