Blommaert 689) 0 48 Despite the predictions by a lot of sport fans that expansion in the National Hockey league would dilute the brand of hockey and disenchant a majority of the fans in most of the big league cities, attendance is on the increase at all NHL rinks except one. The only one that has failed to show a rise in attendance is Toronto and the decrease at Maple Leaf Gardens has only been five fans per game for the first part of this season, With the brand of hockey the Leafs have been playing lately, a decrease of only five spectators is probably a very encouraging sign. In overall 196970 attendance, the New York Rangers lead the league with Toronto, St. Louis, Boston, Minnesota, Detroit, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and Oakland following in that order. Montreal and Chicago both rank at the top, probably ahead of New York, but neither club releases attendance figures until the end of the season. In Philadelphia, the Flyers are on their way to outdrawing all other major professional sports in the city, baseball, basketball and football. With playoff attendance added, general manager Keith Allen expects a total of more than 525,000 fans for this year. If Allen's projected figure is reached it will top the 1969 attendance of 519,414 of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Philadelphia Eagles football club and Philadelphia 76'ers basketballers are nowhere near these figures. The average decrease of five fans in Toronto appears in the amount of standing room tickets sold. Reserved seats for a Saturday night Toronto home game are still as difficult to obtain as ever. The new expansion clubs are making numerous trades with the established teams that are keeping most line-ups dotted with well known names in the game. Even if Gump Worsley fails to appear often in the nets for Minnesota lineup his possible presence is sure to bolster attendance wherever his team goes. Probably the most pleasing increase for the National Hockey League governors is in television ratings in the United States. Last August, CBS was ready to cancel plans to carry their Game of the Week. At present 147 American television stations carry a NHL game every week, usually Sunday afternoon. The latest Nielsen rating showed an average of four million homes were tuned into the Game of the Week for a total audience of about ten million. Here in Canada, CBC's Hockey Night in Canada is still number one in television ratings with an estimated audience of four million each Saturday night. Hockey interest is growing in all expansion cities. Los Angeles Kings, probably the worst team in the league drew 14,163 for a recent game when the Boston Bruins were in town. This proves that a top attraction team in any sport will draw well, even if their opposition is not up to par. The silent majority that occupies most of Maple Leaf Gardens seats may yawn its way through most games against expansion teams, but the same players are accepted as exciting enough stars in their own cities. • Maple Leaf fans may not be impressed when the Minnesota North Stars are in the Gardens, but we're sure the fans in Minnesota Sunday afternoon were enthusiastic when their North Stars trounced the Leafs 8-0. Detroit Red Wings will exceed 500,000 fans for the first time. There are 13,235 seats -in the Olympia, but the Wings have averaged 13,952 fans per game. When Montreal Canadiens played Jan. 25, the crowd of 15,388 was an Olympia record. Last Sunday, Canadiens returned and attracted 15,390. Wings' standing room capacity is 2,155. In Montreal, attendance varies according to the sales of about 2,000 standing room tickets. "We're like Toronto in that all of the seats are sold for virtually every game," Montreal vice-president Howard Hamilton said. "So our attendance depends on the number of people who want to stand up. "And that depends on the weather and if the game is going to be shown on television. "Three games back our attendance was down from last year. Now it's up a few hundred. It changes quickly." 31 25 49 22 26 27 JR. & SR. BOYS & GIRLS DY (B. MacDonald 487) 5 ST (J. Brintnell 429) 0 KED (R. Tieman 413) 3 CC (B. Campbell 351) 2 AT (O. Miners 416) 5 (J. Irish Finished This is just a quick note near press time to let our friends in Lucan know that the local Hawks eliminated their Irish Six in five games. Possibly two of our friends could make a trip to the bank before we make our next visit to Lucan to collect. Seriously, we would like to send our congratulations to Jim Freeman, John Anderson and all the people involved with the first year of operation of the Lucan juniors. With one year of good competition under their belts, we're sure they will be back in the thick of things again next year. Also congratulations to Bob Baynham and Bob White and best wishes to the Exeter Hawks as they proceed down the playoff trail with a provincial championship as their goal. SAVE NOW ON YOUR CAR NEEDS .
