Many men stood at the foot
of the cross where hung the
lifeless body of a Galilean
carpenter and above whose head
was nailed a placard reading,
`King of the.Jews',
"King of the Jews? Ind-ed
not!" they scoffed,
They did believe that God,
who was the master and maker
of their history would send them
a Messiah, but he would arrive in
`clouds of glory' and would
bring them political restoration
and national sovereignty under a
Davidic king.
But this man, hanging above
them now had not come in a
cataclysmic opening of the
heavens. His followers, once a
Multitude, had fled and left him
to die alone. And had he not
been a friend of sinners and a
breaker of the words of the law?
And by allowing himself to be
called 'the Christ' hadn't he
mocked their ancient hope of a
Messiah?
Him, the Messiah?
Impossible.
But, at least, the meaning of
the words, `King of the Jews',
was unquestionably clear and
challenging to those men and
women on the slopes of a
windswept hill that spring
afternoon.
The issues of Easter are
foreign to contemporary man.
The words on the placard
over the head of the dying man
on the cross bring no cries of
denunciation, but neither do
they bring accolades of
affirmation. Manes reaction, for
the most part, is one of
indifference and unconcern.
In spite of their short
sightedness the people who
witnessed the crucifixion of
Jesus were closer to a genuine
affirmation of faith than many
modern men, even those who are
members of our churches. At
least, they believed with no
doubts, that God was active in
the history of their nation. -
Modern society, with its
scientific view of reality, leaves
little room for the view of a God
who acts in history. It is much
easier for us to translate the
word 'God' into terms like
`ultimate truth', 'the guiding
principles of creation', or the
basis of all matter'.
The greatest commandment
Jesus gave us was, "This I
command you, to love one
another as I have loved you."
Yet two thousand years later
a desperate cry for that love is
still heard from every corner of
the human sphere.
The recurrent theme of so
many of the successful novelists

and playwrights is loneliness and
separation.
Love is needed in our foreign
policies, our political arenas, in
the wheeling and dealing of the
business world, in the working
out international problems of
the Canadian Indian, the poor,
the mentally sick, yes, and it is
needed in our churches, too.
Young people are grasping
out for love and perhaps are
closer than most of us to
achieving some essence of what
Christ meant. You and I do not
always understand these young
ones with their placards of 'Love
In', 'Make Love, Not War', and
with their long unruly hair,
strange dress and stranger ways.
Perhaps these mannerisms are
just a means to show their
revulsion of our generation's
hypocrisy and the lack of love
we show toward each other. -
In the past, we may have
given lip service to God, but we
believed that we could carve out
our own salvation with the help
of education, and improve
society through progressively
better government. We also
believed that the evils of life
such as ignorance, crime,
poverty, selfishness, hatred and
greed could be cured by
reforming human institutions
and bettering environmental
conditions.
We believed further that with

EASTER EGG NESTS

every technological development
man rose to greater heights and,
would ultimately become
perfect.
But, regardless of the
immensity of our scientific gains
and technology advancement we
need only read the morning
paper with its stories of wars,
revolts, demonstrations, strikes
and murderous crimes to realize
that humanism has failed,
We have need of a greater
power than our own. This
power, yet untapped and untried
is love, and the focal point of
this power is Jesus Christ.
The men who stood by
watching on the hill of Golgotha
failed to recognize the new ethic
of loge that redeems man to God
and establishes friendships
between men. They were also
denied the vision of the empty
tomb and the glory of the
resurrection.
Contemporary man still fails
to recognize the great truth.
Only as the events of Easter
call us to seek out God who acts
in history, and only as we realize
that He shows his divine love for
us in the giving of His Son, and
gives us hope, joy and strength
through the Resurrection, can
we look at the Man on the Cross
and say, "This is indeed the King
of the Jews and of All
Mankind."

One fondue gourmet came close
to having his house burned to
the ground when a fondue crock
broke open while filled with
boiling oil that ignited when it
hit the open flame. The flames
flowed across the table, onto the
floor and ignited the drapes. So,
take heed: be sure to use only a
metal fondue pot and that the
type of fuel used will not
explode or flow. An alcohol
burner is implied in most
instructions, but this is not
spelled out. Also be careful
when removing the forks from
the pot, as there is the chance
that oil or cheese will flow down
the outside and ignite.

MAPLE SYRUP TIME
Nothing could be a surer sign of spring than maple syrup time. If
you get some fresh syrup this year (it's usually available at maple
syrup festivals, public markets or specialty shops) home economists,

storing it properly to retain the true maple flavor:
1. If you are buying maple
