O. Times-Advocate, October 8, 1970 Greys get clobbered, are two games down FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS By Ross Haugh Parsons, Lynne Farquhar, Joan Campbell and Sheila Willert scored the final Exeter runs. I Big TV weekend Irish juniors play London The 1970-71 hockey season for the Lucan Irish junior gets underway Saturday night when they move into the London Gardens to meet the London Junior "C" club in an exhibition game. The Irish will again be competing in the district OHA junior "D" grouping. Most of last year's performers are back along with a few new faces. Bill Neil, top notch player with Lucan intermediate teams for many years has taken over as coach of the Irish. Jim Freeman is back as manager. Game time in London Saturday night is 8 P.m. 4 GETS HIGH SCORE — Carol Moore attained one of the highest scores ever rolled by a female bowler at the Exeter Lanes. She is shown here delivering a ball in the same style that gained her a triple of 937. T-A photo Practices underway for Junior Hawks The Exeter Greys find themselves belincl the eight-ball in the final round for the Western Ontario Athletic Association ladies "B" championship. In thr second game of a best-of-fi ve series, the Greys were trounced by Neustadt 31.6 Thursday night, on the Exeter diamond. The third game will be played tonight, Thursday, in Neustadt. If a fourth contest is necessary it will go at Exeter Community Park, either Sunday or Monday afternoon. The Greys opened with a three run rally in the first inning and looked as if they were still in contention for league honors. The home club scored four times in the second inning and the Exeter girls came bouncing back with a single run in the third to again bring the scoreboard even. The Neustadt club scored one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings and then broke loose with a seven run barrage in the sixth inning to break the game wide open. The visitors continued their scoring spree with five more scores in the seventh, six in the eighth and eight in the final frame. The Greys added two runs in the ninth and managed to load the bases when the game ended. In the Exeter first, Lynne Farguhar and Joan Camp bell each reached the base paths by the way of errors and scored on Anne Jorgensen's booming triple. The Grey catcher scored her team's third run on Glenda Fisher's infield out. The fourth Exeter run in the third came when Sheila Willert walked and came in on a solid hit from the bat of Glenda Fisher. In the ninth hits by Marlene 4 0 Shamrock sets schedule Sports fans should have a real time for themselves this coming weekend with no less than three major sports vying for top billing on television, The show gets on the road with the first showing of a National Hockey league game this year Friday night from Vancouver featuring the newest Canadian professional team, the Canucks from the British Columbia city. Several Canadian football games are slated for both Canadian networks over the three-day holiday weekend, and the World Series gets underway at the same time. After the convincing way that Baltimore disposed of the Minnesota Twins in the American league playoff we have little hesitation in calling the Orioles to dominate the annual fall classic. They should do the trick in five games. The Orioles have vast power at the plate from at least six sluggers. Their tremendous performances at the plate has apparently rubbed off on some of the weaker hitters on the club. In the first game against the Twins, pitcher Mike Cuellar slugged a grand slam home run. The Robinson boys, Frank and Brooks along with fellows like Boog Powell have the ability to put the ball out of the park at any time. We are happy to see the Detroit Tigers come up with a new manager. Billy Martin will certainly instill a lot of fight and desire into the Tiger club. Martin should transform the Detroiters into an exciting ball club with the emphasis on hustle. They have several young pitchers, including two from Canada that have shown a lot of potential even during a lost cause this season. John Hiller and Mike Kilkenny are the Canadians and they certainly should be around for quite a few years yet. One day about two weeks ago was probably the best day ever enjoyed by Canadian pitchers in the big leagues. John Hiller of the Tigers and Chatham's Fergie Jenkins each tossed a two hit shut-out on the same day. It was Jenkins' 22 win of the season for the Chicago Cubs and marked the fourth consecutive year the young right hander has turned in 20 or more victories. Advancing from midget ranks are Jim Guenther, John Becker, Brian Campbell, Bob Parsons, Brian Bestard, Ronnie Lindenfield, Gerard O'Rourke and Dennis Ferguson. Trying out from St. Marys are Norm Barr, Dave Somers and Jim Reardon. While they have been at the local workouts, Mike Hoy is trying. for a spot on the varsity team at the University of Waterloo and John Braid will be working out with the Waterloo Junior "B" Siskins. .ilmmiimiummoiffiffimmommininffimmut BOWLING SCORES Dart league lead to Dark Angels The Dark Angels gained a sweep of five points in Friday's second week of action in the Exeter Legion mixed dart league to move into first place. Mrs. Carol Moore came up with three excellent games and a tremendous triple of 937. The highest female score at the local lanes was a 956 thrown by Ruth Durand. The high score for men is 966 rolled by Ross Mathers in the 1964-65 season. Mrs. Moore started off with a 328 in the first game, fell off a bit to a respectable 275 and came roaring back in the last ten frames to post a score of 334. In her last game, she started with a strike, followed with a disastrous headpin, two strikes, two spares and finished off with six consecutive strikes. The first game started with six straight strikes and the second game was completed with five strikes in a row. Completing the roster of the Winkers in Sunday night's action Mrs. Moore and her husband Lloyd were Chuck and Nancy Becker and Dean and Joanne McKnight. Another whipper One of the top names in the wrestling field not only in Canada but throughout most of the world should be carried on for quite awhile yet. The name Whipper Billy Watson is synonymous with wrestling, especially in Ontario. The newest arrival on the wrestling scene is Philip Watson and he is known in the ring as Whipper Watson Jr. The 21-year-old son of the famous and now called Whipper Watson Sr. has been campaigning in Ontario the past three summers mostly in preliminaries on the same card as his father. Phil has been wrestling since he was 15, starting with the usual family bouts with his older brother John who also had a brief fling on the summer wrestling curcuit. A former University of Waterloo halfback, John is now head of the physical education department and wrestling coach at the Whitby High School. Whipper Jr. has patterned many of his holds after his father's style but has added a few flourishes of his own. The younger Watson is leaving shortly for England with Tom Pollard, who was one of his prize pupils when Phil was coaching wrestling at the YMCA in Barrie and operating a teaching program out of a barn on the family farm at Keswick. The young Canadian pair are expected to wrestle six nights a week mostly on the northern countries of Yorkshire and Lancashire. They also expect to go on to Spain. It was back in 1936 when a young Canadian named Bill Potts and four companions travelled by cattle boat and landed at Cardiff, Wales. Learning that wrestling was banned in that Welsh city, the five Canadians headed for England and four-year westling campaign. While wrestling in England Bill Potts changed his name to Whipper Billy Watson. He came back to Canada four years later with a sizeable reputation and that has increased ever since. Watson's four original companions also fared well on the mat. They were Tiger Tasker, Krusher Korman, Harry Joyce and the late Tommy Nelson. When in England Whipper Sr. wrestled for a Leeds promoter, George de Relwyskow, whose son is now also in the promoting business and will be handling the bouts for the younger Watson. Whipper Jr. has a long way to go to catch his father who has participated in more than 6,300 wrestling matches over the past 34 years. Scouting again Ron Bogart, the athletic director and senior football coach at South Huron District High School is again busy each Saturday afternoon this fall. For the second consecutive year, Bogart is handling scouting duties in the southern part of Ontario for the McGill Redmen of the Senior Intercollegiate football league. Tom Mooney, coach of the McGill team was the coach at the University of Waterloo when Bogart was a top backfielder there, a few years back. Bogart should have a "good book" on the University of Waterloo when they play McGill in Montreal this Saturday. He has been in the stands the two past Saturdays when Waterloo met McMaster and Western. After each game Bogart forwards a comprehensive report on the type of play used by both the offensive and defensive units of the team McGill will be playing the following Saturday. Bogart told us this week that McGill expects to remain in senior football despite reports that the University would not be supplying the finances after this year. Apparently alumni subscriptions will be used to keep the Montreal. University on the football, basketball arid hockey scene. LADIES'"A" LEAGUE HG (B. Sangster 707) 5 15 CH (E.
