FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS •

This year should see more youngsters than ever in
this district have the opportunity to participate in various
sporting activities, especially in softball.
Creation of several new leagues within the last year
or two is opening the door for new teams.
The Usborne Township bantam softball league will
be operating for the second year with boys and girls
divisions. Teams are entered again from Whalen, Thames
Road, Hurondale and Elimville.
Minor teams at Mount Carmel have been
organized and are competing in squirt, pee wee and
bantam divisions of the Lamb ton-Middlesex softball
league along with a couple of entries from Grand Bend.
The softball diamonds at Exeter Community Park
are a beehive of activity every night after school with
hundreds of boys and girls competing in the local house
league programs.
In the Western Ontario Athletic Association minor
baseball ranks pee wee teams will be fielded by Crediton,
Dashwood and Huron Park.
Crediton also will have a bantam club while
Dashwood and Huron Park will be in the midget division.
At Crediton, Lorne Preszcator is coaching the pee
wee club with Jim Finkbeiner in charge of the bantams,
George Tieman will handle the Dashwood pee wees while
Ron Merner is coachingthe midgets.
More youngsters than ever are expected to take
advantage of the facilities at the Exeter swimming pool. A
heating system is being installed to help warm the water to
proper swimming temperatures when the weatherman
fails to co-operate.
Rec Loop Meets
Any softball teams in the district wishing to enter
the Exeter and district Recreation softball league are
asked to attend a meeting tonight, Thursday at the Exeter
town hall.
Early this week recreation director Alvin Willert
reported he was expecting at least five entries.
Teams are expected to be entered by the Exeter
Legion, Exeter Kinsmen, Huron Park, Grand Bend and
Dashwood Industries.
Teachers Tee Off
All public and secondary school teachers in the
counties of Huron and Perth have the opportunity to
participate in two golf tournaments being arranged for
this summer.
The first will be held at the Mitchell golf club on
Saturday, June 13 and the second at the Oakwood club at
Grand Bend later in the fall.
Anyone wishing further information on the two
outings should contact the organizer, John McCarroll at
the Huron-Perth separate school board office in Seaforth.
Can't Come Too Soon
While summer holidays usually don't seem to last
long enough and time really flies during the warm weather
a lot of people in Michigan and Detroit in particular are
looking forward to July 1.
No, they are not really anxious to celebrate
Dominion Day with their friends on this side of the border
but are waiting for Denny McLain to return to the roster
..of the Detroit Tigers.
McLain, who was suspended for the first half of the
season by major league baseball commissioner Bowie
Kuhn for his involvement in Detroit gambling is
expected to give the Tigers the zip they have lacked in
recent weeks.
It was thought that if the Tigers could play .500 ball
until McLain returned he could make enough difference
to perhaps win the pennant.
This was of course going on the assumption that the
Baltimore Orioles would not be as hot as they were last
year and that McLain's layoff had not affected his
pitching in any way.
Throughout most of April the Tigers were more than
just keeping their noses above water. They were
challenging the Orioles for the lead and were actually in
first place for about a week.
Everything seemed to be going great for Mayo
Smith's Bengals. Mickey Lolich got off to a terrific start
and newcomer Joe Niekro came in and took over for
McLain winning his first three starts.
Then the roof started to sag and all of a sudden it fell
in and it took Tuesday night's 3-0 victory over the New
York Yankees to put the Tigers on an even basis of twenty
wins and the same number of losses.
The Tigers are now well back in third place, nine
games behind the Orioles who show no signs of slowing
down after their tremendous performance of last year.
The New York Yankees who are now starting to
show the results of their rebuilding program which was
inaugurated five seasons ago are in second place ahead of
the Detroiters.
The two Canadian pitchers on the Tiger staff are
getting lots of work and are certainly carrying their share
of the load. John Hiller of Scarborough has been seeing
plenty of relief action in addition to an occasional starting
assignment. The other young Canuck is Mike Kilkenny of
Bradford, near Barrie.
Banquets Over
The banquet season is just about over and this may
give our waist-line a chance to get back to proper
proportions. We would like to say a sincere thanle-you to
every group and leaguein the districtwhose banquets we
attended.
'These include the men's, ladies, mixed and minor
bowling leagues in Exeter along with the Junior hockey
Hawks,, Grand tend minor hockey, Lucan Lions And
Lucan Legion minor hockey and the Lucan-Ilderton Jets.
Saturday we should have attended three banquets
At the same time, but this is an impossibility even for a
fellow with a terrific appetite. While we attended the
Lucan-lIdertori Jets affair in St. Marys, editor Bill took in
the Men's bowling banquet here and Sid Daley, the
friendly OPP Sergeant in Lticari took care of the picture
taking at the ,Lucan Legion minor hockey banquet.
