Beware, poison ivy is poison
The Golden Years of old age
often become tarnished when
many old people are condemned
to living alone with ho relatives
nearby to cam, few friends to
visit, declining health, and a small
income.
The unthinking younger
generations, caught up in the
hustle and problems of their own
age are forgetful of the people
whose lives once brimmed over
with health and action and are
now filled with inactivity and
loneliness.
A telephone call, a short visit,
or a letter can make the day for
someone who is shut-in or alone.
The greatest gift we can give them
is some of our time.
Summer is an Ideal season to
pick up an older neighbor for a
drive to the lake or into the
country.
Many persons living alone find
cooking for themselves
uninspiring and a nuisance. A hot
meal, or a fresh appetizing salad
plate would be a welcome gift.
* * *
More and more people are
living to old age and one of the
major problems facing future
generations will be the housing
and caring for the aged.
Since most of us hope to reach
the age of 70 or better ,perhaps
now is a good time for us, in our
middle years, to consider what we
can do now to prepare for the
`golden years ahead'.
I have just finished reading 'So
Who's Afraid of Birthdays by
Anna Mow.
Mrs. Mow is almost 80, and in
her good common sense way she
suggests we cultivate attitudes
and habits to accept the later
years of our lives joyfully and
creatively.
She says if when we grow old
and no friends or relatives come
to visit we must ask ourselves
why.
* If we will talk only about
our ailments, our pains, the
condition of ourbowelsthen even
friends who come out of duty will
not stay long.
* If we insist on being
intolerant and critical we will be
poison to others. Our families will
dread their visits and others will
be driven away completely,
* Too many favors asked
without consideration of the
convenience of others will keep
them away. If someone shareshls
life with you, be grateful, but
remember, it is his life.
* Cherish old friends , . but
keep making new ones.
Visiting can be done by
telephone, A shut in with a
joyous soul can be a great blessing
to another by phoning and
chatting about common interests.
Time shared with another is never
monotonous and friendships
make life very worthwhile.
Anna Mow cites teachers and
persons from other professions,
who perhaps have never married,
but who may have given
themselves for other people's
children, usually waste little time
on self pity when they grow
older, They have trained
themselves to look after
themselves and have usually
taken the time to build up rich
friendships in their lifetime.
* * *
Some parents, when they have
raised their children, are full of
self pity and demand respect even
when they know they might not
be worthy of it,
Their adult children seem to
forget or not to care that their
aging parents have growing needs
but it is hard for even mature
adult children to feel a loving
responsibilityfor immature, hard
to please old folk.
Some children merely
perpetuate an attitude picked up
from their own parents.
There is a Mexican legend
about a man who did not want to
be burdened with his feeble and
critical old father.
He had his young son take the
old man to a mountain cabin and
leave him there with food and a
blanket.
When the boy returned with
half the blanket the father asked
him why, and the lad replied, "I
am saving this half of the blanket
for you, Father!"

Returning to Mrs. Mow's book
she says the fear of growing
helpless and useless is greater than
COFFEE ANGEL PIE
(8 servings)
Pie plate, 9-inch
Saucepan, 1-quart
CRUST
1 1/3 cups chocolate cookie
wafer crumbs (approx. 20
cookies)
2 tablespoons sugar
'A teaspoon cinnamon
5 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 cup finely chopped
blanched almonds
FILLING AND TOPPING:
1 quart coffee ice cream, softened
2/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup water
2 egg whites
%e cup whipping cream
2 teaspoons cocoa
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup chopped blanched
almonds, toasted
Chocolate curls
To prepare Crust: In a small bowl
the fear of death itself.
The reason, she says, is that it
is mach harder to receive help
than to giveit, It is much harder to
be still than active.
But most of us have nothing in
our busy lives to prepare us for
uselessness and helplessness.
So, we must strive to learn to
be a gracious receiver as well as a
gracious giver.
She tells of an old lady,
helpless in body, speechless from
several strokes but who still had a
clear mind, a warm heart, one
hand in good condition and two
ears in perfect working order.
People came to her room to be
uplifted . "She always smiled at
the right time, reached out her
one good hand to express the joy
or sympathy of her heart,"
A sense of humour is to be
cherished at any age, Shakespeare
advised, "With mirth and laughter
let old wrinkles come,"
We should try to develop a
sense of serenity. Remember, 'in
quietness and confidence shall be
your strength.'
And we must condition
ourselves to be flexible in the
midst of change.
Whether we prepare ourselves
for it or not advancing years bring
change and many new
adjustments and if we can train
ourselves to accept them before
they happen we will be well on
the way.
When the `good old days' are
gone forever let's look forward to
the new adventures and
challenges ahead.
Poet Edwin Markham knew
the secret when he penned these
lines:
I am done with the years that
were: I am quits:
I am done with the dead and the
old.
They are mines worked out: I
delved in their pits:
I have saved their grain of gold.
Now I turn to the future for wine
and bread:
I have bidden the past adieu,
I laugh and lift hand to the years
ahead:
"Come on: I am ready for you!"
mix together crumbs, sugar and
cinnamon; stir in butter and '/2
cup almonds. Press crumb
mixture firmly and evenly against
bottom and sides of pie plate,
building up slightly around rim.
Chill in freezer. Spoon ice cream
into crust and return to freezer.
To prepare Topping: In saucepan
combine 2/3 cup sugar and water.
Bring to a boil and cook rapidly
until syrup spins a thread (about
7 minutes or 232 degrees F. on
candy thermometer )While syrup
is cooking, beat egg whites until
stiff. While beating at high speed,
gradually pour syrup over egg
whites; continue beating until
mixture holds shape. Chill. In a
chilled bowl whip together
cream, cocoa and salt until stiff.
Carefully fold whipped cream
and 1/4 cup toasted almonds into
chilled meringue only until
blended. Mound onto pie filling;
garnish with chocolate curls.

Read pesticide
/abets carefully
There's an old saying about
taking horses to water but not
being able to make them drink.
Today that proverb could be
altered to read "You can put a
label on a pesticide bottle, but
you can't make people read it".
Which is a pity, because those
labels should be read.
Professor C.B. Kelly,
Department of Botany,
University of Guelph, points out
that it's just plain common sense
to read the instructions on a
pesticide container before the
contents are used. It is the user's
responsibility to read the lable
and protect his family and his
operation from possible harm.
Don't scoff at poison ivy; if
you do, you may have to scratch
your vacation. Doctors say, eight
out of 10 persons are susceptible.
So you would do well to
contemplate what you, the
potential victim, can do to
protect yourself from the itch,
and what you can do to soothe
your misery if you become a
victim.
The first rule of protection is
to know your enemy by sight.
True, poison ivy has enough
disguises to keep even an expert
botanist busy, but it still has three
leaves to a group, although the
leaves vary in shape and size. The
miserable ivy has a way of
growing as a ground creeper, a
vine and even as a bush, so it's
best to avoid any three-leaf plant
if you can.
While poison ivy's appearance
may not be exact, its capabilities
are. Even though you've never
had poison ivy, and think you are
immune, it is not very likely that
you are. And authorities say
those few persons having natural
immunity can lose it. Repeated
exposures don't build resistance;
on the contrary, they may make
you more vulnerable.
You've probably heard some
people say they're so susceptible
to poison ivy that they can get it
just by looking at the plant. The
truth is, you cannot get poison
ivy that way. But you can be
affected even though there's no
direct contact with the plant. It's
the oily substance — urushiol —
on the leaves that's the real
villain. For example, the oil can
soak into gardening gloves or
outdoor clothes and infect you
months later if contact is made.
• If you suspect a case of poison
ivy is in store for you, first thing is
to wash the exposed area with
soap and warm water. This may
help rid the skin of the oil before
it gets to work. But if this fails,
and you develop the exasperating
and painful itch, a good way to
soothe it is to use an
analgesic-anesthetic preparation,
such as Rhulihist, which provides
instant relief. Rhulihist also acts
to alleviate itching and burning
sensations, discomfort from
nonpoisonous insect bites and
other minor skin irritations.
The obvious way to deal with
poison ivy is to avoid it. And that
means more than simply steering
clear of three-leaf vines and
plants.

Don't, for example, burn
poison ivy with other garden
debris. The poisonous oil
vaporizes when burned and
retains its potency in the smoke
wafting through the
neighborhood. And when

clinging to the logs.
If you recognize poison ivy on

don't try weeding it out by hand;
you're likely to leave the roots
