Stan Lovie started the rally with a single, Jim Hayter drew a walk, John Hayter was safe on a Mitchell error and everybody came in to score on Pete Ravelle s long home run. The fifth run came on Bill Schade's single, a passed ball and infield out. The top of the batting order was responsible for the final four run Dashwood outburst in the top of the fifth. • Jim Hayter started things off with a walk. Bob Hoffman followed with a single and John Hayter doubled. Pete Ravelle's single, his third hit of the night scored Jim Hayter and Hoffman and Bill Schade singled to score two more of his team-mates. outburst in the fourth. In the third consecutive singles from the bats of Dale Skinner, Jim Finnen and Brian Hosker produced the fourth run for DIL. Doug McArthur's double sent Frank Boyle scampering home with the final Dashwood run in the sixth. HOME RUNS HELP A pair of home runs helped Custom Trailers down the junior Hawks 7-2. Tom Dalrymple homered with Dashwood midgets win twice remain unbeaten in WOAA Tigers are victorious in Huron-Perth play One begins to wonder about the mentality some people when you hear about some of the mischief and other deeds of vandalism that have occurred recently at the Exeter swimming pool, Riverview Park and all parks within the Ausable River Conservation Authority watershed,. We were at the regular meeting of RAP Monday night and heard some of the ridiculous things that have been done in recent weeks, RAP, town council, park, town employees and the service clubs have been doing a wonderful job in giving us one of the most beautiful parks in the country and it's a shame to have a small minority do their best to spoil the efforts of those involved. The cases of throwing contents of garbage cans over the fence into the water is certainly uncalled for as is the matter Of climbing the fences at night and taking lifeguard towels that were hanging up to dry and stuffing them in the skimmers. Recreation director Alvin Willert said plugging the skimmers could certainly cause the motors on the water system to burn out which would involve a large expense in repair. Everyone in the area is being asked to keep a special look out for any "uncertain activities" seen around the pool and park area. A reward of twenty-five dollars is still in effect for wilful damage in the town and this has been collected on two occasions in the last couple of years for reporting similar acts of mischief. At the same time, the Ausable River Conservation Authority is posting a one hundred dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons causing damage to their park properties. Resources manager Bryan Howard tells us every weekend some damage is done in most parks within his area. Signs have been removed at the Cut and other parks and beach parties are being held every Saturday night at the new Parkhill park area. The Morrison Dam park also felt the brunt of vandalism over the weekend with a count of picnic tables showing two missing with one other being thrown over the Dam. Let's everyone join in to help keep our park and recreation areas as nice as possible in a time when parklands are at a premium due to the increase of construction and commercialism. Each year we hear many fine comments from visitors of the condition of Riverview Park in particular and most weddings in the area use the park for picture taking. Strange Plays So far this year we have restrained ourselves from saying very much about our favorite professional baseball team, the Detroit Tigers. The Bengals haven't given us very much to cheer about as far as pennant hopes are concerned but their games of the last week or so have provided the fans with unusual, strange and also exciting happenings, some of which have set records. Did you ever hear of a three-quarters of a grand slam home run? Well, this actually happened to Dalton Jones of the Tigers Thursday night at Tiger Stadium against the Boston Red Sox. In a pinch hitting role; Jones appeared to achieve the ultimate goal of any batter when he slugged the ball off the facing of the second deck in right field with the bases loaded. Then trouble started, Jones seeing the ball heading for home run territory kept running at top speed and passed team-mate Don Wert between first and second. Jones was called out for passing a preceding runner but the Detroit club was fortunate in the Jones' out being only the second out of the inning and the three runs ahead of him were able to score legally. Actually, Jones was only credited with a single because he did not officially reach second base. The Thursday night game was actually a "didn't game". Denny McLain pitched six innings and he didn't win or lose. Dalton Jones hit a home run and he didn't get to keep it. The umpire threw the entire Boston bench out of the game but they didn't go. The rhubarb between the Boston players and the umpires started in the sixth inning at the time McLain left the game. Dick McAuliffe came in to bat for the Tiger pitcher and on a fourth called ball Red Sox pitcher Mike Nagy became infuriated and was tossed out of the game by plate umpire Larry Napp after manager Eddie Kasko had decided to make a pitching change. Three Boston players were eventually thrown out of the game and the balance of the bench were ordered to the club house and could only come back to the field when they were needed in the line-up. Sunday's game with Baltimore also provided some unusual action. In one inning the Tigers bunted three consecutive times in sacrifice action and the next batter sent out a sacrifice fly that scored a run. On two of the bunts, 'errors were made that allowed Tiger runners to get on and the club to get four sacrifices in one inning, a new league record. Also, Sunday, Detroit batters led off the first three innings with home runs. Mickey Stanley started the first with around tripper, Bill Freehan followed suit to lead off the second and Al Kaline did the same stunt to start inning number three. The saying "seeing is believing" doesn't always apply, especially in a baseball game. In Saturday's game in Detroit with Baltimore, Al Kaline hit a long drive to deep centre field with two out in the Detroit ninth with the visiting Orioles leading by one run. Apparently all announcers doing the game on both radio and TV including those from Baltimore thought the ball was over the fence to tie the score and said so. But at the last moment a strong wind held. the ball up and Oriole centre fielder Paul Blair was able to make the catch to end the game, The Dufferin Hotel continued their winning ways in Exeter and district Rec softball play by winning two games over the past week. The Hotelmen blanked Grand Bend 7-0 and edged Exeter Legion 6-3. In other league games, Custom Trailer downed the junior Hawks 7-2, Grand Bend outscored Dashwood Industries 114 and the Crediton Tigers bested the Legion 8-5. SECOND FRAME RALLY Grand Bend scored six times in the second inning Monday night on the way to their 11-4 win over Dash wood Industries. Barry Clarke, Dick Coulter, Larry Lovie, Greg Hamilton, Kyle Harrison and S. Burley scored for Grand Bend in the second. Greg Hamilton tripled and Kyle Harrison and Barry Clarke singled during a four run Grand Bend Rain again curtailed action in the Huron-Perth intermediate baseball league with the Dashwood Tigers seeing action on only one occasion. The Dashwood club travelled to Mitchell Sunday night and swamped the BP's 13-1 in a game that was called after six innings because of rain. Southpaw Dave Ratz was on the mound for the Tigers, and allowed the Mitchell club only three hits, all coming in the bottom of the sixth. Ratz faced 23 batters, only five over the minimum in the shortened contest. The Mitchell hits were collected by Dennis Hughey, George Coveney and Bal lantyne. The Tigers started their hitting Autos run at Brinsley The only double winner at Sunday's Ausable Valley stock car races held at the Raceway south of Brinsley was Gary Leger who took the third and sixth races. Wins by scores of 10-6 over Zurich and 9-0 against Huron Park upped the Dashwood record to nine victories in the same number of starts. BIG INNING An eight run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning paved the way for the Dashwood win over Huron Park in Dashwood, Tuesday night, Pete Kleinstiver opened the fifth with a triple and was followed by singles from the bats of Gary Hartman, Gerard O'Rourke, Brian Bestard, Jim Guenther and Ed Holubowicz. Kleinstiver was back for his second trys of the inning and Crediton club breaks even The Crediton and Clinton pee wees met in back-to-back games in Western Ontario Athletic Association play and both team won one game. The first game of the two game set was taken by Clinton 9-7 on the Crediton diamond and Thursday back in Clinton the Crediton boys evened things up by handing the Clinton team their first loss of the season by a score of 7-6. Crediton with six wins in nine league starts will travel to Mitchell to-night, Thursday for the next regular game. In the 7-6 win over Clinton, Larry Clarke was the pitching hero, making his first appearance of the season in relief in the fourth inning. Clarke allowed only one run and struck out six opposition batters in picking up the pitching win. Clinton scored four times in the first inning and appeared to be well on the way to victory. Crediton bounced back with a trio of runs in the third as the result of a walk to Larry Clarke, singles by Wally Fydenchuk and Perry Preszcator and a triple from the bat of Mike Desjardine. Clinton scored single runs in the third and fourth to take a 6-3 lead. Larry Clarke tripled and Mike Desjardine tripled to send one more run across the plate in the fifth to cut the deficit to two runs. In the top of the sixth, Mike Jackson, Jeff Jensen and Wally Fydenchuk drew walks while Bruce Hodge singles and Mike Desjardine doubled to score three runs and give Crediton enough margin to post the victory. The Crediton boys scored three times in the fourth and four more in the sixth during their 9-7 loss to Clinton. Three walks along with Perry Preszcator's single and a double delivered by Mike Desjardine sent the first Crediton runs home. In the sixth four free passes combined with singles by Wally Fydenchuk and Bruce Hodge completed the Crediton club's scoring. Jeff Jensen, Kevin Datars and Mike Desjardine shared the pitching duties for Crediton. runs in the bottom of the seventh but failed to get enough markers to get closer. Ron Bogart's hit produced the final Legion markers. cleaned things up with a home run, In the sixth Brian .Bestard opened with a single, moved up A hole-in-one of a different kind The Ausable golf course has been the scene twice this year for a golfer achieving the ultimate goal by firing a hole-in-one. Tuesday night at the same course another unusual event took place but it wasn't quite as important as a hole-in-one but it was frustrating. One of the 25 players taking part in the weekly men's tournament, Gord Strang lost a brand new ball. He didn't lose it in the water/ rough or bush. No, you can never guess. The Strang ball disappeared down a ground hog hole. In actual competition Ernie Chipchase fired the low gross score with a round of 80 while Gar Johnston posted the best net score of 71. Butch Johnston and Lloyd Greenacre were runners-up for low gross while Gerry Sebrie and Earl Knoblauch posted the next best net scores. Walter Romaniuk, was named the most honest golfer of the night. on a walk to.
