The annual carnival of the Exeter Figure Skating
Club will be presented Saturday night of this week and
officials have planned a pleasing evening of
en ter tainment.
This year's presentation is entitled "Music From
the Movies" and promises to be colorful and exciting,
For the first time in many years the carnival is being
held later in the year and it is hoped the weatherman
will co-operate with much warmer weather than in
recent years,
All of the 125 members of the local figure skating
club will see action in at least one number. The
youngest participants are three years of age.
A variety of animals will be portrayed by the
local youngsters in colorful costumes. There will be
Davey Crockett's, chipmunks, mice, ducks and
elephants to name just a few.
The feature attraction of the evening will be the
appearance of Cheri and Dennis Pinner of the St,
Thomas Skating Club* This brother and sister
combination were crowned novice pairs champions at
the recent Western Ontario sectional championships.
Cheri was also crowned champion over 40 other
skaters in the ladies juvenile division.
The Pinners have been skating since they were
five years of age.
To make Saturday's carnival a reality and a
success a lot of hard work behind the scenes is
necessary. Preparation of the program began several
months ago and has involved all members of the local
figure skating club executive which is headed by
president Barb Dougherty.
The local club's professional instructress, Mrs.
Faye McDonald is mainly responsible for the show. In
her tenth season at the helm of the local club, Mrs.
McDonald selects the numbers to be presented and
handles all the choreography along with the musical
renditions, of which most are taped from district church
services.
The most hectic day for the executive is Saturday
when the arena must be decorated and the ice surface
painted for the upcoming show. Any volunteers with an
hour or two of time to spare Saturday afternoon will be
more than welcome at the arena.
While Saturday will be hectic, Monday afternoon
was a busy time at the arena when costumes are fitted
and sometimes some juggling is necessary to get the
proper fit.
Most of the costumes that will be worn Saturday
night are rented from other figure skating clubs in
Western Ontario. The local club pays anywhere from a
dollar and a half to four dollars for the outfits.
In turn each skater pays a rental fee of two
dollars for his or her costume, In addition to boys and
girls from Exeter, youngsters from Dashwood, Hensall,
Crediton and the surrounding townships are taking
regular lessons at the local club and will be appearing in
Saturday's carnival.
While the skating members of the club pay a
goodly sum of money in registrations, success of the
club's year depends a great deal on the support received
frcim the general public at the annual carnival.
The abilities of the young skaters have been
improving each year and we are sure anyone attending
Saturday's show that gets underway at eight o'clock will
be assured of a good night's entertainment.
Incidentally, for the first time the show will be
divided into two sections with the junior skaters
appearing in the first hour of the program and the older
club members showing their talents in the last hour.
Another Carnival
While on the subject of skating carnivals, the
Huron Park Figure skating club will present their first
annual show, Tuesday night of next week at seven
o'clock at the Huron Park arena.
The youthful Huron Park skaters will be seen in
numerous colorful costumes as they present "Variety on
Ice."
Mrs. Don Pearson is president of the Huron Park
club and Mrs. Edith Bell of Hensall is the instructress.
