The London Hunt and Country club will be the capital of the golf world next week when the Canadian Open, in business sine 1904 will be played there for the first time . The plush London course located on Oxford Street west will host the fourth oldest golf championship in the world from July 2 to 5. In addition to the thousands who will line the fairways to watch the game's greatest match strokes over the 18-hole layout, millions will be glued to their television sets viewing their favorites in action. The Canadian Open brings a wealth of tradition to London. It brings together representatives from a dozen different countries all vying for fame and fortune over one of the most challenging courses in North America. Come sundown on July 5, the Seagram Gold Cup, emblematic of Canada's golf supremacy goes to the winner plus a cheque of $25,000. A total of $125,000 in prize money will be distributed, mainly to the top 50 competitors. Thursday morning July 2, 144 golfers will start with the field being reduced to the low 70 players and those tied for 70th place after two rounds of play Friday night. Tommy Aaron whose playoff victory over Sam Snead last summer marked his first tour triumph, will be putting his title on the line. and being a Canadian, Open champion has meant a great deal to Aaron. "It's given me a new lease on life. Winning a national championship of the stature of the Canadian Open has opened doors for me everywhere I go in the world," the tall Georgian stated recently when he confirmed his entry for the London event. "I know now what it means in prestige to be a Canadian titleholder and I'm grateful for what it has done for my career," he added. There's no doubt that in Canada the Open which is held under the auspices of the Royal Canadian Golf Association has become a national sports classic. Outside of Canada, it has been regarded as "one of the most prestigeous golf events in the world, a tremendous sports spectacle of which Canada should be extremely proud", according to Jack Tuthill, tournament director of the American tour involving 43 events in the United States. Special recognition was given to Canada's blue-ribbon golf championship recently when it was included in the coveted World Series of Golf format along with such noted events as the Masters, United States and British Opens and the P.G.A. championship. And in the Canadian Open's first exposure in this elite circle, its titleholder, Gene Littler, emerged the World Series winner three years ago. At least six former Canadian Open champions will be among the 144 golfers that tee off Thursday morning, July 2. Along with Aaron will be Don Massengale, 1966; Gene Littler, 1965; Art Wall, 1960, Doug Sanders, 1956 and three time champion Sam Snead, 1938, 1940, 1941. Preparations are also going ahead for the Pro-Amateur Celebrity tournament to be played on the London course on Dominion Day, July 1st. Already signed for the 18-hole, $5,000 tourney are more than thirty of the outstanding pros from the U.S. golf tour including Aaron, Snead, Massengale, Wall, George Archer and Canadians Al Balding and George Knudson. Sports and show business stars will be on hand for the special event along with the top pro and amateur golfers. Representing professional sports will be Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe and Russ Jackson. Entertainment stars will include comedian-band leader Phil Harris and Canadian comic Frank Shuster. Something new has been added for the Celebrity Day on the holiday. Organizers of the Open announced last week that a special children's price of $2 would be in effect for Wednesday. "Canada Day will also be family day at the Open," said Donald Swift, general chairman of the London Hunt Canadian Open committee. The all-day price of $2 for children aged 12 years and under was set to give families a chance to spend the July first holiday together, watching the stars," said Mr. Swift. "By making Canada Day family day, we believe we are adding a first to the Canadian Open," said Mr. Swift. "We hope that a lot of families looking for something extra special to do on the national holiday will take advantage of the $2 children's price." The regular price for a ticket to the Hunt Club grounds on July 1 is $6.
