Dufferin, Vets win twice in Rec softball loop action Softball fans in the area are again in for a special treat on Civic Holiday when the second annual fastball tournament will be held at Exeter's Community Park. Last year a large crowd was on hand throughout the day to watch eight exciting games of ball in the tourney sponsored by the Exeter and district Fastball Association and this year's schedule should be no exception, The first of eight games gets underway at 9:30 in the morning and the champions should be declared at about the same time at night. The first game of the day pits the Exeter Rec league all-stars against the Aberarder Angels. The second contest Slated for eleven o'clock has Shedden meeting Ingersoll. At 12:30, Goderich takes on last year's championship club from Bridgeport while Sturdy Towing of London tackles the Strathroy Jets in the first preliminary game at two o'clock. Winners of games one and two meet at 3.30 while the 12.30 and two o'clock winners play at five o'clock with the championship contest slated for 8:30. The consolation final will be played at 7.30. The team emerging as the tournament champion will receive a cash prize of one hundred dollars in addition to the Labatt trophy. Conklin Lumber will present the most valuable player of the day with a picnic table and Snell's Shell is again offering two dollars for each home run hit. Last year this offer cost owner John Snell about thirty dollars. The Exeter all-stars pitching staff for Monday will include Don Pickering, Don Bell, Bob Robinson and Gord Slaght. Slaght has been named as local coach with Jim Pinder as his assistant and the captain is Gerry Finnen. Another Big Day Also on Monday, the McGillivray township park at Lieury will be a busy spot with a full afternoon and night of softball activities planned. The program gets rolling at twelve o'clock noon with Lieury and Corbett of the McGillivray township league meeting. At 1:30 West McGillivray takes on Brinsley while Shipka and Mount Cannel tangle at three o'clock. An exhibition girls softball game is slated for five o'clock with Lieury expected to meet the Ailsa Craig girls. Seven o'clock at night will find the Lieury Old Timers taking on a similar team from,Ailsa Craig. The feature game of the day will get underway at nine with the Lieury men's team playing the McGillivray All-Stars. Amateur Rodeo Exeter Community Park will be the scene of an amateur rodeo on Friday, August 7. Most of the events that feature professional rodeos are on the program including bronc riding, bare back riding, goat tying along with the various exciting games. Gary Hartman was the top Dashwood hitter with a perfect night at the plate getting a double and three singles in four appearances. Pete Kleinstiver also had a perfect night with a single and three walks in four trips to the plate. Mark Leblanc was best at the plate for Huron Park with two singles to go with the same number of walks in four trips. Pete Anderson notched a single in addition to two bases on balls. Brian Bestard went. the first four innings on the went_ mound gaining seven strikeouts while Jim Guenther finished up picking up five strikeouts. Cowboys, Indians romp this week By MICHELLE HARRISON Exeter was host to the annual Lake Huron Zone Playground Play day this year. Playday, involves several towns competing against each other for a trophy. The games played this year were bor do nball, archball rounders, dodgeball and relays. Exeter placed second amongst seven other towns, and on behalf of the supervisors I would like to congratulate all children who were involved in playing. The enthusiasm and excitement our teams displayed was tremendous, and because of their hard work in practice we were able to defeat five other towns. The scores were as follows: Kincardine, 97 points; Exeter, 82 points; St. Marys, 60 points; Chesley, 59 points; Walkerton, 58 points; Hanover, 47 and Owen Sound, 44. The older children spent most of last week practicing for playday. Crafts and games continued as usual for the younger children. This week is entitled Cowboys and Indians and crafts have been geared towards this theme. Friday there will be aparade from Kin Park to Riverview Park followed by a bean and wiener supper. It is hoped that we can take the younger children away for a day sometime in the near future, since they' were not involved in playday. %Then the exact time and place is decided, parents will be informed. The wading pool is open Monday to Sunday to all children who are not old enough to swim in the swimming pooh Once again I would like to congratulate and thank all children involved in playday. Dufferin Hotel and the Exeter Legion were the only clubs to win two games in a full schedule of eight games during the past week in the Exeter and district Rec softball league. The Dufferin club downed the Crediton Tigers 9-2 and outscored the Exeter junior Hawks 12.3. The Legion dumped Custom Trailers 9-1 and downed Grand Bend 11-8. The Exeter Kinsmen split their two games of the week, outscoring the Hawks 22-15 while dropping a 104 verdict to Grand Bend. In other action, Dashwood Industries outlasted Custom Trailers 20.17 while the Crediton Tigers shaded Dashwood Industries 9-8 in an extra inning contest. WHIFFS TEN Bob Robinson on the mound for the Dufferin team struck out ten Hawk batters as his mates chalked up the 12-3 victory. Dufferin scored eight times in the second inning to pave the way to the win. They notched single runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth frames while the Hawks tallied once in the fourth and two more times in the sixth. Hub Hunter crossed the plate with the first Dufferin marker in the second. A single by Gerry Carey, Paul Cronyn's triple and doubles from the bats of Gerry Riehl, Carey and Hunter provided the power for the eight run rally in the second stanza. Riehl doubled for the second . time in the third to send Hub Hunter and Colin Brewer home after registering singles. Three straight walks and Bob Robinson's one base blow sent the eleventh Dufferin run home in the fourth. A walk to Paul Cronyn and Bob Robinson's triple completed the scoring for the hotelmen in the sixth: Terry Bourne scored the first Hawk run in the fourth after walking while Larry Haugh's single and Bill Bourne's double were responsible for the final two Hawk scores in the sixth. VERY STINGY Robinson was in a stingy mood during the 9-2 Dufferin win over Crediton. The big right hander allowed only two hits with both coming in the bottom of the last inning. In the first six innings he faced only nineteen batters, walking Brian Hodgins in the third inning. After two were out in the seventh and Robinson was only one out away from a no-hitter, Jim Finkbeiner beat out an infield roller, Bob Hodgins was safe on an error and both came home on Gord Slaght's double. Dennis Carey's single, a double by Colin Brewer and Paul Cronyn's home run started the Dufferin club off with a three run rally in the second. Singles by Dennis Carey and Cronyn along with two Crediton errors allowed three Dufferin runners to score in the third. Bob Robinson's bases empty homer to lead off the fourth upped the Dufferin run total to seven. Three walks and Bob Robinson's single sent the final two runs for the winnershome in the sixth. DOUBLE DOES IT Pitcher Gord Slaght's double with two out in the bottom of the eighth sent Murray Hodge home with the deciding run in Crediton's 9-8 win over Dashwood Industries. Hodge was on with a single. Dashwood scored a run by Carl Butson on four consecutive walks in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings, Each club started out in a scoring way early with the Industries team holding a 431ead after the first inning of play. Don Mantey's triple and singles from the bats of Frank Boyle, Carl Butson, Dale Skinner and Larry Wein produced the opening rally for Dashwood. Crediton moved in front with a two run outburst in the second on singles by Joe Regier, Ron Grasdaht and Murray Hodge, Dashwood was right back with the same number of runs in the top of the third to move ahead again by a single run. tlon Mantey opened with a single and Dale Skinner'followed with a bases clearing home run. Doug McArthur smashed a bases empty homer in the seventh to give the Industries club a 7-5 edge on the scoreboard. Singles by Gord Slaght, Jim Finkbeiner and Brian Hodgins sent two Crediton runs home in the fifth and Slaght doubled to score Ron Grasdahl to put the Tigers in front 8-7 in the sixth. Brian Hodgins and Gord Slaght shared the pitching duties for Crediton while Dale Skinner went the distance for Dashwood. Grand Bend scored five times in the top of the seventh inning to ensure their victory over the Kinsmen by a score of 10-4. The summer resort boys scored twice in the first inning and were never headed although their margin dwindled to two runs at the end of six innings of play. Dick Coulter doubled and Paul Greenwood hammered a triple to score the first Grand Bend markers. Larry Lovie singled and scored in the second. Stan Lovie singled and Barry Clarke hit a home run to account for two more Bend runs in the fifth. Three Kinsmen errors, a walk and singles by Larry Lovie and Dan Dalton allowed the five Grand Bend runs to score in the seventh, Jack Glover singled to open the Kinsmen first and scored on a similar hit by George Pratt. Glover doubled in the fifth to send Don Bell across the plate. In the sixth Jim Russell drew a walk and came around to count on Ron Dumoulin's single, With one out in the seventh Bob Callingham singled and was forced around on three consecutive walks. Kyle Harrison was the winning pitcher for Grand Bend while Don Bell took the loss for the Kinsmen. Dashwood Industries scored seven times in the third inning and ten more in their fourth trip to the plate in downing the Custom Trailers 20-17. Walks were mainly responsible for the two big Dashwood innings. Brian Hosker doubled in the third frame and Frank Boyle Bowling tourney set Wednesday The biggest and most important lawn bowling tournament of the year is slated for the Exeter greens next Wednesday afternoon. Entries are expected from many points in Western Ontario for the annual Merchants and Manufacturer's men's doubles tourney. Tuesday night, the local club played host to a large group of bowlers from the Mitchell club and everyone enjoyed a good night of jitney play. On regular play, Saturday night, Howard Ince proved to be the best of the local bowlers with two wins, a plus of 16 and aggregate of 40. Ivan Hill was close behind in second spot with a plus of 15 and aggregate of 26 to go with a double win. Wellington Brock and Norma Chapman were next in line with a plus of 11 but Brock's higher aggregate of 26 gave him third place, Lizzie Lamp ort placed fourth. Stock drivers shore prizes Competition was keen at the weekly stock car races held Sunday at the Ausable track near Brinsley with ten drivers each winning one event. The results are as follows: First race - Steve St, Pierre, Rick Glanville, Bob Woodley; second race - Bill Dairen, Fred Veal, Terry Haugh; third race - Terry Hickson, Stan Whitehead, Don Dundas; fourth race - Bill Edwards, Bob Woodley, Dave Mawdsley; fifth race - Stan Whitehead, Mel Trevithick, Bud McKiVer. Sixth race - Fred Veal, Don Dundas, Terry Hickson; seventh race - Don Riley, Bud McKiver; eighth race - Bill Dither, Gary Trevithick, Stan Whitehead; B Feature '- Gord Bieber, Bob Woodley, Dave Mawdsley. A Feature - Gary Leger, Bill Damen, Fred Veal. singled while Don Cooper and Boyle had hits during the fourth frame uprising. Dave Elston and Frank Boyle scored for Dashwood in the fifth and Larry Wein chalked up the final run in the sixth. Rick McDonald scored the first Custom run in the first and singled along with Fred Wells in the second to help produce four Custom runs. Dashwood errors helped Customs score six times in the third while triples by Bill Brock and Rick McDonald scored two more in the fourth. Tom Dalrymple doubled Bill Chipchase home in the sixth while triples by Fred Wells and LarryWillert along with a single by McDonald produced the final three Custom markers in the sixth. KIN SWAMP HAWKS Walks and home runs were mainly responsible for the 22-15 Kinsmen win over the junior Hawks, Thursday night. A combination of four Hawk pitchers gave up fourteen bases on balls, hit four batsmen and gave up one home run while their team-mates collected three round trippers from the offerings of Ron Dumoulin and Don Bell on the mound for the Kinsmen. Singles by Craig Davidson, Walt Tiedeman, Gary Spencer and George Pratt and Jim Russell's homer along with four free tickets to first powered the opening inning eleven run rally for the winners. In the third, Bob Callingham, Russell and Davidson scored for the Kinsmen without the aid of a hit. In the fourth four more runs came across on only two hits by Gary Spencer and Bob Callingham. The Kin scored three more times in the sixth on walks and added the final tally in the sixth on singles by Walt Tiedeman and Don Bell. The Hawks opened their scoring in the first when Larry Haugh was hit by a pitch and scored on singles by Bill Farquhar and Barry Baynham. In the second the junior hockeyists scored five times. Pete Lawson and Greg Revington opened the frame with walks and both came home on Bob Baynham's double but the team manager was out at third. Pete Revington followed with a single, Larry Haugh walked and both came in on Barry Baynham's homer. Two walks, a single by Terry Bourne and a triple from the bat of Bill Farquhar chased three more runs home in the fourth, The Hawks broke loose with five hits in the top of the seventh, including two home runs to score six times. Pete Lawson and Larry Haugh clubbed the round trippers while Pete Revington doubled, brother Greg singled and Barry Baynham tripled. Barry Baynham, Bill Farquhar, Greg Revington and Larry Haugh shared pitching duties for the losing Hawks. While arrangements have not been completed it is mcneeted the Huron-Perth Intertnecilate baseball league playoffs will start this weekend. The Dashwood Tigers travel to Mitchell Friday night to take on the )3P's in one of the last games of the schedule. Thorndale finished in first place in the league standing with Clinton, Dashwood and Mitchell following in that order, Using a different playoff set-up this year, the first place finisher meets the fourth place club in the first round with the second and third place clubs meeting. As the only "D" club Dashwood will move directly into OBA play while Clinton does the same in the "B" category and Mitchell and Thorndale battle for the right to go pain "C" play. The Dashwood Tigers became spoilers in the last week of the schedule upsetting the previously unbeaten Thorndale club in two games played on the Dashwood diamond, They edged Thorndale Wednesday by a 3-2 count and came out on the right side of a 11-9 score Tuesday night. In between the Tigers were losing 11-10 to the Clinton Colts in a ten inning contest and were shaded 5-2 by the Stratford junior club in an exhibition contest in Stratford, Sunday. SUFFER FIRST LOSS On the Dashwood diamond Wednesday night, the Tigers handed league leading Thorndale their first loss of the season. The Tigers were able to hold onto an early lead and held off a two run Thorndale rally in the seventh to take the decision by a 3.2 count. Bob Hoffman walked to open the Dashwood fifth and came in to score what proved to be the winning run on John Hayter's double. The same two Tigers were involved in the third inning two run rally Hoffman singled, Hayter drew a walk and both completed the base cycle on Bill Schade's single to left field. George Taylor's double was the blow responsible for the two Thorndale runs in the seventh. Horse show is completed The weatherman co-operated with the Hensel' Western Horsemen, Friday night and the balance of the Frontier Days' horse show was completed. Danny Turvey took the High Point Jr. Trophy donated by Ron Wareing along with both the Equitation with Ponies trophy donated by John Reid's Lunch and the Pony Race over 45" pony trophy donated by Hyde Bros. Jr. Equitation with Horses trophy donated by Huron Motors of Zurich was won by Nancy Swartz. Pat Cornish of London won the Conklin Lumber Jr. Barrel Race Trophy with sister Lynn taking the Fuss Electric trophy in the under 45" pony race, The Exeter Saddle Club trophy for the Little Britches Ride was won for the second year by Linda Cording. Gail McIntosh on her "Nicky" from Delaware captured both the Jr. Pole trophy from John O'Neil, Exeter and the Sr. Pole trophy from Ball & Macauley. Jim Rundle took Custom Trailers High Point Sr. trophy along with Boise Cascade's Flag Race trophy; John Elder Enterprises Pony Express and Al's Super Save Barrel race trophy. Tom Baker of London captured Hensall Motors Western Pleasure Trophy. The Rescue Race trophy donated by Cook's Div. of Gerbro Corp. was won by Eric Vanneste and Jack Rundle the top jumper. Show announcer Arnold Paisley presented his trophy for "Western Riding" to Karen Cornish of London and the "Reining" trophy donated by Taylor Logging of Hensall was won by Bruce Hicks on sister Jo Ann's entry. nick Bedard went the distance on the Dashwood mound and recorded even tlirikeOutte- At1060011g and Kennedy ?hared pitching chores for the losers. BROTHER COMBINATION The Colquhoun brothers, Laurie and Cam combined to provide most of the hitting Power in the Clinton Colts 11-10 win over the Tigers. Cam Colquhoun nomered with pitcher McDonald on base in the to_p of the tenth inning to give the Clinton club the margin of victory. Laurie Colquhoun homered in the nrst inning with two on and repeated the trick in the top of the eight with one mate aboard, Jim Hayter singled Dave Ratz home with the third Dashwood rim in the fourth after Bob Hoffman and John Hayter had walked in the third and scored on three Clinton errors. Consecutive singles by Jim and John Hayter, Bill Schade and Brian Bestard scored two more Tiger tallies in the sixth while Whitey Denomme doubled and scored a single run in the seventh. Bob Hoffman singled in three Alms in the bottom of the ninth with no one out to tie the score at 9.9 but he was unable to get home With the potential winner, After Colquhoun's homer in the tenth, the Tigers bounced back with .one run with Gord Vincent doubling and scoring on an error. Lefty Dave Rat pitched the complete ten-inning game for the .Dashwood club. Three .Dashwood errors in the bottom of the eighth allowed the Stratford juniors to score three times and post the 5-2. exhibition win over the Tigers, Former Dashwood hurler Bob Webb was on the Stratford mound for the first three innings and gave up only one hit to his -former mates, a single to Jim Hayter in the first inning. Bob "Eppie" Wein went the first six innings on the Dashwood hill with Dick Bedard finishing up, Brian Dahrns was the top Stratford hitter with two triples to his credit.
