HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Exeter Times-Advocate, 1970-02-19, Page 14Our second annual Children's Snowmobile party held on Sunday, February 8 is now past history, but all in all it was a tremendous success thanks to the Um Ariens Snowmobile Club and Comrade Roy Hodgins about 200 children spent an enjoyable afternoon skidoo riding. It was also our pleasure to host the Royal Canadian Legion Zone A5 Public Speaking Contest on Friday 13, Under the capable chairmanship of Comrade Rev. Lovell, Glencoe, an audience of about 100 enjoyed a variety of excellent speeches. Our Grateful thanks to Judges Mr. Ron Crozier, Lucan, Mr. Wilbert McKean, Glencoe and Mr. Joe Lynch, Parkhill for a difficult job well done and to the ladies of our Auxiliary for the excellent lunch which followed. And a special thanks to the Time Advocate genial photographer Ross Haugh and to Mrs. Engel for attending and taking the photos of the winners, which are also shown on this page, On Friday, February 27 at 8:15 p.m. Branch 540 and Molsons Breweries are co-sponsoring the Branch Mixed Sports Night. Freddie Allen was admitted to War Memorial Children's Hospital, London Monday for observation. PATON CLANDEBOYE On Ash Wednesday morning holy communion was celebrated in St. James Church. This was a preparation for Mission '70 which will begin on Monday with the film, Profile of Problem Drinker. Other films shown through the week will be Tuesday, Dropout; Wednesday, Little White Crimes and Thursday, Shattered Silence. After each film a discussion will take place. Sunday, the sermon topic, was on Town and Country. Rev. Carson suggested the town and country would disappear if the church and politicians do not give rigorous leadership. He said for years the rural areas supplied labour to the cities at no cost in education for the city. But since 1942 the urban birth rate has increased so fast that the cities are having trouble keeping up to the financial strain of education costs. By MRS. HAROLD 'DAVIS Mrs. Lorne Marshall was hostess for February meeting of UCW on Wednesday with 30 ladies present. Mrs. Harry Burgin opened the meeting with the worship service. She was assisted by Mrs. Elliott, Mrs. Herman Pay nter and Mrs. Burgin. Mrs. Ewart Crago gave a very interesting talk on "poverty" from the study book. Mrs. Stuart Shier presented highlights from the Huron Perth Presbyterial meeting held in Clinton. World day of prayer will be held in church March 6th at 8 o'clock. EUCHRE The hall board sponsored a progressive euchre at Aberdeen Hall Monday evening Prize winners were: ladies high, Mrs. L. Beckett; lone hands, Mrs. T. Coward; men's high, Ross Jaques; lone hands, Heber Shute. PERSONALS Mr. & Mrs. Ray Switzer of North Bay spent the weekend with Mr. & Mrs. Jack Switzer and family. Turner were among the friends who visited Mr. & Mrs. Bill Parker, Petrolia, for their house warming Saturday night. They left their daughter, Mavis with her grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Don Abbott. Mrs. Howard Cranston who was confined to her home for several Months after her operation in Victoria Hospital Was able to visit her daughter and family Mr. & Mrs. Ron Hunt, and her first grandson last Sunday, Wayne Culbert, formerly of Lucan, who was robbed and beaten in LOndon two weeks ago is still a patient in Victoria Hospital. Mrs. Don McTaggart and family, London, were Saturday guests of Mrs, Bob Coleman. Mr. & Mrs. Don Abbott visited Mrs, Cliff MacLean who is a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital, Doctors have now diagnosed Mrs. Prances SaWard's illness as hepatitis, Mrs. Saward is still in the hospital. An hilarious valentine party was held at the McCormick Home Friday. Miss Jean Ross, formerly of Lucan, was crowned Miss Valentine for 1970, She was presented with a prize and a bouquet of flowers, Miss Valentine'S badge and crown were made by Miss Lina Abbott, a Winner of the candle blowing contest and word contest. Rev. Carson cited the Centralia Industrial Park as an example of what can be done to provide industrialization in rural areas. He concluded by saying that the church must be alive in society if it is to bring in the Kingdom of God. Next Sunday, is the second in Lent and is the beginning of brotherhood week. W.I. The Women's Institute met at the home of Mrs. Allan Hill. Roll call was answered by 12 members by "an electric appliance I would like to own." Mrs. Roy Cunningham presided over the business. A donation was voted for the Canadian Institute for the Blind. An interesting talk on Health was given by Mrs. Peter Groeneuregen and Mrs. Maurice Simpson spoke informatively too. The district president, Mrs. H. Brophey, RR 3 Parkhill will speak at the next meeting. NEIL SCHOOL EUCHRE The regular euchre pwas held at Neil school onartlriday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Pete Voisin and Mr, and Mrs. Tom Kooy on committee. • Ladies' high score went to Mrs. Wilfred, Dixon; lone hands to Mrs. Charlie Rollings and low score to Mrs. Joe Conlin. Men's high score went . to Murray Carter; lone hands to Jim Dixon, and Low score to Hi Thompson, travelling prize, Karl Pickering. PERSONALS Mrs. Velma Hardy, her daughter Coraline, Clandeboye and Mrs, Harold Snelgrove of Lucan attended 4-H Achievement Day in Strathroy recently. The theme was the Cereal Shelf. Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Morgan are home again after being confined to St. Joseph's Hospital for several weeks. LUCAN UNITED CHURCH Debra Stanley and David Latta read the lessons at the Sunday morning service. The minister, Rev. W. C. Tupling, spoke on Freedom to be Free taking as his test Gelation 5:1. He also reminded the teens of the weekly confirmation classes each Friday evening. HOLY TRINITY CHURCH TRINITY COUPLES CLUB The Couples Club attended the Ash-Wednesday Holy Communion in a group. After the service they met in Carlisle Hall to hear J. A. Lister of Lucan speak on his experiences while a Prisoner of War in the Far East. He told the group of how the Japanese and Korean DALEY'S WEEKLY COMMENTS Children enjoy rides SATURDAY MOVIES The A.Y.M. sponsored films for the children on Valentines Day, in Carlisle Hall. These films were shown Willie Catches On, Two Men and a Wardrobe and World in a Marsh. On February 28, the Thief of Bagdad, Three Musketeers, and World of Three will be shown. CUBS The Cubs first meeting was held in Carlisle Hall on Friday. It was decided to meet Mondays at 5:00 p.m. in the future. All boys aged 8,9,10, 11 are invited to become members of the Pack. ANGLICAN SUNDAY SERVICES Mission '70 began Sunday evening in Carlisle Hall. The film Hazel and David, was shown, and a discussion followed on communications in the family. Through Monday to Thursday a different film and discussion will be held at 7:30 P.M. Next Sunday is the 2nd Sunday in Lent. The Sunday School meets at 9:45 a.m. At 11:00 a.m. the the Service of Morning Prayer, Nursery and League of Loyalty will take place.
