FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Getting in
condition
Most of the teams in the Western OHA junior "I)"
hockey grouping are getting in plenty of pre-season
practices and exhibition games in readiness for the
opening of the season.
As a result of the first few pre-season tilts, the
Clinton juniors appear to be fairly strong. They dumped
the Mitchell Hawks by a score of 16-3 while the Lucan
Irish were edging the same Mitchell club by a close 7-5
score.
The Exeter Hawks broke even in their first two
outings, downing Lambeth 5-3 and losing to Milverton, a
"C" club by a 7-4 score.
Hockey fans in this area are in for an early season
treat Friday night when the Norwich Merchants will be in
town to take on the Hawks in exhibition play.
This will be a replay of last spring's exciting playoff
series between the two good junior clubs.
We understand that Norwich has lost quite a few of
last year's regulars due to overage. Also, captain Wayne
Chalkley is now with the Brantford Majors, the same club
that former Hawk captain Barry Baynham is performing
for.
Baseball for the year 1970 has come to a close with
the completion of the World Series. The annual fall classic
was a very short one with the Baltimore Orioles wasting
little time in disposing of Cincinatti in five games.
After our prediction of two weeks ago that the
Orioles would win in five we are sure our good editor was
flabbergasted when the outcome was decided so quickly
and so accurately.
A wise move
In a recent communique from the Ontario Hockey
Association officials of all hockey teams have been told of
a change in regulations.
Starting this year, the referee and linesman fees are
to be paid at the end of the second period in the referees'
room.
As far as we are concerned this is a good move. We
have been in the office at the Exeter arena on many
occasions when the referees would come in after the game
to pick up their money and would be subjected to
criticism from many sources.
To attend clinic
A hockey coaches' clinic to be held in Kitchener
Saturday will be attended by five coaches of minor clubs
in the Exeter Minor Hockey Association.
Attending from Exeter will be Tony Mattucci, Ron
Horn, Lloyd Moore, Larry Willert and Mike Cushman.
Among the instructors at the all-day event will be
Bill Maloney, hockey coach at McMaster University in
Hamilton, Roger Neilsen of the Peterboro Petes, Gerry
Forler, head coach of the Kitchener Rangers and Ian
Young former Oshawa junior goal tender.
Terrific support
' We would like to pass on our congratulations to the
Grand Bend Recreation Association and everyone that
participated in Saturday's walkathon from Grand Bend to
Greenway and return.
More than $4,500 was realized from the walk. All
of this money will be used to sponsor minor sporting
activities in Grand Bend. This not only includes a very
active minor hockey program, but a figure skating club
giving girls a chance to participate and all sports
throughout the year.
Special mention should go to Paul Couse and Bob
Jennison who were responsible for a good portion of the
monies raised. These two men needed a lot of energy and
intestinal fortitude to survive the 16-mile trip on a
wheelbarrow. Couse did the pushing while Jennison
curled up in the barrow.
Ivan Luther made part of the trip wearing a large
pair of Gulf shoes that measured more than 21 inches in
length. All told, some 50 Grand Bend residents, mostly
youngsters took part in the walkathon or barrowthon.

Ontario.
Is there any place you'd rather be?
Ontarians are the kind of people who wouldn't be
here if there was any place better. We are people
who came from a hundred lands and stayed to build.
People with backbone and brawn and a hunger to
succeed. Men and women who've created a standard
of living in decades that other lands worked cen-
turies to build. If we have a flaw it's our chronic
modesty. Ontarians may be proud to be Ontarians
and Canadians . . . they just seldom tell anyone.
From an economic point of view that's wrong.
The more people we have boosting Ontario and
Canada the better it is. And we've got a lot to
boost with. In the fight against pollution for exam-
ple, Ontario has become a world leader. Everyone
talks about pollution, we do something. More than
a billion dollars has been invested to date to build
water supply and sewage systems in dozens of com-
munities throughout the province. We've got laws
to prosecute industries that pollute the air and
water; loans and grants to help industries that
want to do something to stop it. We need a vigor-
ous economy of course, to support these important
programs. And, that's where you come in. Though
our productivity has doubled in ten years and our
incomes in twelve, Ontarians don't it on their
successes. There's a demanding decade ahead full
of challenges and opportunities to make the quality
of our lives better yet. To meet these challenges
we've got to believe in ourselves. Which, when you
think about it, isn't such a bad idea.
Everytime you I. cost Ontario . . . Ontario and Canada get a little stronger.
Government of Ontario 0 John Robartso Prime Minister.

The two South Huron District
High School football clubs put
together their best scoring power
of the season Thursday afternoon
as they amassed a total of 100
points in a Huron-Perth
Conference doubleheader.
In the first half of the twin bill
played at the local school
grounds, the South Huron juniors
blanked Central Huron of Clinton
55-0 for their fourth straight win
of the season.
The second game, produced
the first win of the year for Ron
Bogart's senior Panthers as they
walloped Seaforth District High
School by a score of 45-6.
The local teams were in
Stratford yesterday, Wednesday,
meeting Stratford Central in a
regular league play doubleheader.
Fumble early
After giving the ball to
Seaforth by fumbling on two
occasions early in the first
quarter, the senior Panthers
started their first scoring spurt
midway through the period.
Taking over on their own 47,
the Panthers hit pay dirt in five
plays with Don Truemner
carrying the ball over from one
yard out. Ron Janke booted the
convert and the home team was
out in front 7-0.
On the second play of the
second quarter Brian Campbell
intercepted a Seaforth pass on his
own 41 and brought it back to the
Seaforth 54.
Don Truemner picked up 20
yards in three consecutive carries,
Dark Angels
lead darters
The three top teams in the
Exeter Legion mixed dart league
were only able to come up with
two points each in Friday's
regular play leaving the standings
unchanged.
The Dark Angels continue in
first place with a total of 16
points while the Sharpshooters
and Scotties are deadlocked with
14 points apiece. Fourth spot is
shared by the Dart Sharks and
Doublers who each came up
with four point performances to
raise their season total to 13.
Ann Romaniuk holds a high
score of 134 in the ladies'
section while Duff Rothbauer,
Neil Fergus and Gerry Edington
have a score of 140 each to lead
the male darters.
Friday's scores were as
follows:
Itchy Four 5 — Shiphunters 0
Noisy Ones 4 — D & S's 1
Doublers 4 — Featherflights 1
Dart Sharks 4 — Canners 1
Swimmers 3 — B & A's 2
Winkers 3 — Sharpshooters 2
B & J's 3 — Scotties 2
Late Niters 3 — Dark Angels 2
Ron Janke gained an additional
12 yards and on a second down
play Al MacLean raced the
remaining 22 yards for a major
score which was again converted
by Janke.
Seaforth scored an
unconverted touchdown on an 85
yard pass and run play late in the
first half.
The first time the South
Huron boys got their hands on
the ball in the third quarter, Ron
Janke raced 56 yards for his
club's third touchdown of the
afternoon. He again kicked the
extra point to give South Huron a
21-6 margin on the scoreboard.
On the last play of the third
period, Don Truemner carried
over the goal line from five yards
out for his second major of the
afternoon. For the first time in
the game, a South Huron convert
attempt failed.
The kickoff to open the final
period was fumbled by Seaforth
and Dale MacKenzie made the
recovery on the Seaforth 35 yard
line. In six plays the Panthers
carried into scoring territory with
Ron Janke getting his second
touchdown on a two yard plunge.
Janke's score was set up when
Murray Glanville gained eight
yards on a third down play with
only inches to go.
During the next series of plays,
Seaforth failed with three
successive passes and the Panthers
took over near midfield. Don
Truemner went 41 yards, Al
MacLean galloped an additional
10 and Brian Campbell scooted
the remaining two yards.
Late in the final period, Doug
Mock intercepted a Seaforth pass
attempt to start the last South
Huron march down the field from
the opposing 44 yard line.
Brian Bestard started the
march with an eight yard run and
went into the end zone for the
score on a five yard. gallop.
The Panthers amassed their
greatest ground game of the
season coming up with a rushing
total of 395 yards. Ron Janke was
the big gainer with 134 yards in
12 carries. Don Truemner went

Early scoring
The junior Panthers wasted
little time in giving the fans an
idea of the outcome of the game.
They jumped into a 21-0 lead at
the end of the first quarter and
were never seriously threatened.
Wayne Regier scored the first
touchdown on a three yard dive
play and more points went up on
the scoreboard when Perry Stover
passed to Gerard Charrette for a
two-point conversion.
Stover went 33 yards for the
next major score on a 33 yard
off-tackle run. The third
touchdown of the opening
quarter came when Dave Cyr
dived over the line from five yards
out. The last two convert
attempts, both through the air
failed. Peter Kleinstiver closed
out the first period scoring with a
single point on a booming 75 yard
kick.
Scoring started quickly in the
second session when Gord Ward
took the Clinton kickoff on his
own . 45 yard line and wasn't
stopped until he crossed the goal
line successfully.
Near the end of the first half,
Wayne Regier went 16 yards off
tackle to chalk up the fifth South
Huron touchdown. Perry Stover
carried the ball over for another

Stover tossed to Gerard
