Skiing k By DAVE BIEMAN Now that the ski shops are clearing out their stock many people may be considering buying equipment for their youngsters. Perhaps you aren't sure whether or not your child is ready to ski. The best age is from 6 to 7. Young children • are quite willing to start something new, and as they haven't far to fall they're less prone to injuries. Equipment for children must be purchased under different guidelines than for yourself. The skis should be about the same height as the child. Start them off with steel edges so they will get used to them. The bindings of course should be safety bindings and should be of the type made especially for children. (Be sure the child knows how to operate them in case of a fall). The boots are the big expense, DON'T buy them one size too large to make them last. You will get a better fit by buying used boots and trading each year. Naturally keep the children dressed warmly, this will keep their spirits (and yours!) up and the extra padding will help in a fall. As with everyone the earlier that you start them on lessons the safer and better they will be. If you still have doubts about starting your child consider the benefits of a family spending a day together in our great outdoors. The notes that are given on dress are just intended as guide-lines to the generally accepted fashions in most Canadian Figure Skating Clubs. On the legs, leotards, beige, plain stitch. A skating dress or skirt and sweater, Small children sometimes wear Slacks, but it is surprising how much more enthusiasm a little girl will have when she feels she looks like a skater, Skating costumes may consist of a one-piece dress-pantie combination, separate dress and pants; or skirt, pants and sweater, etc. Panties should always match the skirt, preferably in both material and colour, Skating dresses that have attached skirts, should have the skirt attached at the hip line, never at the waist. Skirts should just cover the crotch in front (when the skater is standing) and be longer in the back by two or three inches to Over the lower ed e of the panties. or the most warmth and comfort, double-knit wool jersey is the best. The new synthetic knits are also very good, but not as warm. Corduroy, velveteen, and nOn.stretch woollen materials are satisfactory but not as comfortable for advanced skaters. On practice dresses, the most suitable trimmings are: braid, lace, yarn, contrasting material The Lucan-II derton Jets proved over the past week they are capable of coming up with outstanding offensive and defensive displays pf hockey. As a result the Jets hold a two-games-to-one edge over the Durham Huskies in the best-of-seven Ontario Hockey Association Intermediate "B" group final. In the first game of the series in Durham, Friday the Jets dropped a 2-0 decision to the Huskies with the final Durham goal that ensured the win coming in the last minute of play. Back on Huron Park ice, Sunday afternoon it was a different story as the Jets went on a scoring rampage and swamped the Durham club 9-4. Tuesday night in Durham, it Was the defensive forces of the Jets that shone. With goalie Wayne Parkinson leading the way with brilliant goal tending the Jets edged the Huskies 1-0 to take a one game edge in the series. The fourth game of the set will be played at Huron Park Friday night at 8:30 with the fifth slated for Durham Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. COACH PROVIDES GOAL Playing coach Jack Nairn back in the Jets lineup after missing Sunday's game due to fractured nose suffered last week scored the only goal of the game. Nairn combined with Steve Storey and Doug Galloway at 8:47 of the second period to fire the puck behind Gord Becker in the Durham nets. Less than two minutes after Nairn's successful shot Dale Rahn of the Huskies was tagged with a match misconduct penalty,. The Huskies put on the pressure especially in the third period in attempt to get the equalizer but the great efforts of goalie Wayne Parkinson kept the Huskies off the score sheet. FIRED UP CLUB Sunday afternoon at Huron Park, the Jets were a fired-up club and were determined to win for playing coach Jack Nairn who was not able to dress. The forward line of Jamie Robb, Jim Bender and Jacques Cousineau put on one of the best combined efforts of the season in leading the Jet scoring parade. Scoring was rather confined in the first period with the only goal coming from the stick of Jamie Robb at 9.46 with Don Urbshott and Jim Bender assisting. Things opened up considerably in the middle frame with the Jets taking a 4.1 lead. Bender, Dusty Aldis and Jacques Cousineau were the Lucan-Ilderton marksmen while Larry Schafer was the Durham scorer. The Jets wasted little time hitting the scoreboard in the third period with Steve Proctor completing a three-way passing effort with Steve Storey and Doug Galloway at the ten second mark. The second Jet goal of the last period came on one of the best stickhandling displays of the season. Jamie Robb broke loose at centre ice and maneuvred his way past two or three Durham defenders and pulled goalie Becker completely out of position to score. At 6:25 Galloway hit the scoring mark with Larry Hossack and Dusty Aidis assisting and six minutes later Robb repeated with another smooth stick handling effort. The final Jet goal was scored with ten seconds to gp by defenceman Don Urbshott on a long drive from the blue line. The third period Durham rals were scored by Len Long, Herman and Schafer. With twelve seconds left in the game Jim Bender of the Jets received a game misconduct for fighting with Jim Piche of Durham, Bender was not in the lineup in Durham Tuesday and will miss the next two games due to a suspension received in the last Elmira game. ALWAYS IN DOUBT The outcome of the opening game in Durham won by the Huskies 2-0 was in doubt right to the final minute. Murray Stephens scored the first goal of the game for the Huskies at 1:35 of the second period and the score remained 1-0 until 19:22 of the third period when Jim Nixon scored while the Jets were attempting to get Wayne Parkinson out of the net in favor of an extra forward. That's why we're retiring 'Old Faithful' in favor of a new and better Safety '99'. Wider. Flatter. Stronger. Heavier than its million or more predecessors. Changes not just for the sake of change- but to meet the heavy demands of today's driving. We like to be a jump ahead. We have to figure what happens to tires at speeds you may not even need. You see, tire failures increase alarmingly as speeds increase. A tire tread driven at the old speed-limit of 60 m.p.h. will run almost twice as far as one now driven at '70. And a tire capable of giving 25,000 service miles at 50 m.p.h. will survive only 6,000 at 80 m.p.h. A sobering thought- back of our determination to make tires safer, stronger, longer-lived. SAFETY '99' -in nylon or polyester - is a leader and we aim to keep it that way. Ride it and you'll know it.
