wins jitney
The two weekly jitneys at the
Exeter lawn bowling club
produced plenty of keen, close
competition with a newcomer
walking off with the top prize,
Tuesday night.
Cam Chapman of Grand Bend
who picked up his bowling
know-how in recent winter trips
to Florida scored two wins with a
plus of 13 and aggregate of 32 to
take the top award.
Close behind with the same
number of wins and plus but with
a lower aggregate of 30 was
Clarence Down. Mrs. Chapman
placed third with a plus of 12 and
aggregate of 26 to go with a
double win. Howard Ince finished
fourth.
Saturday night's winner was
Alvin Pym with two wins, a plus
of 18 and aggregate of 30. Placing
second with the same aggregate
but a plus of 12 was Gertrude
Hamilton while Gordon
Hoggarth's one win, plus of 10
and aggregate of 18 was good for
third place.

Dashwood Industries scored
four times in the sixth inning to
edge the Kinsmen 10.8.
Four walks and Don Cooper's
bases clearing double produced
the winning Dashwood runs in
the sixth.
Each team scored twice in the
first inning. Dale Skinner, Cooper
and Dave Elston singled for the
Dashwood runs in the first while
Craig Davidson's single, a double
by Bob Whiteford and Jack
Glover's triple sent the Kinsmen
runners home.
The Kinsmen moved ahead
with three runs in the second.
Bob Whiteford's home run over
the Huron Park fence sent Jack
Glover and Bob Callingham home
ahead of him.
Dashwood came right back
with a pair of runs as the result of
five walks without the aid of a hit.
Again in the third, Carl Butson
doubled home two Dashwood
runs while Davidson, Brian
Baynham and John Cross singled
across two Kinsmen scores.
Bob Whiteford slammed his
second homer of the night in the
sixth to complete the Kinsmen
scoring and set the stage for the
late Dashwood rally.
Jack Bennett's double and
Jerry Livingstone's single sent the
winning Legion run across the
plate in the seventh for their 8-7
win over Dashwood Industries.
The Legion moved in front
quickly scoring seven runs in the
first three innings. Four walks
sent the first run home in the first
while singles by Jim Pinder, Gerry
Finnen and Ron Bogart produced
three runs in the second.
In the third, Cy Blommaert's
triple chased Keith Lovell, Dean
McKnight and Livingstone home.
Dashwood's first three runs
came in the third as the result of
Gerry Parson's homer with Brian
Hosker and Frank Boyle aboard.
Each had singled.
In the fifth, Parsons tripled
and singles were produced by
Doug McArthur and Don Cooper
for two more Dashwood scores.
Four consecutive singles
delivered by Don Campbell, Dale
Skinner, Frank Boyle and Doug
McArthur sent the final two
Dashwood runs across the plate.

Consider
the
Nonsmoker
Eating a hamburger enveloped
in somebody else's cloud of
cigarette smoke is no fun for
anyone.
A little consideration for the
nonsmoker is a trend starting to
take shape. Smokers are getting
the message that their smoke
pollutes the atmosphere of those
around them. Especially in
crowded places.
The social pressure on smokers
is building fast. Some airlines are
sensing the trend and flying with
it. Action on Smoking and Health
(ASH) has filed petitions with
appropriate government agencies
to require airlines to establish
no-smoking areas in planes. John
Banzhaf, the prime mover at
ASH, also plans to push for curbs
on smoking in restaurants,
meeting rooms and elevators, plus
enforcement of violated
no-smoking rules in sections of
trains.
One tactic Banzhaf may
encourage is lawsuits on behalf of
persons claiming their privacy or
health is affected by smoke.
National legislation to restrict
smoking aboard public
transportation has already been
introduced. Similar proposals are
pending in some state legislatures.
Mid three professional hockey
teams have even banned smoking
during games of their home rinks.
The District of Columbia Medical
Society has asked its 3,000
members to ban smoking in-their
offices.
This month Christmas Seal
associations across the country
are making a united effort to urge
smokers to kick the habit.
Kicking the habit is the ultimate
expression of consideration for
the nonsmokers. And for the
smoker's own lungs and health.
If you still smoke, ask your
local Christmas Seal association
for two leaflets, ME QUIT
SMOKING, WHY?and ME QUIT
SMOKING, HOW. Get in touch
