FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
Minors • sign up
Registration for the 1970-71 season of the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association took place at the Exeter
arena Saturday morning with a good turnout of boys
wishing to play in the house league and all-star team
activities.
Those boys who missed the opening registering day
are reminded that they can still sign up by appearing at
the arena this Saturday morning.
The success of the local minor hockey system can
be gauged by the continuous good showings by our
teams in the Shamrock league and in Ontario Minor
Hockey Association playdowns.
In addition to this at least one or two players
from the local program move up to higher company
each year. Barry Baynham and Randy Parsons of last
year's junior Hawks are doing exceptionally well in a
higher class of hockey. Baynham, who was the captain
of the 1969-70 Hawks is a regular defenceman with the
Brantford Majors of the Western Ontario Junior "A"
league.
We had the opportunity to watch Barry play
Friday night against the Detroit junior Red Wings and
were pleased with his performance.
He appeared to be one of the top Brantford
performers, being used on power plays and when his
club was a man short in addition to his regular turn.
Another member of the Brantford club is no
stranger to these parts. He is Steve English who played
all his minor hockey to date with Lucan teams.
Steve is also a regular defenceman and on several
occasions when shifts got mixed up a bit paired up with
Baynham on the blueline. The Lucan youngster scored
the first goal of the game with a good hard shot from
the left point.
After a 4-2 loss to Detroit one of the Brantford
officials told us there probably would be some
shake-ups in their line-up but he indicated they were
happy with the performances of Baynham and English.
Playing on the Detroit team were Mark and Marty
Howe, sons of the famous No. 9 of the Detroit Red
Wings Gordie Howe. The first time we saw the two
Howe boys play hockey was in Clinton about eight or
nine years ago when they took part in a mite
tournament at the Canadian Forces Base.
While they did not appear to be outstanding
hockey players they turned in steady performances with
good positional play and made a good solo rush or two.
The oldest of the two, Mark is a big boy and
when he skates one can certainly see a resemblance to
the Red Wing star.
Gordie still carries on with the Detroit Red Wings
and it certainly isn't an impossibility for the near future
to have a father and son combination in the NHL.
The senior Howe started off on the right foot
Saturday night by scoring his 764th goal for the Red
Wings in their 5-3 win over Oakland. It's his 25th seasonin
the NHL.
Getting back to the other Exeter youngster that
has moved up this year. Randy Parsons is with the
Milton Junior "B" club and in a recent exhibition game
scored a pair of goals.
The junior Hawks have started workouts for the
coming season. We dropped into the practice session at
the Huron Park arena Sunday afternoon and there was
plenty of enthusiasm shown by the goodly number of
prospects.
After some doubt of recent weeks, it appears that
coach Bob White will be back at the helm of the club
and this is certainly good news. White who played some
senior and intermediate hockey back in the 1950's with
Exeter teams did an excellent job with the youngsters
last year.
MINORS SIGN UP — Registration for the Exeter Minor Hockey Association took place at the arena,
Saturday morning. Any boys failing to sign up at that time have another chance this Saturday morning.
Signing in with president Harvey Pfaff and secretary Bev Skinner are Jim Webb and Jeff Davis.

Schedule practice
for new H-Z club
One of the entries in this
year's Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" grouping
will be a combined team from
Zurich and Hensall.
The club will be known as the
Hensall-Zurich Co-Ops and will
be built around a nucleus of
players from last year's Zurich
Flyers along with some juveniles
from Zurich and four or five
good midget prospects from
Hensall.
The team is sponsored by the
Minor hockey associations of the
two villages and is goverened by
a newly formed committee.
Doug O'Brien is president of
the governing committee. Greg
Willert will handle the
managerial duties while Dick
Bedard with many years of
hockey experience will be the
coach.
The first practice of the
season will be held at the Huron
Park arena tomorrow afternoon,
Friday at 5.30 p.m. Any players
in the Hensall and Zurich areas
wishing to try out will be more

The football clubs at South
Huron District High School
continued their season pattern in
their latest doubleheader against
teams from Goderich,
Wednesday afternoon.
The junior squad directed by
coaches Doug Ellison and Jack
Riddell came up with their third
consecutive win again by a very
impressive score. They swamped
Goderich 38-6.
At the senior level it was a
different story with Goderich
administering a 34-0 defeat on
Ron Bogart's South Huron
youngsters. It was the third
straight defeat for the local
seniors. The other two losses
were close one-point decisions.
The two South Huron clubs
are back in action this afternoon
Thursday in doubleheader play
at the high school grounds in
Exeter with Clinton and
Seaforth teams supplying the
opposition.
The South Huron juniors
confined their scoring in the
38-6 win over Goderich to the
first three quarters.
The team's top ground gainer
Dave Cyr scored two
touchdowns, both in the first
quarter and both on long runs.
The first was on a 92-yard
offtackle gallop and the second
was on a similar drive through
the Goderich line that went for
50 yards.
The convert attempt on the
first major score failed but the
second made up for it when
quarterback Perry Stover passed
to Pius Dietrich for a
two-pointer.
The only scoring in the
second session was an
unconverted touchdown by the
Goderich club.
In the third period, the South
Huron youngsters broke the
game wide open with three
unanswered touchdowns. On
each occasion, two point
conversions were successful.
Gerard Charrette took care of
most of the scoring
singlehandedly. He took a pass
from Stover for 14 yards into
paydirt and only minutes later
gained nine yards and a
lineman honors going to Joe
Kenda.
Honorable mentions in the
backfield went to Perry Stover
and Dave Cyr with runner-up
lineman awards going to Ron
Clarke, Peter Kleinstiver and
Gary Gibson.
The South Huron offensive
attack in the senior contest was
close to nil. Official records
show total yardage gained of
119 yards, but 95 of these were
picked up by way of penalties.
The local backs carried the
ball 27 times and lost one yard.
SH quarterbacks threw four
passes good for only 25 yards.
Larry Bourne and O'Rourke
each grabbed off two passes.
The winning Goderich club
gained 394 yards throughout the
afternoon. Their ground attack
picked up 192 yards, passing was
good for 167 yards and they
picked up 35 yards on South
Huron penalties.
touchdown on a similar pass
play pattern.
On both conversions it was a
Stover to Charrette pass that
gained the double points.
Late in the third period,
Wayne Regier completed the
South Huron scoring with a six
yard gain on a dive play. This
time it was Pius Dietrich that
grabbed Stover's pass for the
two extra points.
The South Huron total
rushing attack picked up 366
yards as compared to 255 by
Goderich. Cyr continued his
amazing rushing record with 173
yards on only eight carries for an
average of close to 22 yards per
carry.
In the passing department,
Gerard Charrette picked off four
passes good for 67 yards.
In the usual vote of the
players after the game, Gerard
Charrette was named the best
backfielder of the day with

In their first exhibition start
of the season at the London
Gardens Saturday night, the
Lucan Irish juniors were edged
6-5 by the London Gems.
The London club plays in the
OHA Intercounty Junior "C"
ranks while the Irish perform in
the Western Junior "D"
grouping.
The Irish six and the Hawks
of Mitchell met in another
pre-season game at the Lucan
arena last night, Wednesday. The
third start of the year for the
Lucanuniors will be Friday
night at
j
the Huron Park arena
when they take on the
Lucan-Ilderton Jets. Game time
is 8:30.
In the game against the
London Gems, the Irish club
suffered from a rash of penalties
as the result of chippy play
drawing 80 of 129 minutes in
penalties called.
Ken Needham with a two
goal effort led the Lucan scoring
attack with single goals being
fired by Jeff Craig, Jack Bradley
and Dave Revington.
front 5-1.
The Greys jumped into a
commanding lead in the third
when they scored three times.
Ann Jorgensen tripled to open
the inning, Glenda Fisher
followed with a single and Pam
Vanderweil slammed her second
extra base hit, this time a home
run to clear the bases.
Neustadt came bouncing back
with' a seven run splurge in the
bottom of the third to tie the
score at 8-8. The Greys counted
twice in the fourth with Lynne
Farquhar's triple and singles
delivered by Joan Campbell and
Sheila Willert producing the
runs.
The home team scored five
times in the bottom of the
fourth and were never headed.
Singles by Parsons, Farquhar
and Campbell produced the fifth
inning marker while Kathy Wells
walked and scored in the
seventh.
The Exeter Greys completed
a lengthy season in Western
Ontario Athletic Association
ladies softball play Thursday
night in Neustadt as they
dropped a 20-12 decision to the
home club and were eliminated
from further play.
The Neustadt club took the
best-of-five series in straight
games and the WOAA "B"
championship.
The Greys started off as if
they were going to get back into
contention in the series by
scoring four big runs in the first
inning.
Walks to Joan Campbell and
Glenda Fisher, singles from the
bats of Sheila Willert and Jayne
Broderick and Pam Vanderweil's
triple chased the opening Exeter
runs across the plate.
Marlene Parsons singled to
open the Greys second trip to
the plate and scored on a couple
of infield outs tb put her club in
Quite a change
A couple of ball games make quite a difference in
the type of odds being offered by oddsmakers on the
World Series. Before the series started in Cincinatti,
Saturday afternoon, the Reds were listed at 11-10 to
win the annual fall classic.
After the Orioles took the first two games, the
odds shifted to the Orioles side of the ledger 5-1 for the
series and 3-2 to take the third contest. These odds were
listed by Las Vegas oddsmaker Jimmy "The Greek"
Snyder.
The first two games of the series proved that
three or four run leads don't mean much to the sluggers
on the Baltimore club. The Orioles erased big leads in
both games to go to win.
The star to date has to be Brooks Robinson at
third base for the Orioles. Dick Beddoes of the Toronto
Globe and Mail called Robinson a two-handed vacuum
cleaner on the green carpeted infield at the Cincinatti
ball park.
The controversial play at home plate in the first
game Saturday was actually a case of four didn'ts.
Runner Bernie Carbo didn't touch the plate, catcher
Elrod Hendricks didn't touch Carbo and umpire Ken
Burkhart didn't get out of the way and he didn't call
Carbo safe as he apparently should have.
Despite vigorous arguments Cincinatti manager
Sparky Anderson said the next day that he felt Burkhart
made the only call possible and explained it this way:
"Sure, the way the play developed my man was
safe, but if Burkhart's not there, it's a routine play and
Carbo's out by 10 feet. I think the umpire knew what
happened and that's why he called him out. You can't
blame him for that.
"When a man's hustling he's in good position, and
he makes the right call. I'm not going to fault him. I'm
going to give Burkhart credit for making the call and I'm
going to tell him so. He called him out because he knew
he blocked off Hendricks."

To Punch Irnlach, a non-believer is anyone who
doesn't think the Buffalo Sabres will make the NHL
playoffs this year.
Shortly after the Sabres had settled into their
training camp at Peterboro, Imlach briskly announced
that his club would make the playoffs,
He added, "You can forget about Vancouver and
Toronto and the Red Wings didn't look like any ball of
lire to me, either. We will be there and you can bet On
it. Don't be a disbeliever and count us out before we
start."
