EXETER T- A — SEPT. 24 South Huron District High School will be well represented at the annual Huron-Perth Conference golf tournament to be held in Mitchell Saturday. Candidates for the local team were chosen at an intramural tourney held Tuesday at the Exeter and Ausable golf courses. Competition was real close in the boys event with Scott Jackson, Don Gifford:and Dwight Jennison tying for the top spot with identical scores of 85. The fourth member of the team will be Ian Johnston who was one shot further back at 86. Al McLean shot a 87 and will also travel to Mitchell as a spare. The local girls will be competing against golfers from Seaforth, Goderich. St. Marys, Central Huron of Clinton and Stratford Northwestern. Boys teams will include Listowel, Seaforth, Wingham, Goderich, St. Marys, Central Huron, Mitchell, Stratford Northwestern and Stratford Central. Lynne Farquhar was the top performer in the girls division coming in with a 59 on the Exeter Course, Tuesday morning. Brenda Taylor was one stroke behind while Cathy Simmons was in with a 64 and Joan Rath followed with a 68. Judy Desjardine was next in line at 70 and will accompany the team to Mitchell, Saturday as a substitute, Others competing in the local tourney were Kathy Knight, Kathy Wells, Sharon Batten, Karen Hern and Cathy Grenier. Large crowd at car races The largest crowd of the season attended the final official stock car races held at the Ausable Valley track near Brinsley, Sunday afternoon. Close to one thousand fans watched two special 25-lap races in addition to seven other top notch races. Gord Bieber of Clandeboye drove his car 40 to the "A" season championship while Mel Livet in car 133/4 took top honors in the 25-lap "B" season championship. The "A" season point winner was Bill Damen while Bill Edwards of Exeter captured honors in the "B" points race. ACW The A.C.W. met on Thursday evening in the church basement with a good attendance. Mrs. Wm. Waghorn opened the meeting and a business discussion followed. Plans were made to donate baking to the St. Marys Hospital Auxiliary Bazaar. Mrs. Clayton Smith showed colored pictures taken on her recent trip to Europe which were of great interest to the group. Lunch was served by Mrs. John Simpson and Mrs. Ken Blackler. 4 H CLUB Kirkton No. 3, 4 H Club met at the home of Mrs. William Spence. The roll call was answered by eight girls. This club will be called "Wee Wooly. Workers." • Jean Doyle volunteered to do the exhibit for Achievement Day. Members were told how to shrinkproof material and make the material grain straight. The United Church Women met September 8 with 23 members present. The meeting was opened by a Hymn Sing led by Mrs. Glenn Copeland and Miss Jean Copeland. Mrs. Ken Parkinson gave a report on the School For Leaders held at Alma College, St. Thomas, and also conducted the business. Mrs. Ted Insley opened the worship service with quiet music and Mrs. William Dickey gave the meditation. Mrs. Lloyd Cowdrey read the scripture followed by a reading by Mrs. Jim Miller. Mrs. Marvin Hartwick gave an instrumental and Mrs. Dickey led in prayer. A very interesting group discu ssison was held on Education and led by Linda Thacker. MESSENGERS The Messengers held their meeting Sunday, with 28 members present. Lori Webb opened the meeting and members repeated the Messenger Motto. Karen Insley read the scripture and David Spence led in prayer. CalvinRodd read a poem followed by an instrumental by Elizabeth Levy. Mrs. Lloyd Cowdrey read a story and Mrs. Glen Copeland presented the study book. Terri Brintnell and Cheryl Brine took up the offering. Beauty contest set for Friday The beauty contest which continues to be one of the feature attractions at the Exeter Fall Fair will be held Friday night at the arena. Carf Cann who has been in charge of the beauty contest since it first began in 1966 expects to have at least eight contestants vieing for the crown. However, girls wishing to enter should do so early as the contest will be limited to the first 12 girls. All are welcome if they are between the ages of 15 and 21. Dress for the beauty contest is quite simple, a skirt and sweater. Continuing the judging policy adopted last year, points will be awarded solely on the girl's appearance and poise. Local jeweller, Earl Campbell is again donating a lady's Bulova watch to the winner. Area implement dealers and farm supply businesses are again sponsoring contestants by supplying them with banners and flowers. Girls in entering the contest must contact Mr. Cann by Friday noon at the latest to be eligible. The new queen will be crowned by last year's winner, Miss Patti Glenn.
