affects the central nervous
system of animals and humans.
The symptoms produced by the
disease vary from incident to
incident, but, by and large, all
animals behave in a peculiar
manner and attempt to attack
other animals and thus
propagate the disease, as live
virus is frequently found in the
saliva of infected animals. The
disease is usually fatal if proper
evasive action is not taken prior
to the beginning of symptoms of
the disease.

The Huron Coun ty Beef
Improvement Association in
cooperation with the Ontario
Beef Improvement Association is
organizing a new mar k et
information and price reporting
system for area beef producers.
The service, called Canfax, is
operated using telecom-
munication machines which are
rented from C.N,-C.P. telex.
The proposed system will be
coordinated with present
existing systems in Canada and
the U.S. covering Calgary,
Chicago, Omaha and Toronto
markets.
A membership fee will be
charged to the producer. The
system then will supply him
with up-to-date market reports
on feeder and finished Cattle
from major Canadian and U.S.
community sales and terminal
markets, also live and dressed
sales direct to packers on
finished cattle, The producer
member must also report all
purchases, sales, conditions of
each and monthly inventory, to
the system. A weekly report and
market analysis will be mailed to
the members,
Present plans are to set up
one or two units in the Huron
County area,
A further information
meeting will be held at the
Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food
BOardroom, Aug. 25th at 8:30
P.M. Mr, Graeme
secretary manager of the Ontario
Beef Improvement Association,
is expected to attend the
meeting. Applications will be
available - for interested
producers.
Farmers urged
to make policy
Farmers were urged to get
involved in policy-making, last
week at a meeting in Cannifton in
Hastings County. Jack Hale,
General Manager of the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture, told
the OFA members present that
the Task Force on Agriculture
had shown that agriculture is at
the crossroads, as to who is going
to make agricultural policy. He
emphasized that farmers must
not let government have this
policy-making power by default.
"The farmers of this province
need an organization which can
act as an organized fire brigade to
fight the barn fires, as and when
they occur. And right now the
barn is on fire and we had better
mobilize ourselves," said Mr.
Hale.
He told the meeting that the
present unfair tax system has to
be fought here and now. "You
can't call on a fire brigade just
when you want it; you have to
keep it in good shape all the time
so when the emergency arises,
you are ready and able to put out
the fire. That's what we are trying
to do now and the barn is burning
and the fire must be put out," he
continued.
Keith Matthie, OFA
Vice-President from Grenville,
brought the members up to date
on the tax campaign. He
recognized that many people are
concerned that if the province
supplied all the funds for
education, local control would be
lost. "But we don't have local
control now," he said, "so we
can't lose anything, but if the
government really believes in
local control, they can give it to
local elected people and, at the
same time, pay all costs of
education out of provincial
funds. I say local control of
education is very important and
the 100% unconditional grants
can help achieve it if the
government wants it as much as
the people want it," he
concluded.
Rabies continue to pose a
potential hazard to dogs and cats
in Huron County. In order to
alleviate, at least in part, this
hazard, it has been decided by the
Health and Animals branch of the
Study control
of erosion
Soil erosion is costly for
farmers in terms of time and
labor, but current research at the
University of Guelph is
concerned with finding ways of
controlling erosion.
In experiments being carried
out by Professor J.W. Ketcheson,
Soil Science Department,
University of Guelph, it has been
shown that on slopes of 7 to 10%,
the root system of corn, along
with stover left on the soil
surface, will effectively hold the
soil in place. Forage crops have
also been studied and are even
more effective in holding the soil.
When a crop is harvested the
soil should be left unplowed, and
the stover or stalks left on the
ground surface. If the soil is
plowed or the stover removed,
the amount of soil runoff
increases substantially.
The land area, the degree of
slope, and the intensity of rainfall
are three variables which regulate
the amount of runoff, says
Professor Ketcheson. A heavy
shower will produce heavier
runoff than a slow, penetrating
rain, and the greater the slope, the
greater the potential erosion.
It is believed that fertilizers
contribute to water
contamination because when a
runoff occurs the fertilizer moves
with the soil into the streams.
Long-range studies in this area
include the use of manure and
fertilizers to be applied at various
times to check what effect the
timing of the application will
have on the soil.
It is known that fertilizer
nutrients will hold soil particles
together once they come into
contact with them. Preventing
soil erosion thus also prevents
fertilizers from contaminating
streams and waterways.
Engineers at the University of
Guelph, says Professor
Ketcheson, are attempting to
predict runoff under different
types of rain, which will in turn
allow soil scientists to predict the
amount of soil runoff under
specified management
conditions.
The Hydrology Station at the
University of Guelph, where the
experiments are carried out,
consists of a number of sloping
plots each 145 feet long. At the
bottom of the slopes are devices
to capture and measure the
amount of soil runoff. Once a
rainfall has occurred, water
samples are taken and analyzed
for soil particle and fertilizer
content.

Confirmed cases of rabies in
animals continued at a relatively
high level in Huron County in
the 12-month period ending
March 31, 1970.
Rabies cases involving both
domestic and wild animals
totalled 69 for the 12-month
period. This is 20 less than in the
previous year.
Huron County continues to
be among the counties of
Ontario with a higher incidence
of rabies. The wild life
population, with an increased
number of skunks in the area,
indicates that the occurrence of
rabies will increase during the
next 12-month period.
Skunks and foxes are the two
main groups of animals which
spread rabies from wild life to
our domestic animals, and for
this reason any unusual actions
in these animals should be
treated with extreme caution.
Contact between these
animals and domestic animals or
humans should immediately be
reported to the area Health of
Animals Branch in order that
proper action may be taken to
eliminate further spread of the
disease.
Rabies is a virus disease which
