Explorers watch
film on Easter
Donna Leitch was in charge
of the Explorers meeting when a
filmstrip, "What Easter Really
Means" was shown and followed
with discussion.
The worship was conducted
by Wendy Kraul and Joanne
Hodgins.
The chairman of the Christian
Education committee spoke to
the girls and Mrs. William Froats
explained the Mission and
Stewardship projects available.
The members chose to
support the work to help feed
hungry people. Donations were
made to the Anglican Primate's
World Relief Fund and to the
One Day's Pay Campaign of the
United Church.
Mrs. Ross McRoberts
presented gold stars to Karen
Coughlin, Debbie Lynn, Donna
Leitch and Lynn Emery. Patti
Fisher, who was absent will
receive her gold star also.
The group received a letter
thanking them for the
Valentines they had sent to the
Blue Water Nursing Home,
Zurich.
EUCHRE
Trinity church euchre club
met Tuesday with seven tables
playing. Mrs. R. Bowman and
Mrs. C. Shipley were in charge.
The prize winners were:
ladies' high, Mrs. Joe Carter;
ladies' lone hand, Mrs. J. Wilson;
low score, Mrs. E. Hodgins;
men's high, T. Emery; lone
hand, D. Henderson; low score,
L. Emery; door prize, Mrs. H.
Hodgins.
UNITED CHURCH
The topic of Rev. W. C.
Tupling's sermon was "Closing
the Generation Gap." Debbie
Stanley and Donna McLellan
read the lessons.
LEARNING FOR LENT
Learning for Lent at Lucan
United Church welcomed Tony
Hooydonk, Fanshawe Nursery,
to one interest group,
Wednesday morning, where a
demonstration was given to
show the pruning and care of
shrubs and roses using proper
tools. Questions concerning
growth of plants, fungus diseases
and insects came from the
audience and were dealt with
realistically. No solution was
worked out whereby plants,
lawns, and shrubs could be saved
from the neighbors' dogs.
Meeting in the C. E. building
were the artistically inclined
ladies with Mrs. George Jervis
continuing to share her time and
talent and producing attractive
results. A number of beautiful
bows and boxes have been
donated by Mrs. Jervis and it has
been suggested they might be
auctioned at next general UCW,
April 14.
The study continued on
"God Reconciles and Makes
Free". No consensus has been
reached as to how or when this
act is, or will take place.
Discussion centres usually on age
range and the problems facing
youth and how to communicate
better with them.
ANGLICAN
COUPLES' CLUB
At the recent meeting it was
decided that the Couples would
be responsible for the breakfast
after the Easter Sunrise Service
of Holy Communion. Plans were
made to wash the Parish Hall
ceiling and walls. A Rummage
and Bake Sale will be held on
Saturday, May 16.
Lions allot
park money
The Lucan Lions club has
allotted a total of five thousand
dollars for improvements and
additional facilities for Lions
Park to give more enjoyment to
children of Lucan and district.
Included in the improvements
will be lighting of the park,
fencing, washroom facilities,
playground equipment, benches,
portable booths, a soccer field,
shuffleboard court and erection
of a flagpole.
Lions Bill Rovers and Clare
Stanley are co-chairmen of the
project and have already
appointed committees to
implement the various aspects of
improvements. Work is expected
to start as soon as weather
permits.
Zone chairman Jack Noyes of
Ilderton paid his official visit at
Monday's regular meeting and a
zone advisory meeting was held
later in the evening.
Chairman Len Knight
reported Friday's sports day stag
was a financial success and plans
are underway to hold the second
annual sports day at Lions Park
in June.
Members of the Lucan Lions
club will conduct the Red Cross
canvass, Monday, March 30.
The next regular Lions
meeting scheduled for April 6
has been cancelled in favour of a
region rally to be held in
Strathroy, April 8. The entire
Lucan membership will make
the trip to Strathroy by bus.
CHILDREN'S MOVIES
The AYM showed the films:
Wrestling, Ali and his Camel,
Alice in Wonderland and Clown
Princes to the children Saturday
morning. The next group of
films will be shown March 28.
BOARD OF MANAGEMENT
At the Board meeting it was
reported that the plastering of
the holes in the Church and Hall
had been completed. Mr. Arnold
Lewis is finishing the cement
work in the basement of Carlisle
Hall. The sexton, Mrs. R.
Wilkinson has resigned effective
April 30. The two wardens and
the incumbent are the
committee to secure a
replacement.
CHURCH SERVICES
Next Sunday is Palm Sunday
and the Sunday School will meet
at 9:45 a.m. and the Nursery at
11:00 a.m. The Palm Sunday
lessons and hymns will take the
place of Morning Prayer. The
lessons will be read by members
of the Senior Sunday School
class.
Maundy Thursday, Holy
Communion will be celebrated
at 7:30 p.m. Good Friday at
11:00 a.m. the choir will sing
the Sacred Contata 'Olivet to
Calvary' by J. H. Maunder.

Anglican Church, Lucan,
February 20, 1970. She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William
Shipway, Lucan, and the
groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs.

Cancer canvass
gets organized
A meeting of the
Lucan-Biddulph branch of the
London-Middlesex Cancer
Society was held recently at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold
Hodgins.
In attendance were local
branch chairman Steve Storey,
secretary Mrs. Stewart Park, Mrs.
Murray Hodgins, Mrs. Don
Ankers, Mrs. Joe Nagel, Pete
Wallis and Gordon Brooks.
Plans were completed for
Daffodil Sunday to be observed
in the Lucan churches, Sunday,
April 5, The same day a tour will
be made of the Cancer
Laboratory at the University of
Western Ontario, London Cancer
clinic and Thameswood Lodge at
which time tea will be served.
Steve Storey of Lucan and
Pete Wallis of Granton will head
a commercial and special names
canvass for the Lucan-Biddulph
branch commencing Monday,
March 23.
The regular house to house
canvass will start, Monday, April
6. A campaign launching
meeting of the local canvassers
will be held in the Christian
Education building of Lucan
United Church, Thursday, March
31 at ten o'clock in the morning.

Three former Lucanites were
among a bus load of McCormick
residents, taken by the London
Lions to the Park Theatre to see
the show "Hello Dolly" which
was followed by refreshments at
East End Restaurant.
• Saturday night Mrs. Howard
Cranston of London entertained
in honour of her mother Mrs.
Ben Abbott's birthday.
Harold Abbott of Vancouver,
brother of Miss Lina Abbott,
underwent a throat operation
recently.
Mrs. Evan Hodgins attended a
neighborhood shower at the
home of Mrs. Wm. Houston,
Thorndale for her niece Eleanor
Fitzsimmons whose wedding
takes place the latter part of
April at St. George's Church,
Thorndale.
Several ladies from Lucan
attended the afternoon and
evening euchre of the IOOF,
Exeter. Mrs. Jean Miller brought
home the lucky draw of a flower
arrangement.
Mr. & Mrs. Evan Hodgins,
Sunday afternoon called on his
brother Arnold, Ailsa Craig who
is home from the hospital and
making a recovery.
As a token of appreciation
for the fine work of our ladies of
the Auxiliary on April 4, we will
be holding our first Ladies'
Appreciation Banquet. Here the
men will show their culinary art
and wait on our ladies hand and
foot. We trust the ladies will
show up in numbers and give the
men a chance to say thank you
ladies for all you have done for
us.
The Honourable J. E. Dube,
Minister of Veterans' Affairs
recently announced that HRH
the Duke of Kent,GCMG,GCMO,
has been nominated by The
Queen to be president of the
Commonwealth War Graves
Commission. He succeeds his
uncle, HRH The Duke of
Gloucester, KG, KT, KP, GCB,
GCMG, GCVO, who has retired
after, holding the office for
thirty-three years.
The Commonwealth War
Graves Commission, formed in
1 91 7, was created to
commemorate for all time the
Commonwealth war dead. Since
then it has established
cemeteries and memorials in 150
countries of the world
commemorating about one and
one-half million dead of which.
110,500 are identified as
Canadian. Each man has his own
memorial headstone or, if he has
no known grave, his name is
inscribed on one or another of •
the great memorials to the
`missing'.
The Commission is comprised
of representatives of the
Governments of Canada, Britain,
Australia, New Zealand, South
Africa, India and Pakistan.
Canada's representative is the
Canadian High Commissioner to
the United Kingdom. Mr. Dube,
as Minister of Veterans' Affairs,
holds the office of Agency of
the Commission in Canada and
the United States. Each country
shares in the cost of its work on
a pro rata basis in proportion to
the number of the graves of its
war dead.
The Comrades of Branch 540
extend heartiest congratulations
to the Junior D Lucan Irish Six,
their coach and manager for
their competitive spirit and
sportsmanship during their first
year of operation. As a team you
made your presence known
throughout the league and with
a little more seasoning we know
that you will go all the way.

Ladies auxiliary
holds service
The Women's Auxiliary of
the Lucan Revival Centre held
its annual church service Sunday
with Mrs. Howard Currie in
charge and Mrs. John Armitage
as pianist for the occasion.
Musical numbers were
provided by Doug Butler,
Brenda Dykeman and Terry
Holmes, accompanied by Mrs.
Marilyn Dykeman on the piano.
Mrs. John Armitage and Mrs.
Dykeman also sang a duet.
Bruce Cann, Exeter and Don
Luther, Hensall played selections
of their baritone horns,
accompanied by Anita Cann on
the tambourine
Kathy and Christine Cann
with their mother, Mrs. Bruce
Cann, contributed to the service
by singing.
The message was delivered by
Mrs. Douglas Warren of the Zion
United Church, Crediton.
"1 did NOT say you were fat.
I said you were very buoyamt."

her subject The Art of Undress

District newlyweds
honeymoon in states
Clandeboye.
Rev. R. A. Carson performed
the ceremony and Mrs. Beulah
Hardy provided the wedding
music.
The bride, given in marriage
by her father, was lovely in a
long sleeved, floor-length white
taffeta gown which featured an
empire waistline, embroidered in
lace and pearls with matching
train. Her flowers were red and
white carnations, trimmed with
white lace.
Helen Shipway, was her
sister's bridal attendant and
wore a street length gown of
yellow taffeta and chiffon and
carried yellow and white
carnations.
The best man was Leif Berg,
RR 4 Parkhill and the guests
were ushered by the groom's
brother, Brian Trevithick, RR 1
Clandeboye.
After the reception at the
Shillelagh Motor Motel the .
happy couple left for a trip to
Niagara Falls and Buffalo, New
York, the bride wearing a white
and orange dress with black
accessories.
Mr. and Mrs. Trevithick will
reside at RR 1 Ailsa Craig,
Prior to her marriage Mrs.
Trevithick was honored at
several events. Miscellaneous
showers were held by Mrs.
Wilma Avery, Lucan, assisted by
Louise Hayter aim of Lucan,
and by Mrs. Donna Jones, Ailsa
Craig.
The bride's aunt and cousins
gave a kitchen shower for her
and families of the area held a
resentation in, her honor at
Maple Lodge School.
