Last year teams from Exeter, Lucan, Ilderton, Lambeth, Dorchester and Huron East were entered in the league. Exeter will again have teams playing in the novice, pee wee, bantam and midget divisions. Crediton edged Exeter 6.5 in an exhibition pee wee baseball game at the Crediton diamond, Friday night. A return game will be played at Exeter Community Park to-morrow night, Friday at seven o'clock. The Crediton youngsters scored four times in the first inning and hung on to gain the narrow margin of victory. In the Crediton first, Paul Shapton and Howard Schenk doubled, Bill Hodge singled and first baseman Peter Wuerth cleared the bases with a long home run to deep left field. Larry Clarke singled and scored the fifth Crediton run in the second and Wuerth doubled and came around to score the final run for the winners in the bottom of the third. Exeter first hit the scoreboard in the second inning when Fred Robinson beat out a bunt and eventually scored. In the third Brad Taylor tripled and scored on Robinson's single. GRIDDERS GET READY —The two football clubs at South Huron District High School have settled down to serious practising this week in preparation for the opening of the Huron-Perth Conference schedule. The two clubs travel to Strathroy Saturday for an exhibition doubleheader. In the above picture Coach Doug Ellison is shown at the left with all candidates for his junior club. Assistant coach Jack Riddell is at the right. Below, Senior coach Ron Bogart is shown with all the returnees he has from his club of last year. Dufferin takes Rec 'A' title, Hawks lead Kin in S' set The keen competition between the men and ladies at the Exeter lawn bowling club continues. In Saturday's regular jitney, Mabel Glenn and Wilf Shapton finished in a tie for first place. They had identical scores of two wins, a plus of 12 and aggregate of 24. Gordon Hoggarth was second with a pair of wins, a plus of 5 and aggregate of 18. Placing third with a plus of 3 and aggregate of 21 to go with a double victory was Bill Lamp ort. An invitational mixed pairs tourney was played at the local greens Wednesday with a full list of entries necessitating play starting in the morning. The last open tournament of the season sponsored by the Exeter club will be a men's pairs event scheduled for September 26. This is the time of the year again when a number of sporting activities are vying for the limelight. Baseball is still with us for a couple of weeks, football is just nicely getting started and while the professional hockey teams are starting practices district teams and players are thinking about the new season. In big league baseball, only one of the four divisions have not decided a pennant winner as yet, The American league finalists will be the Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins while in the National league the Cincinnati Reds have cinched the western division championship. The National league east is a different story with Pittsburgh, New York and Chicago still in close contention. We are like most fans in this area in pulling for the Chicago Cubs because of the presence of Fergy Jenkins of Chatham on the Chicago roster. Jenkins will be trying for the second time this week to win his twentieth game of the season. If the big, strong, young Canadian can get his big win before the season ends it will mark his fourth consecutive season as a twenty-game winner. One of the most pleasant surprises of the current baseball season has to be the fine performances turned in by the Montreal Expos. In only their second season in the big leagues the Expos have been turning in a good and exciting brand of ball that has attracted large crowds to Jarry Park in Montreal. While the Montreal club is in the cellar in the eastern division they have won more games than four other clubs in the big leagues. With a lesser number of victories are San Diego of the National league and Kansas City, Milwaukee and Chicago of the American circuit. Football practices are in full swing this week at South Huron District High School with the junior and senior clubs getting ready for regular Huron-Perth Conference action. The local Panther squads will be travelling to Strathroy Saturday for an exhibition doubleheader and expect to open the season the following week. At the same time some district youngsters are taking off for various Ontario points and tryouts with junior hockey clubs. More than a half dozen members of last years Exeter junior Hawks are trying for positions on Junior "A" and "B" clubs. Goalie John Hay ter left for Kitchener Friday and the training camp of the Kitchener Rangers of the OHA Junior "A" ranks. Tuesday, Barry Baynham, Joe O'Rourke, Randy Preszcator and Pete Glover headed for Brantford and a tryout with that city's entry in the Western Junior "A" league. Friday, Randy Parsons and Larry Haugh are leaving for the camp of the Brampton Junior "B"s. John Braid will be trying to make the roster of the Waterloo Siskins. Baynham and O'Rourke have also been asked to attend the Stratford Braves camp and several others have been approached by the Petrolia junior club. Bill Fairbairn of town was a valued member of the Petrolia team last year. Fairbairn is currently playing football with Sarnia in the Ontario Rugby Football Union junior division and has also received an invitation to try his hockey talents with the Port Huron Flags of the International league. Jim Hayter of Dashwood who played with the junior Hawks two years ag6 and last year was with Stratford will be playing his hockey this year in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Jim has accepted a hockey scholarship at 'Lake Superior State College. The hockey coach at Superior State is Ron Mason, a native of Seaforth and for the past two summers an instructor at the hockey school and sports training camp at Huron Park. xf Rain interferes with girls games The weatherman has been the biggest opposition the Exeter Greys have faced during the past week. Al attempts to complete their Huron Ladies softball "B" final with Mitchell have been stalled by wet grounds. The Greys, leading the best-of-seven series three games to one will try to wrap things up on the Exeter diamond to-night, Thursday at nine o'clock. The winner of the Exeter-Mitchell series will go on to meet Cargill in the Western Ontario Athletic Association "B" final. In the "A" division, the Brucefield Bombers will be tackling Wingham. To-night's Greys game will be the second half of a doubleheader. The junior Hawks and Kinsmen meet in the Rec "B" final at seven o'clock. Jets start practice The Lucan-Ilderton Jets will be getting an early start in defence of their Ontario Hockey Association Intermediate "B" championship. Playing coach Jack Nairn has called the first workout for the Huron Park arena, Sunday morning at eleven o'clock and will follow up with another practice Tuesday night, September 22 at 7.30 at the same rink. Nairn has issued an invitation to any players in the district that would like to try out with the Jets. All corners will be given a good chance to show their wares in an attempt to make the roster. The Jets will again be backed by an enthusiastic and hard working executive headed by.president Barry Beech. Don Urbshott has relinquished the managerial duties to Doug Galloway but will fill the vice-president's position. Several weeks ago when listing the full slate of officers of the Jets in this column we failed to mention treasurer Barney Macklem. Sorry, Barney, like all handlers of cash you are one of the most important men on the club. second by centre fielder Ron Bogart. The Leafs went ahead in the third when catcher Dennis Carey singled, moved up on a wild pitch and came home when Bob Robinson slashed a sharp single through the right side of the infield. Murray Brintnell walked to open the Legion sixth and rode home on Ron Bogart's inside the park home run to reverse the score. Pinch hitter Don Appleby started the winning Dufferin rally in the sixth. He beat out a bunt and scored the tying run on a single by Lloyd Mathers. Larry Brintnell followed with a single to keep the rally going but was forced at second on Dennis Carey's ground-out with Mathers moving to third. Hub Hunter drove in the winning and insurance runs with a long triple to the far corners of the park. In the Legion seventh, Don Pickering was hit by a pitched ball and Dean McKnight and Jim Pinder walked but Dufferin hurler Bob Robinson settled down and got the next two batters in order to end the ball game. Early scoring All of the scoring in the Hawks 6-4 win over the Kinsmen Thursday night took place in the first four innings of play. The Hawks jumped out in front with a two run rally in the first inning, the Kinsmen notched a single run in the second and completed their game scoring in the third with a trio of markers. The Hawks added a lone run in the third and wrapped the game up with a three run outburst in the fourth frame. Bill Farquhar, Barry Baynham and Terry Bourne singled to produce the two Hawk runs in the first inning. In the Kinsmen second, Ron Dumoulin singled, moved to second on a passed ball and completed the base cycle on Bob Coleman's one base blow. The third Hawk run of the game came in the third when Bill Farquhar reached first on an error, moved up on a ground-out and scored on a single by Ron Janke. Only one base hit was needed to produce three Kinsmen runs in the third. Bob Callingham opened the inning with a single, George Pratt drew a walk and both Kin performers scored when Craig Davidson was safe on a Hawk fielding miscue. Davidson moved up on a couple of wild pitches and scored on Ron Dumoulin's sacrifice fly. The Hawks winning rally in the fourth was powered by four consecutive base hits after the first two batters were retired. With two out, Pete Revington kept the Hawks hopes alive with a single and Larry Haugh promptly tripled to tie the score 4-4. Bill Farquhar followed with the game winning blow to score Haugh and Barry Baynham bashed out a single to score Farquhar and complete the game scoring. Greg Revington, the winning pitcher for the Hawks picked up a total of five strikeouts while John Cross was on the mound for the Kinsmen and took the loss. The Dufferin Hotel Leafs won the "A" division championship of the Exeter and district Rec softball league at Huron Park Thursday night by edging the Exeter Legion by a score of 5-3. The hotelmen won the best-of-five series in three straight games. In the "B" division final, the junior Hawks lead the Kinsmen two games to one with the fourth game slated for Exeter Community Park tonight, Thursday at eight o'clock. The Hawks took a lead in a similar best-of-five series by edging the Kinsmen 6-4 on the Exeter diamond, Thursday night. All scoring but one run in the final Dufferin-Legion occurred in the first and sixth innings. Each team scored once in the first frame. Dufferin moved ahead with a single run in the third and the Legion bounced back with a two run rally in the top of the sixth to take a one run lead. The Leafs exploded for three runs in the sixth inning to cinch the victory but they had some anxious moments in the top of the seventh when the Legion boys loaded the bases with one out but they were unable to push any runners across the plate. In the Legion first, Murray Brintnell walked and scored on Cy Blommaert's single to left field. The score was quickly tied in the Dufferin half of the first when Colin Brewer doubled and scored on Bob Conrad's single to left. Conrad was tossed out at second on a throw from left fielder Jim Hewitt. With two out Dufferin pitcher Bob Robinson singled but he was also retired trying to reach second this time on a throw by right fielder Chub Edwards. To complete a rather unique situation, the first Dufferin batter in the second Dave Boudreau also singled and was thrown out at aS Hockey scholarships While many Canadians like Jim Hayter are taking advantage of hockey scholarships at American universities, the Canadian government, through an instrument known as Hockey Canada is making scholarships available to Canadian universities. Charles Hay, president of Hockey Canada, who is also the father of former Chicago Black Hawk forward Bill Hay said that 250 boys leave Canada each year to take hockey scholarships in the United States and that many of these stay on there after their playing careers end and are lost to the Canadian economy. Hay implies that his Canadian scholarship program will be effectively competitive against the American plan and stop the flow of Canada's best young players to American universities. This statement doesn't make much sense as nothing has yet been devised in this country to stop the flow of the best of anything south of the border. What the Hockey Canada program will likely do is develop a supply of educated hockey players who, if good enough, will move to the NHL where the money is and if not good enough will be used by Hockey Canada to implement its international program, whatever that may be. When the scholarship plan was first announced last July, it was stated that the awards would be valued at up to $2,000 each. Loth scholastic and hockey playing ability were considered in the awards, 0 LET'S GO THIS WAY • Patrick Riley seems to be a little unsure of which way he should go bu t his dog is heading lb the right direction for the rabies clinic at the Mensal! arena, Monday afternoon, T-A photo By MRS.
