Seems he carted the cheque back to his native England in his trousers' pocket and his dutiful wife immediately sent the pants off to the cleaners without checking the pockets. Guess that's what you call being taken to the cleaners. Think he retrieved the cheque O.K. but I feel sorry for his wife. I know, from first hand experience, what a scolding she got;. * * * OTHER MEN MAY MOAN about their wives going through their pants pockets, but my mate's problem is in reverse. It must be lack of communication. Apparently, when he dumps his clothes on the bedroom floor he is only telling me to hang them up, while I assume, naturally enough I think, that he wants me to throw them in the washing machine. As a result, the things I have washed you wouldn't believe. The $42.00 I once put through the automatic came out beautifully and for a day or two we could boast of having the cleanest money in town, Other items turned out not so well. I found to my sorrow that important receipts and papers will simply fall apart at the creases after 20 minutes of gyrating and spinning, and all the king's horses and men had a joy ride with Hump ty Dump ty compared to me trying to piece all the bits together again. But the worst time of all, ( I still shudder when I remember) was when I inadvertently threw in a garment which held a valuable legal document. Legal paper is made for rough usage and I thought I was home free until I unfolded it to find it had all been written in washable ink and was as blank as a newly plastered wall. Let me tell you, I made sure I had my glasses on and was holding the baby when I tremblingly passed along that piece of news. Even so, the blood rose so high in my spouse's eye, I turned and high tailed it for my life. After several days of shock and silence he finally regained his voice enough to inform me coldly, and quite callously I thought, that divorces were becoming much easier to get and he was sure any judge would lend him a kindly and sympathetic ear. * * * Well, I'm really trying to do better. But, the darned washing machine keeps fouling me up and causing another problem. I don't know about your machine, but, I do know mine houses some kind of a monster who eats and thrives on men's socks . . . but only one of each pair. How else can you explain why I end up with 27 socks all of different colors and hues. I know it's the machine that's doing it . . . but my husband insists it's my fault. Hence, I catch him furtively hiding his precious dirty socks, like a miser his gold, so I can't find them and lose them and I think he gets up and washes them after I've gone to sleep at night. A wonderful solution has just come to me, I'll buy all his socks the same color from now on. My man may not end up on the best dressed list wearing green socks with every outfit, but it will sure confuse that miserable monster in the washing machine. * * * DO YOU WANT A BOOK that will answer questions on the history of Ontario?
