Good
show
If any area sports enthusiasts happen to be in the
Toronto area in the next couple of weeks and have a
few hours to spare a trip to the Sportsmen's Show could
prove to be very interesting,
The show opens tomorrow, Friday at the
Canadian National Exhibition Coliseum and is a I 0-day
showcase of outdoor products and activities.
While the event now in its 23rd year means many
things to different sporting people, to enthusiastic
fishermen of all ages, it's second only to dropping a line
on opening day,
To many fishermen, the show presents a once a
year opportunity to meet and speak with fishing writers,
tournament winning bait casters and well-known tackle
manufacturers.
Between them they represent countless years of
fishing experience and generally they are pleased to
provide advice and even instruction during the show.
Some of the tackle people offer show specials
that can't be matched in sporting stores, so be prepared
for a bargain by checking before the show on regular
prices.
In the past a few major tackle companies have
repaired without charge any of their own equipment
that the public may have brought to the show, and some
firms may still do so. As broken fishing reels are small
enough to be carried in a pocket it could pay to attend
the show with free repairs in mind.
Be sure to look over your present gear so that
your wants are known by the time of your visit to the
Coliseum. Once there get the feel of new equipment
through evaluation tests via first hand tryouts in the
show's big casting pool, located on the ground floor,
east wing.
Many tackle displays face the pool and the
expertise of sales staff can dispel many of your doubts,
indecisions and fish-wives' fallacies. The same pool is
the site of highly competitive casting tournaments.
Naturally, everybody wants to know where to
find good fishing and here the people with the answers
can be found staffing resort and tourist area association
booths in the travel and vacation section of the show,
located to the extreme east on the ground floor.
This is the place to load up on lodge brochures,
fishing folders, topographical maps and the like. If you
are interested in Ontario's farthest northern white water
country, inquire at'out Indian-operated fishing camps at
the Department of Indian Affairs exhibit.
The exhibits of rod and gun clubs are worth
visiting. Veteran outdoorsmen in the Toronto Anglers'
and Hunters' Association booth will be pleased to
explain the angling opportunities enjoyed by their
members and the same is true for the boys at the
Ontario Federation of Anglers' and Hunters' display.
A visit to the Sportsmen's Show is not complete
unless one takes in the interesting and attractive display
of provincial game fish provided by the Ontario
Department of Lands and Forests. The fish are part of
an excellent conservation and wildlife exhibit in the
upper east wing.
Former Exeterite Top Curler
A former Exeter resident was a member of a
Colborne Curling Club rink that won an International
bonspiel in Uttica, New York recently.
"Hum" Willard joined with Wes Sheppard, Alf
Thrower and Russell Teal to take the three-day
competition that attracted 28 rinks from the United
States and Canada.
Hum is a brother of Ernest "Pete" Willard who
was a top amateur hockey player in these parts quite a
few years ago.
