Detail losses
in area fires
Exeter's fire loss for last year
was up slightly from the
previous five year average. The
incidence of fires was 18 with a
loss of $3,843.00 in 1969
compared with the five year
average of 10 fires and monetary
loss of $3,692,00.
The Province of Ontario
recorded the lowest number of
fire deaths in nearly 20 years
according to the annual report
of the Fire Marshal for 1969.
While the incidence of fire
increased very little, there was a
rather sharp increase in the
monetary loss, reflecting the
present inflationary period,
The number of fires rose 2%
from 1968, while the number of
deaths from fire, at 169,
dropped from the previous
year's total of 225.
The year saw a substantial
increase in the number of fire
investigations and criminal
prosecutions. There were 256
convictions for fire crimes,
against 175 for the previous
year.
Two outstanding examples of
the expanding services of the
Office of the Fire Marshal during
the year were a 41% increase in
the number of municipal fire
protection surveys conducted,
with a corresponding increase in
the acceptance of
recommendations for
improvement.
The following is a Municipal
Fire Loss chart which compares
the year 1969 to the previous
five year average.
Biddulph Township had one
fire in 1969, a loss of
$11,000.00 compared to the
previous five year average of
three fires, and a loss of
$10,012.00; Grand Bend, four
fires, a loss of $19,951.00
compared to 5 fires and loss of
$4,538.00; Hensall, eight fires,
loss $766.00 compared to seven
fires, loss $2,625.00; Lucan, six
fires, loss $9,220.00 compared
to four fires, loss $3,043.00.
Parkhill, seven fires, loss
$636.00 compared to seven
fires, loss $1,478.00; Stephen
Township, 13 fires, loss
$81,505.00 compared to seven
fires, loss $25,988.00;
Tuckersmith Township, three
fires, loss $40,097.00 compared
to five fires, loss $25,922.00 and
Zurich had two fires with a loss
of $48.00 compared to the five
year average of two fires with a
loss of $547.00.
