Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Noakes
have returned from three week's
vacation in Scotland and
England.
After spending a week with
their son and his wife, Dr. and
Mrs. David Noakes in Edinburgh,
they proceeded northward
through Scotland to the Orkney
Islands where they visited
relatives.
They continued to tour
through Scotland to Stomness
where Mrs. Noakes' father, the
late James Sangster was born, and
to Rackwick, Hoy, where his
mother was raised, then on to
Kirkwall, Orkney and southward
into England.
Mr. and Mrs. Noakes also
visited Bexhill where Archie
Noakes was born and called on
the family of Mrs. Lloyd Noakes
at Reigate,
While on tour the couple
enjoyed seeing many castles and
cathedrals, and although they
found the countries scenic and
interesting they reported they
were happy to be natives of
Canada.

The recent "Strawberry
Fields" rock festival at Mosport
attracted a great deal of attention
and r 'suited in some criticism of
the fact police failed to move in
to charge youths who were
openly using and selling drugs.
No doubt there were others
equally concerned about the fact
the youths were allowed to swim
in the nude without any police
intervention.
On the surface, the situation
does appear to be unfair.
Individuals who would attempt
such acts in most other places so
openly would quickly be charged
for their law breaking activities.
The difference, of course, is a
matter of numbers. Persons in a
crowd of 50,000 can use the sheer
weight of those numbers to
perform deeds that an individual
or small group could not.
Any police attempt at
cracking down on illegal drugs or
nude swimming at Mosport could
easily have erupted into a
riot-type situation which could
have resulted in injury or death to
members of the crowd or the
police.
, There's safety in numbers and
unfortunately this fact is well
recognized by many people who
use it to infringe upon the rights
of others — such as motorcycle
gangs.
Only when lives are
endangered or wanton
destruction of property is taking
place should police be expected
to face insurmountable odds to
enforce the law.

Since the new law was put into
effect, deaths and injuries due to
traffic collisions in Ontario have
taken a sharp drop.
According to figures released
by the Ontario department of
transport, 109 fewer people were
killed on the roads in the first six
months of this year and there
were 1,751 fewer injuries
compared with the same six
months of 1969.
This represents a reduction of
14.7 percent in the number of
deaths and 5.1 percent in the
number of injuries.
The department is also
investigating the possibility that
increased seat belt use might be a
factor in the reduction of deaths
and injuries.
Whatever the reason, it is
certainly a most encouraging
trend, although when it is noted
that 633 persons lost their lives
and 32,590 were injured in the
first six months of this year, it is
clearly evident that we still have a
long, long way to go in making
our highways — and those who
drive upon them —safer.

The recent edition of the
Medical Post contained the
following items which may be of
interest to readers:
- The only real improvement in
waste disposal in the past 50 years
was putting a motor instead of a
horse in front of the garbage
truck.
- While a male birth control
pill will undoubtedly be
developed, the closest thing so far
is to televise sports events 24
hours a day.
- In our society, child raising
remains the chore of the
untrained, accomplished more by
luck than good management.
Discrimination is widely taught.
Fear, hate and violence are
coinmon household entities,
Self-indulgence and hypocrisy are
modern everyday values. To zero
in to the heart of today's
problems, including drugs, sex,
alcoholism, delinquency,
alienation and dropouts, means
to take a hard objective look at
parenthood.

I'm getting mad.
I can put up with my normal
stupidity. Like a dunner from the
revenue people for a $65 fine. Or
going out to put our suitcases in
the trunk of the car and finding it
full of elm blocks for the fireplace
which my father-in-law had given
me last spring, and having to
unload them in the heat and my
brand new sport shirt. Or having
the cat claw me about the head
and shoulders on three separate
occasions, because she doesn't
like driving in a car. That was my
wife's stupidity.
But I can't help feeling that
there's something sinister, some
kind of a trend, in all the other
little "accidents." Somebody out
there is trying to get me.
Today I'm convinced of it.
Woke up with violent stomach

the same things last night as the
others in the house. Why should I
be the only one to wind up with
dire rear? Why?
