Branches in Ontario, last year,
spent $39,652.00 sponsoring
5657 youths in Scouts, Cubs and
Cadets. Just another reason why
you should seriously consider
joining the Active Set, the Royal
Canadian Legion. Have you paid
your 1970 dues yet?
Don't forget June 6 is when
we entertain the "Old Sweat" at
Branch 540. Make it a date, to
make it a day to be remembered.
And that's 30 for this week.
Remember Capital Punishment
is when the government taxes
you to get capital so that it can
go into business in competition
with you, and then taxes the
profits on your business in order
to pay its losses.
into the ranks of Branch 540 in
the persons of Comrades Harvey
Hillman, M. Brayman and Ray
Hayter. It is our hope that their
association with Legion will be a
long and active experience.

"Boy, was that close!"
Comrades, in most sports
"close" doesn't count. But
here's one where it does. Branch
540 will co-host a Horseshoe
Tournament along with the
London Horseshoe Association.
This will be an open tournament
and will be held in Lucan on
June 14, 1970 commencing at
1 : 0 0 p .m . However,
qualifications will be held prior
to 1:00 p.m. Everyone is
welcome. If you are interested,
for further information, please
get in touch with Comrade Gord
Elson, Branch 540 Sports
Officer.

Only another week to wait,
Dad. Remember the date you
have with your son at the Legion
for the Father and Son Banquet.
May 23! Keep it open now!

A word to the wise — If your
child rides a bicycle, make sure
it is always in safe mechanical
condition, and is ridden
according to the rules.
Remember, a bicycle is a vehicle,
not a toy.

Did you know that Legion
Branch 540's coaches and
managers of the Lucan
Shamrock Hockey League
banquet was a huge success. Paul
Roach, chief scout for the
Buffalo Sabers, one of the new
expansion teams, was the guest
speaker. The Comrades of
Branch 540 take this
opportunity to say Thank You,
Coaches and Managers, for
difficult job well done. It is only
through the dedication of people
like you that our Lucan and
Area children get the
opportunity to play in properly
supervised sport. Thanks again.

Monday, May 18, at dusk, is
the big day in Lucan for this is
Legion-Lions Fireworks display
night. I was talking to some of
the officials in charge of the
display and have been assured no
expense has been spared to make
this the "best yet". Remember
the show goes on, rain or shine.
Make it a date to be present.

I am not having too much
success in obtaining material to
compile the Branch 540 History
Scrapbook. If we don't get some
response pretty soon, I guess we
will have to shelve the idea. Too
bad, though, Branch 540 has an
interesting background which
should be perpetuated.

By MRS. J.
Sunday at the Holy
Communion Service, Rev. R. A.
Carson preached on the theme
"What Mothers Want Most."
l first, said Mr. Carson, a
mother wants a husband who is
still courting her, who is a whole
husband, not half hearted,
Secondly, a mother wants a
home that is a good place to live.
and thirdly, a mother wants her
children to have good training,
Expanding these points Rev,
Carson quoted the Book of
Proverbs, "She openeth her
mouth with wisdom." He said
children expect this of their
Mothers. They don't want the
`Mother — knows best' type of
authority.
Also in Proverbs it says: "the
law of kindness is in her
tongue." The mouth is for
healing, not blistering, Mr.
Carson said.
He concluded by quoting
from Philippians 4:8 which tells
u8 to look for the best in each
other. The Christian principle of
"growing in grace Means growing
in graciousness, Whether parent
or child, husband or wife, the
individual looks to others with
wistful longing and the
unspoken plea. "please see the
best in me, Faults I know I have,
but please see the good."
Whit Sunday is also
Commonwealth Sunday. It is a
time to remember the
foundation of the Church and to
H. PATON
pray for the unification of the
Christian Church. Morning
Prayer and Sunday School will
be held in St. James Anglican
Church at 9:45 a.m. This is the
first, at the summer hour of
service.
June 28, July 5, and July 12
the Anglican Church will be
closed and the congregation will
attend the United Church. The
United Church will attend the
Anglican Church July 19, 26 and
August 2, 9, 16.
What's new?

Mother's Day address, and
performed the rites of baptism
for Jeffrey Bond, son of Mr. &
Mrs. Harry Bond, Jr., Blaine and
Tonya Butehart, children of Mr.
and Mrs. Evan Butchart.
You won't hear that question bandied
about too often in a Volkswagen showroom.
People have tome to think that a Volks-
wagen is a Volkswagen is a Volkswagen.
Which is a pity. Because over the past
3 years, we've mode over 75 improvements.
To the engine. Suspension, Interior.
Behind it all is our old fashioned notion
that it makes a lot more sense to work on the
FOLK MASS

Andrew the Apostle Roman

Mervin Carter,
way a car works every year, than to play
around with the way it looks.
So we devote our time to making parts
that were good, better; things that were near
perfect, perfect.
And that's the reason we don't Rove a
lot -of big, fantastic Changes to shout
about every year.
