T-A photo Local cyclist gets big win Tony Shepherd of Exeter drove his '69 Triumph Bonneville to a first place finish in the open production motorcycle race at the Ivlosport race course, Sunday afternoon. Tony, a native of England who has been living in Exeter for more than a year started from the tenth post position and had moved into the lead by tyre end of the fifth lap. The race covered 15 laps at two and a half miles each and Tony was able to manage each circuit two minutes and fifteen seconds averaging about 69 miles per hour. This was his first start in this type of competition- Times-Advocate, May 14, 1970 FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS By Ross Haugh Banquets aplenty Our column was missing from these pages for the first time in several years last week as we spent four days confined to bed in South Huron hospital. Our biggest disappointment was in missing a couple of banquets that are the order of the week, especially in the sport of bowling right at the moment. In hospital we were forced to go with a strictly liquid diet for a couple of days and that's tough for a fellow that likes to tie into good solid food. Our loss on the banquet trail was a gain for editor Bill who pinch-hit for us in a couple of banquet appearances. Sunday was a memorable day for hockey fans in Boston. The Bruins' Stanley Cup win ended a famine that reached 29 years. Despite many heroes on the Boston club, the happiest man associated with the club should be Milt Schmidt. The amiable Schmidt, now general manager of the Bruins was one of the top performers with the last Boston championship team back in 1941. Schmidt combined with Porky Dumart and the late Bobby Bauer to produce a lot of the Boston goals as the famous Kraut line. The Bruins should continue to dominate the National hockey league scene for quite a few seasons yet in a similar fashion to that held for many years by the Montreal Canadiens. We wouldn't imagine that coach Harry Sinden will lose any player by way of retirement for next year and trades by a pennant winner are usually pretty scarce. The winning goal fired by Bobby Orr was a fitting climax to probably the best played and most exciting game of the final series. On will need a truck to take all of his trophies back to Parry Sound for the summer. Incidentally, it was about ten years ago right now that Orr was corralled by the Boston club at the age of 12. Times have certainly changed since then. At the moment a junior hockey player cannot be signed by a pro club until he is twenty years of age. While still on the subject of hockey we were very much impressed at the annual Shamrock minor hockey league banquet in Lucan Saturday night by guest speaker Paul Roach. Paul who operates the Centralia summer hockey school and is chief university scout for the new Buffalo Sabre entry in the NHL handled all questions fired by an adult audience very well. He said the Buffalo club will be starting completely from scratch as far as hockey talent is concerned. At the moment the Sabres do not have any farm clubs. The American league Buffalo Bisons are owned by the New York Rangers. The Sabres will get first choice in the junior draft in June and are almost certain to select Giles Perrealut of the Montreal Canadiens, Memorial Cup champions. Roach said he expects Darryl Sittler of the London Knights will turn into a top notch pro performer. Sittler is thought to be about the fifth or sixth best junior player in Canada. The first junior draft choice cannot be sold or traded by his team during his first year in the National Hockey league. Hank carries on The way Hank Aaron, the veteran baseball performer of the Atlanta Braves started out the current season he will have his coveted 3,000th career hit in no time at all. Aaron walloped the 13th grand slam homer of his fabulous career in a 5-0 Braves' victory over the Houston Astros, April 10 and at the same time moved into 10th place, ahead of Sam Crawford, on the all-time hit parade. The homer was his 2,962 career base hit. Over this past weekend, Hank slammed his 13th round tripper of the current season. Aaron's latest grand stammer broke a tie with Ernie Banks of the Cubs and made him the leading active player in bases loaded homers with 13. Gil Hodges' 14 leads the National league while former Yankee hero Lou Gehrig's 23 heads the major league total. New Indians Any resemblance between the Cleveland Indians of 1970 and the team that opened the 1969 season is strictly coincidental. Of the 29 players and coaches who returned to Cleveland from spring training in Arizona, only nine players were wearing the Tribe uniforms a year ago. In addition to third base coach Johnny Lipon, the nine returnees are pitchers Sam McDowell, Steve Hargan and Mike Paul, catchers Duke Sims and Ray Fosse, infielders Tony Horton, Larry Brown and Vern Fuller and outfielder Chuck Hinton. New Cleveland coaches are Kerby Farrel, Cot Deal and Hoot Evers. They are replacing George Strickland, Jack Sanford and Luke Easter. The Indians have added a new attraction for their home games this year. They have a grounds-girl. She's high school senior Barbara Jordan who will be sweeping off the bases and the infielders' shoes after the infield is dragged in the fifth inning. Greys working out Practices for the Exeter Greys entry in the Huron Ladies' softball league started Tuesday night with a second workout slated for Exeter Community Park tonight, Thursday. Any girls from anywhere in the district wishing to try out with the team will be more than welcomed by coaches Jim Newby and Bryan Hogg. Bowlers Ready To Go The 1970 season of the Exeter lawn bowling club will officially open on Victoria Day afternoon with an open exhibition jitney. Club president Len McKnight extends a cordial invitation to any newcomers that would like to try their hand at bowling. Experienced bowlers will be happy to extend any coaching tips that may be necessary, McKnight adds that the game is ideal for any age from eight to eighty and their will be fun and prizes galore for Monday's opening day activities. Bowling will start at 2:15 with a pot luck supper following later in the afternoon.
