By To be signed by Swimming Instructor Dashwood midgets score runs at will The Dashwood midgets went on a scoring spree in their first start in Western Ontario Athletic Association play. The Dashwood youngsters trounced Goderich 22-3 as they slammed out 13 hits and took advantage of eight Goderich miscues and 14 bases on balls. Jim "Vic" Guenther started on the mound for the winners and went sevep innings striking out six and 'walking four. Brian Bestard finished up and fanned five while giving up three free passes. Rec league ball action starts with plenty of runs scored With the steady increase of persons of all ages in the area taking up the game of golf, the number of holes-in-one being chalked up is also on the rise. Sunday was a good day for the fellows looking forward to that exciting moment when their tee shot goes all the way to the green and rolls into cup. At the Ausable golf course, Ontario Provincial Police Constable John Wright scored his ace on the 135-yard fourth hole. This was the second time Wright was able to fulfill what is for some a dream that comes only once in a lifetime. About seven years ago he fired his first hole-in-one at Kingsville. Playing with Wright on Sunday were Jim Russell and Gerry Smith. Also, Sunday, Doug Jennison of Grand Bend, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Lee Jennison scored a hole-in-one on the 17th hole at the Oakwood Inn golf course. Completing the foursome with Doug were Pete Thayer, Jim Cutting and Dwight Jennison. When talking of these successful holes-in-one, some people tend to put some of the accomplishments off to "just plain luck." We agree with this that luck has a part in it, but in most instances one has to make his own luck. At Tuesday's athletic banquet at South Huron District High School, guest speaker Nobbie Wirkowski gave his definition of luck. Wirkowski, now head football coach at York University in Toronto and the quarterback with the Toronto Argonauts when they last won the Grey Cup in 1952 said "luck is being prepared for an opportunity." We would like to thank Ron Bogart and his physical education staff at South Huron for the invitation to attend their year-end sports banquet. All the athletes at the school were honored and we will have numerous pictures in next week's issue. A few weeks ago we said we thought the banquet circuit was just about completed, This was a long way from the truth. Besides the school banquet we were privileged to be in Lucan Saturday night when the Lucan-Ilderton Jets were honored by the village of Lucan and the township of London. In attendance Saturday was Terry Crisp of the St. Louis Blues of the National hockey league. We didn't have much chance to talk to Terry but were able to ask him his opinion of the new St. Louis coach Al Arbour. Terry said he thought Arbour would make an excellent coach. "He is a good man on hockey fundamentals and is well liked both on and off the ice," added Crisp. Crisp is a brother-in-law of Barry Hearn of the Jets and a nephew of Lucan Reeve Ivan Hearn who is also a member of the Jets executive. New-Park Facilities In its latest communique, the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests reports on recent improvements made to provincial parks in the Lake Erie Forest District. At the Pinery Park, a new maintenance building, comfort station, picnic shelter and an addition to the existing Post Office have been made. At the same time, four miles of roads have been constructed along with one mile of hydro line and improvements to the water system. Add to this electric hand dryers in the washrooms. Ipperwash Provincial Park now has parking for approximately 1,000 cars, two additional change houses, concrete parking barriers (which will replace wooden ones), electric hand dryers in the washrooms and a new store. Nature Trailers We found the following article in the latest press release from the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests and believe it will interest most fishermen and probably their wives. Somewhere, lurking in a musty and cobwebby corner of the mind of every angler is that desire to catch a "wall fish," a trophy lunker that's just a little smarter, a little meaner, and a whole heap bigger than anything anybody else has ever caught. There again is where that element of chance comes in. We can kid ourselves (and we do) by bragging about our skill and experience, and it's true that a certain amount of technique and discernment is required. It also helps to have been endowed with an ample supply of dumb luck. Catching a big fish requires a combination of circumstances so haphazard that only fate could really assemble them . . . casting just the right bait in just the right place at just the right time to just catch the fish that happens to have a peculiar and insatiable craving for your prickly, blah-tasting titbit. Sure, exposure helps. The more you fish, the more you increase your chances of doing all those " i t" things. Some folks never quite make it though." SECOND HOLE-IN-ONE — Scoring a hole-in-one is becoming a habit for OPP Constable John Wright. Sunday on the Ausable golf course's fourth hole Wright's tee shot went the full 135 yards right into the cup, He is shown above re-eriacting the scene on the green with Jim Russell. The other member of the threesome was Gerry Smith. T-A photo The annual track and field meet at Exeter public school was held Friday and Monday with close competitions in all classes and a tie existed for one individual championship.
