Busy
week
The second largest crowd of
the season, 1,056 sat in on the
exciting action.
while Schell's score late in the
game with two Hawks resting in
the On .bin.
This week is probably the busiest one hockey
fans in this area will experience for a long, long
time.
In addition to the Exeter Hawks
participation in OHA Junior "D" playdowns, four
local an-star teams were taking part in tournaments
while the same ,number of house league teams were
in various centres taking part in similar tournaments
for boys that were not able to make the first teams
in their own town.
We know of several families that have boys
playing on at least three of these teams and the
parents were certainly busy trying to keep
everybody happy.
We saw many of the same people at
the Goderich tourney Saturday afternoon, the
local figure skating carnival at night and the junior
game in Zurich, Sunday night.
While getting off the subject of hockey for a
moment, we would like to say a hearty "thank
you" to everyone that was involved in the Exeter
Figure Skating Carnival, Saturday night,
President Barb Dougherty, all executive
members, professional Faye MacDonald and parents
should be proud of all the youngsters that were in
the production of "Music from the Movies".
It was a colorful and sometimes amusing
show that was enjoyed by all.
The Young Canada pee wee tournament in
Goderich continues to be one of the most popular
in the province.
Originated as a one-day event on April 1,
1950 with twelve teams competing it has grown to
an eight-day affair comprising 89 teams of boys
that were born on or after January 1, 1957.
For those planning to attend a few of the
games in Goderich later in the week we will pass on
a little information on the scheduling for this week.
Of local interest, Saturday will be the big day at
Goderich when two district teams will be battling for
the "D" championship.
The Grand Bend pee wees will be playing in the
semi-final round Saturday afternoon at three o'clock
and llderton goes in the other half at 4.15,
is qnite possible the two clubs could be meeting
in the finals slated for eight o'clock at night.
Friday night, the AA final will be played at 7,50
with the A championship going immediately afterwards.
The Exeter pee wees won their first game of the
tournament Saturday downing Acton by a score of 5-I
and then lost to Goderich 3-1.
with three goals. Pete Glover and
Larry Haugh were the Exeter
goal scorers in the first period
with Steve Murley assisting each
occasion.
In the second, Barry
Baynham upped the Exeter goal
total to three with. Joe O'Rourke
assisting at the twenty-one
second mark before John Loader
broke the goose egg for Zurich
only two minutes later on a play
started by Bill Stirling,
For the balance of the period
the Hawks again took over
scoring command and blinked
the light three times behind
Gary Geoffrey and Glenn
Gaschc, who shared the goal
tending duties for Zurich.
Steve Murley notched his first
two goals of the game with Ron
Lindenfield assisting on both
and Larry Haugh on one of the
counters,
The other goal was fired by
Haugh with Murley and
Baynham picking up assists on
the play.
Murley completed his hat
trick at 7.36 of the closing
stanza with Lindenfield again
assisting be fore Stirling
completed the Zurich game
scoring four minutes later.
The Hawks counted three
times in the last six minutes of
play to provide a good margin of
vic tory.
Larry Laye, Rick Schell and
Ron Lindenfield were the
marksmen on the last Hawk
counters.
The Exeter club again took
the bulk of the penalties, taking
14 of the 21 called.
The shorthandedness failed to
dampen their scoring spirits.
Murley's goal to lead off the first
period was accomplished with a
team-mate in the penalty box
Displaying their best scoring
efforts of the series in the last
two games, the Exeter Hawks
drubbed the Zurich Dominions
10-2 on Exeter ice, Friday night
and came right back with a
convincing 9.3 win at the Zurich
arena, Sunday night to take the
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" final in six games.
After dropping the opening
contest, the Dominions bounced
back to win twice before the
Hawks got into a three game
winning streak to wrap up the
series,
The final two Exeter wins
were managed with four regulars
on the sidelines due to injuries.
Randy Parsons broke a hand in
the fourth game of the series
while Ron Janke suffered a
broken nose in the opening
game. John Braid underwent an
appendectomy a few weeks ago
and Mike Hoy had a shoulder
separation repaired in hospital
recently,
The win over Zurich puts the
Hawks into the OHA semi-final
against Norwich. The first game
of a best-of-seven series was
played in Norwich, last night,
Wednesday with the second
scheduled for the Exeter arena,
Friday night at 8:30.
Norwich eliminated
Caledonia in seven games, with
three going into overtime.
CONGRATULATIONS FROM THE COACH — One of the
important factors in Exeter Hawks final win over the Zurich
Dominions Sunday was goalie John Hayter. The Dashwood
youngster is shown above after the game with his happy coach, Bob

Novice club winning
at Brampton tourney
The Exeter novice hockey
team has moved into the third
round of play at the annual
novice tournament being played
this week in Brampton.
In their first starts, Monday,
the local youngsters were forced
to score a 4-3 win over
Kincardine in overtime in the
second game of a total goals
series to advance to the next
round.
The first game with
Kincardine ended in a 3-3 tie.
Tuesday, the opposition for
the locals came from Delhi and
they bounced back with a
couple of good efforts to defeat
the tobacco area kids 9-2 and
5-3.
The Exeter novice boys
remained unbeaten in Shamrock
play as they downed Lambeth
7.1 in a sudden-death game to
decide first place in the league
standings and dumped
Stoneybrook 5.1 in the first
game of the playdowns.
In the win over Lambeth
Perry and Paul Pooley each
scored twice and single scores
were added by Brad Taylor,
Brian Clarke and Dave Bogart.
The Pooley's took care of all
of the scoring against
Stoneybrook. Perry notched
three goals while Paul came up
with a two goal performance, his
second coming on a penalty shot
in the third period.
OVERTIME WIN
It was Perry Pooley's
breakaway goal at 1.10 of the
sudden-death overtime period
that gave the Exeter youngsters
their 43 win over Kincardine in
the second game, Monday.
The teams each scored once
in the first period with Paul
Pooley notching the Exeter goal.
In the second and early in the
third Brian Clarke and Norm
McCauley found the scoring
mark to give Exeter a two goal
lead.

the third period sent the game
into overtime.
In the first game of the total
goals series, Perry Pooley scored
in the first period for Exeter and
twin brother Paul registered in
the second with Norm McCauley
scoring in the third period.

added by Lloyd Mathers, John
Mathers and Colin Brewer.
GOOD COMBINATION
Success for the Hawks in
Sun day.'s final game in Zurich
was a combination of potent
scoring power and an excellent
performance from goalie John
Hayter.
Down 5-1 after the first
period of play, the Dominions
came out flying in the second
period and Hayter was called on
to come up with numerous big
saves in order to maintain the
Hawks big edge.
The Hawks scored three times
in the first period before the
Zurich club was able to find the
scoring range.
Defenceman Joe O'Rourke
one of four Hawks that were
able to score two goals fired the
game opener at 8.44 with Steve
Murley and Pete Glover assisting.
Larry Haugh then found the
mark with two successful shots
in a space of thirty-three seconds
near the 15-minute mark before
John McKinley notched the first
Dominion counter.
Murley picked up the assist
on Haugh's first marker and the
other line-mate Ron Lindenfield
assisted on the second.
After McKinley's goal,
O'Rourke picked up his second
counter of the first session with
Barry Baynham and Larry Laye
assisting and Laye scored with
O'Rourke setting up the play.
Bill Stirling gave the Zurich
fans a bit of hope scoring at the
eight second mark of the middle

effort with Stu Mustard and
John Loader.
Pete Glover regained the four
goal lead for the Hawks with his
first tally of two at 5.43 with

game and Ron Lindenfield
found the scoring mark to
finalize the Exeter scoring.

Lambeth, Included in the
penalty total were last period
majors and a misconduct to
Barry Baynham of the Hawks
and Bruce Schoenals of Zurich
who engaged in fisticuffs.
The game was witnessed by a
standing room crowd of 1,152.
Exeter teams competed in
tournaments this week that were

In novice play the locals
blanked Wiarton 8-0 and were in
turn shut-out 5.0 by Owen

In the opening contest Randy

The Exeter goals against
Owen Sound were fired by

SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN
Against Delhi in the second
round, the Exeter club wasted
little time in showing their
supporters they meant business
by scoring four times in the first
period of the first game before
their opposition reached the
scoreboard.
The scoring was well spread
in the first period with Robbie
Heard, Brian Clarke, Brian
Horre11 and Perry Pooley
notching one goal each. In the
second session, Clarke and Perry
Pooley were back with their
second scores of the game.
The third period saw Perry
Pooley up his game goal
production to four with two
more goals and Robbie Heard
picked up his second.
Teams Thinning Out
With the spring season well on the way, the
number of hockey teams still in the hunt for Ontario
championships is being reduced considerably.
In this district we have two clubs still in the
running with good chances to bring home provincial
crowns.
The Exeter junior Hawks have moved into the
semi-final round of the OHA junior "D" ranks and are
this week meeting Norwich in a best-of-seven series.
In addition to Norwich and Exeter, teams from
Cannington, Madoc and Haliburton remain in
contention for junior honors.
The Hawks disposed of the Zurich Dominions in
six games with four of their regulars out of action due
to injuries. We would like to wish Bob Baynham, Bob
White and all the juniors the best of luck as they move
down the playoff trail.
The other team with a tremendous chance of
being crowned Ontario champs is the Lucan-Ilderton
Jets.
The Jets currently lead the Tillsonburg Appolos
three games to none in a best of seven semi-final series
and could move into the final with a win on Huron Park
ice, Friday night.
At the moment in other OHA Intermediate "B"
play, Elmvale leads Parry Sound two games to none
while Napanee and Whitby are battling in another
quarter final round.
The northern and eastern winners will meet in
another series to decide who will move on against the
southern winner in the Ontario final,
Our same wishes go out to Jack Nairn, Don
Urbshott and Steve Storey who guide the fortunes of
the Lucan-ilderton club.
HEARD HELPS
In the second half of the
series, the Exeter boys won 5-3
to take the round 14.5 and this
time it was Robbie Heard with a
two goal effort that led the
scoring,
Perry and Paul Pooley and
Brad Taylor were the other
Exeter goal getters in single
fashion,
Taylor's goal was managed as
he tipped in a shot from Brian
Horrell whO had taken a pass
from Robbie Heard.
Midgets away
to a good start
The Exeter midgets were
successful in their first start in
the annual Hespeler tournament,
Tuesday evening.
The local youngsters coached
by Bill Chipchase edged Paris 3-2
in overtime to qualify for the
next round. Their second game
will he Friday afternoon at 4:45.
Randy Preszcator, Larry
Bourne and Jim Guenther were
the Exeter goal getters.
GET EARLY LEAD
On home ice Friday, the
Hawks scored the only two goals
of the first period and were
never seriously threatened on
the way to their 10-2 win and a
one game edge in the
best-of-seven final.
The Hawks led 6-1 after the
second period of play and
outscored the' Dominions 4-1 in
the last twenty minutes of play.
The forward line of Larry
Haugh, Steve Murley and Ron
Lindenfield Was in high gear as
they scored six goals and picked
up eight assists.
Murley, back after a
one-game layoff led the attack
THE INJUREb WERE THERE TO CHEER - Probably the best cheering section the Exeter Hawks had
in Zurich Sunday night was provided by four players currently out of action because of injuries, Shown
in a happy mood after the game are Mike Hoy, Ron Janke, John Braid and Randy Parsons. r-A photo
