The chore facing the
Wean-ilderton Jets remains the
same as it was a week ago but
they have less time in which to
complete their accomplishment.
After a weekend trip to
Napanee, the Jets find
themselves deadloeked with the
Napanee Comets at two games
apiece in the Ontario Hockey
Association Intermediate "E"
final,
Due to. a L-I loss of the toss
of the coin, the fifth game of the
best-of-seven series will be
played back in Napanee Friday
night at nine o'clock.
The sixth game is slated for
the Huron Park arena, Sunday
afternoon with starting time set
for two o'clock. If a seventh
game is necessary it wilt be back
Napanee, Friday, May 1, also
at nine o'clock.
In Napanee over the
weekend, the pattern set at
Huron Park a week earlier was
repeated with the Jets taking the
Saturday game and the Comets
bouncing back to take the
Sunday afternoon contest.
The Lucan-Ilderton boys
were victorious by a spore of 4-2
in the .first of the two recent
games while Napanee won by a
6-3 score in the 'Sunday contest.
Winning away from home is
not new to the Jets and they
must gain at least one victory in
Napanee if they wish to fulfill
their year-long ambition of
winning an Ontario crown.
In the current year playoff
competition, the 1.4 club has
gained half of their victories in
games played on foreign rinks.
PENALTIES GALORE
Sunday's game in Napanee,
won by the Comets by a score of
6.3 was marred by a rash of
penalties, especially in the third
period when the penalty box
was filled to capacity most of
the time.
After losing to the speedy
Jets, Saturday night, the Comets
changed their tactics for
Sunday's game and used "the
lumber" in order to slow down
the visitors.
RESTING BEFORE THE GAME — Before Sunday's game in Napanee some of the Lucan-Ilderton Jets
went for a stroll and posed for a picture on a rail fence. From the left, they are, Jamie Robb, Don
Henderson, Steve Proctor, Steve Storey, Ron Cauduro, Jack Nairn and Doug Galloway. T-A photo
IT WAS A BUSY SPOT — The penalty box was one of the busiest spots in the Napanee arena, Sunday
afternoon. The picture above was taken from the press box late in the third period with Doug Galloway

FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross. Haugh,
Poor
show
The current hockey season will soon be over and
it can't end too soon for us if we have to witness many
of the kind of games like the one played in Napanee
Sunday afternoon.
Before we carry any further we will report that
the Lucan-Ilderton Jets and Napanee Comets split the
two weekend games and the series is all tied up at two
games apiece.
Sunday's game won by Napanee by a score of 6-3
produced the weirdest brand of hockey we have ever
witnessed, While being a loyal Jet supporter this
statement is not "sour grapes" because of the
Lucan-I lderton loss.
After losing 4-2 to the high flying Jets Saturday
night in a fairly wide open game, the Napanee club came
out Sunday afternoon with 'mayhem' on their minds.
The amount of high sticking, spearing and
butt-ending was almost unbelievable. While the Comets
were caught for 18 penalties, mostly for highsticking, it
would have taken a referee with eyes back and front to
catch all the infractions.
The Durham Huskies who were in the local group
finals against the Jets are known to play hard, rough,
aggressive hockey but a Durham-Lucan game would be
classed as a "Sunday School picnic" compared to
Sunday afternoon's farce.
The fifth game of the series is slated for the
Napanee arena, Friday night at nine with the sixth
contest set for the Huron Park arena, Sunday afternoon
at two o'clock.
We hope the two clubs stick strictly to hockey in
the remaining games giving the fans a chance to see a
good brand of puck chasing.
While at the Saturday night game we were
introduced to Doug Alkenbrack who is the federal
member of parliament for Frontenac-Lennox-Addington
and a good friend of Huron MP Bob McKinley.
Records
Before Sunday's game at Napanee, one of the fans
showed us a program of the Greensboro Generals of the
Eastern league of 1966.
Present Lucan-Ilderton Jet playing coach Jack
Nairn was a member of the Greensboro club at that
time.
The book listed Nairn as holding the league
record for scoring the fastest two goals in history.
Jack scored at 9.14 and 9.22 of the second period
against Knoxville on December 29, 1963.
Another area hockeyist, Ron Muir of Seaforth
holds two records in the same league.
Muir scored three goals in six minutes and
nineteen seconds and also holds the mark for the fastest
goal, five seconds.
Fish Spawning
Before Saturday night's game at Napanee we were
told if we wanted to see something exciting we should
drop down to the Napanee River, Sunday morning.
Several different persons said there were
thousands of pickerel coming up the river near the
waterfall to spawn.
As can be expected when we arrived Sunday
morning the fish were missing by the same number of
thousands.
Shortly before noon along with Keith and Bobbie
Scarborough, Jack Nairn and Jim Bender we walked
along the bank and were able to see a dozen or so
pickerel.
During the past week, game wardens of the
Ontario Department of Lands and Forests have been
keeping an around-the-clock eye on the spawning.
Apparently each night around eight o'clock
department officials have been netting and tagging a
large number of pickerel.
The game warden, on duty Sunday morning told
us he tagged one pickerel last week that tipped the
scales at seventeen pounds.
We tried our best to have the game warden net us
a fish or two for picture purposes but after checking
with his superiors was unable to bend regulations.
He asked us to come back at eight o'clock Sunday
night when they would be tagging but by that time we
were heading home again.
Our last try at seeing more fish came right after
the Sunday game. While the players were dressing,
Nancy Scarborough drove us back to the river and again
we only saw a few pickerel.
The game warden estimated one fish we were able
to see at about ten pounds. Apparently spawning lasts
for about ten days and is coming to a close.
Coaching Clinic
We received a bulletin from the Western Ontario
Athletic Association this week concerning a baseball
coaches' clinic that is being held at the Goderich arena,
this Sunday at one o'clock in the afternoon.
There is no charge for the clinic and anyone is
welcome to attend.
Further to this, umpire clinics are also scheduled
in various other communities. New rules this year now
make it compulsory for umpires to attend if they wish
to be recommended for an OBA card, Actual dates of
the umpire clinics will be announced in further
bulletins.
Another split for Jets in OHA finals
to give his club a 2-0 lead.
Bob Dickson cut the Napanee
deficit to a single goal at 17,05
but defenceman Don Urbshott
got that one right back by
scoring on a low, hard drive
from the blue line. Dusty Aldis
and Dave Webster drew assists
on the play.
Nairn scored again near the
fourteen minute mark of the
second period to complete his
club's scoring for the night.
Doug Galloway started the play,
Only one goal came in the
third period and that was fired
by Dave Fox of Napanee before
six minutes had elapsed.
Referee Torn Brown of
Toronto called a total of
thirteen penalties with eight
going to the home club, Comets.
Included were fighting majors to
Bob Brown of the Comets and
Jacques Cousineau of
Lucan-Ilderton,

Sixth game at Huron Park, Sunday
Napanee goalie Dave Gavel, a
star in every game of the series
so far was at his best in the first
half of the opening period when
he repelled numerous Jet shots
that were headed for the scoring
mark.
Jim Stinson, the highest
flying Comet in Sunday's game
started his team off on the right
foot at the 6.14 mark of the
opening session completing a
three-way passing effort with
Brian Stinson and Bob Brown.
In the last three minutes of
the first frame, two more
successful passing combinations
involving three Comets put the
home team into a commanding
three goal lead.
Brian Stinson notched the
first of the two goals with
brother Jim and Rick Gerow
assisting while Jack Smith fired
the other shot past Wayne
Parkinson in the Lucan-Ilderton
net with Ron Vanalstine and
Earl Smith drawing assists.
Jim Stinson was back with his
second goal of the afternoon
early in the second period, again
on a three-way passing effort.
This time Brian Stinson and Jack
Brady provided the passing help.
Keith Scarborough took over
in goal for the Jets to start the
second period and finished the
game.
A bang-bang passing play at
9.43 of the second put the Jets
on the score sheet for the first
time. Dave Webster carried the
puck most of the way up the ice,
sent a pass over to Jim Bender
who in turn sent a quick pass in
front of the net and Jacques
Cousineau was johnny-on-
the-spot to flip the puck into the
Napanee net.
The second Lucan-Ilderton
goal came on a power play six
minutes later with Bob Brown
sitting out a cross checking
penalty.
Rick Bradford fired the shot
a low drive from the point, the
play was set up by Jamie Robb
and playing coach Jack Nairn.
Early in the third, Rick
Gerow, son of Napanee coach
Walt Gerow pretty well ensured
the win for his club by scoring
on a beautiful solo effort and a
hard whistling shot that eluded
Scarborough.
Jim Bender finalized the Jet
scoring at 7.46 of the third
period as he was put in front of
the net on a clearing pass from
Jamie Robb.
Bob Dickson notched the last
Napanee goal with less than two
minutes to go in the game.
During the rough contest, the
Comets drew eighteen penalties
with the Jets drawing down
thirteen. Included were fighting
majors to Don Urbshott and
Jamie Robb of the Jets and Bob
Brown and John Hartwick of the
Comets.
DOMINATE FIRST
In Saturday's game, the Jets
came out with the same style of
play as they did in the first game
of the series on home ice a week
earlier.
They dominated the first
period completely, taking a 3-1
lead to the dressing room for the
first rest session.
The first goal of the game
came from the stick of Jacques
Cousineau as he took a pass
from Jim Bender at 3.47 and
parked the puck behind Dave
Gavel in the Napanee net.
Numerous other scoring
chances were missed by the L-I
club in the early moments of
play. Jamie Robb hit the cross
bar just past the seventh minute
of play with Bob Brown of the
Comets serving the first of five
penalties he picked up during
the exciting sixty minutes of
action.
It took the Napanee club
more than ten minutes to get
their first shot on Jet goalie
Wayne Parkinson.
At 11.37 playing coach Jack
Nairn combined with line-mates
Steve Storey and Doug Galloway
