Playground
program set
Everything is in readiness for Monday's opening of
the playground program for youngsters in Exeter and
district.
Recreation director Alvin Willert and his staff of
four capable supervisors spent last week at the Lake
Huron Zone leadership training camp in Goderich and
undoubtedly came home with many new ideas of games
and crafts to keep area boys and girls happily engaged for
the summer.
The program starts Monday morning with
registration getting underway at 9:30 at Victoria and
Community Parks and will continue until Friday, August
14.
Each week will have a special theme. The first week
will be designated as Get Acquainted week and games will
be played to get the youngsters to know each other.
The second week will stress safety and will possibly
include a bicycle rodeo. For practical demonstrations it is
hoped the services of a police officer and a nurse can be
obtained for a couple of hours. Also included would be
instruction on water, safety.
The highlight of week three will be the annual Lake
Huron Zone Play Day at the local park when boys and
girls from many centres in Western Ontario will be
comp eting for district honors in various events.
The fourth week the emphasis will be on cowboys
and Indians and a favorite of most of the kids, a wiener
and beans supper will also be held.
The same week a camp-out will be staged for the
older boys and girls. The week will close with a parade and
judging of the various cowboy and Indian costumes.
The popular summer playground program will
really get off the ground and into orbit during the fifth
week.
The supervisors Joanne Burke, Lynne Farquhar,
Michelle Harrison and Gwen Mills will be coming up with
some far out ideas for space week.
The sixth and final week will put the spotlight on
gypsies and hobos and will conclude with a Penny
Carnival,
All youngsters from kindergarten age to at least
fourteen are urged to participate, Although the
registration fee has risen to two dollars this is a very small
charge that amounts to less than seven cents per day.
Willert has asked us to point out that boys and girls
must be registered in the program to take part in the
camp -outs.
The program will go from 9:30 to 11:30 each
morning and every afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30, Monday
to Friday.
At the same time, Willert said the wading pool at
Victoria Park would be open each afternoon during the
week from two until four.
Despite earlier reports that the pool may not be
allowed to open Huron's Medical Officer of Health, Dr.
G. P. A. Evans has given his permission.
Numerous daily checks will be taken on the water
and chlorine will be added when necessary.
Bucking Baseball
Action on all fronts is promised next Wednesday
night at Exeter's Community Park when the Exeter
Legion and Kinsmen softball teams meet.
Before anyone says they can watch an ordinary ball
game any time, we better hasten to add some additional
facts that the two clubs will be playing a slightly different
variety of softball.
The game will be softball but the players will be
using their energy in different ways to get around the
bases and chase the ball around the park.
You've guessed it. It's donkey baseball and Bud
Smith Enterprises of Stouffville will be bringing in eleven
donkeys of various temperaments to test not only the
strength but patience of the local ball players.
The pitcher and catcher are the only two players on
the defending team not required to be perched on a
four-legged animal. •
The batter has his donkey close at hand at the plate
ready to go (?) when he hits the ball.
Pre-game publicity forwarded by Bud Smith claims
that donkey baseball is more difficult than playing the
piano with mittens on or eating corn on the cob through a
picket fence.
It also adds that donkey baseball requires the ball
playing ability of Mickey Mantle, the horsemanship of a
rodeo performer, the vocabulary of a Missouri mule
skinner and Bob Hope's sense of humour, all rolled into
one.
Don't forget Wednesday night, July 8 at Exeter
Community Park at 7:30 for a hilarious night of softball
action.
Help, Please
We would like to ask the co-operation of all the
persons in the area that keep score in the various baseball
and softball score books that are turned into this office.
Most of the scorers do a good job, but we are
getting a couple that list only squares for runs and x'es for
outs without any explanation as to how the out was made
or how the player reached the bases.
There are about a dozen teams that are turning in
scores to us for reporting and it would make the job a lot
easier and a lot quicker if we knew exactly what they
meant. In some cases it means a phone call to find out
some of the information.
Exhibition Game
Baseball fans in the Dashwood area are in for a
special treat Saturday night when the Stratford juniors
come in for an exhibition game.
Of special interest will be the appearance of Bob
Webb in a Stratford uniform. Webb, was one of the top
performers in the Dashwood Tigers line-up the last two
seasons when they won the OBA Intermediate "D"
championship.
It is expected Webb will see some action on the
mound for Stratford against his team-mates of the last
couple of years.

EARLY START
The Dashwood club scored
two runs in the bottom half of the
first inning and were never
headed in posting the 8-4 win
over Mitchell, Sunday night.
Mitchell scored one run in
each of the first, third, seventh
and eighth innings but any
further rallies were snuffed out
by good clutch pitching by
Dashwood hurlers Dave Ratz and
Robbie Wein.
Two walks, a Mitchell error
and Bill S,chade's single produced
the first inning Tiger markers. Jim
Fuller's double and Don Vipond's
single sent the first Mitchell run
home.
The Tigers' ability to come
through with base hits with two
out paid off in the secondwhen
they scored four times. After the

Pete Ravelle slammed out a long
triple and Bill Schade collected
his second straight single and four

run of the game in the third inning.
Dashwood was back on the
scoreboard in the fourth with
Bob Hoffman crossing the plate
without the aid of a hit.
Each team scored once in the
seventh inning. Vipond singled
and scored the Mitchell run while
John Hayter's single chased Pete
Ravelle across for Dashwood.
First baseman Allan Clemo's
double sent Charlie Robertson

nights during the past week, six of
the regular scheduled games in
the Exeter and district Rec
softball league were played,

Hotel upped their winning streak
to four games with a 12.3 win

Grand Bend seventh with a single,
moved up on a similar hit by Gord
Vincent and scored on a Kinsmen
error.
The other five Grand Bend
runs came in the fourth frame
wiping out a 2-0 Kinsmen lead:
Three consecutive walks to
Larry Lovie, Greg Hamilton and
Gord Vincent set the stage for
Doug Courtney's single. A couple
of Kinsmen errors and singles
from the bats of Stan Lovie and
Bill Bowden completed the Bend
scoring.
The Kinsmen scored once in
the first inning on a walk to Gary
Spencer and Jim Russell's triple.
Singles by Russell, Ron Anderson
and Bob Coleman produced the
second Kin run in the fourth.
After Grand Bend took the
lead in the fourth, the Kinsmen
bounced back with two runs in
their next turn at the plate. Bob
Callingham walked to start the
rally, moved up on Gary
Spencer's single, Both runners
came around to score on Jim
Russell's third hit of the night,
this time a single.
In the sixth Walt Tiedeman
doubled and scored ahead of
singles by Bob Coleman and Jack
Glover to score the fifth and final
Kinsmen marker.
Kyle Harrison and Doug
Courtney shared the pitching win
for Grand Bend while John Cross
took the loss for the Kin club.
TWO BIG INNINGS
The Hawks scored five times in
the first inning and really broke
loose in the fifth, scoring nine
runs on the way to their 16-7 win
over the Kinsmen.
Doubles by Barry Baynham,
Pete Lawson and Al MacLean
along with a single from Pete
Revington were responsible for
the first four Hawk scores.
Pitcher Greg Revington's
home run was the big blow of the
nine run outburst in the fifth.
Paul Mason singled and tripled
during the rally and other one
base knocks were delivered by
Barry Baynham, Bill Bourne and
Al MacLean.
Singles by Greg Revington and
MacLean scored one Hawk run in
the third and Barry Baynham
scored the other run in the
fourth.
The Kinsmen scored twice in
the second stanza. After twowere

the third. In the sixth, the
Kinsmen scored three times as the
result of three consecutive walks
and a single by Ron Anderson.
The final run for the losers was
scored in the seventh when Jim
Russell's single sent Jack Glover,
the BP's in the top of the eighth.
They threatened again in the
ninth with a couple of hits •but,
reliever Robbie Wein was able to
gain two strike-outs in shutting

WINS OWN GAME
Pitcher Bryan Hogg won his
own game Thursday 'night by
singling in the seventh inning to
give Custom Trailers a 5.4

Industries. With one out in the
bottom of the seventh and
Duncan on second as the result of
a double, Hogg stroked his single

The other four Custom runs

with two markers in the top of
the seventh.
