Two day program
Huron plow group at annual
More than three hundred
district farmers jammed into the
Dashwood Community Centre
to hear that collective bargaining
is the answer to their problems,
Monday.
Peter Myers, director of
organization of the National
Farmers' Union was speaking on
behalf of South Huron local 206
of NFU which expects to receive
its charter sometime in March.
Others addressing the meeting
were Blake Sanford, Essex
County and Jerry Huzevka,
Lambton.
Mr. Myers said, "As an
individual, the fanner has little
bargaining power. The firms he
buys from ask a price for the
goods they sell and those who
buy his product tell him how
much they are willing to pay.
Both need him to stay in
business."
"The farmer is a price cutter
of his own product, He is in
competition with every other
farmer. Other businesses are
organized and set their prices.
They know competition
destroys profit," added the guest
speaker.
The farmer takes the price
that is offered often selling
Rabbit film
is shown
The February meeting of the
South Huron Rabbit Breeders'
Association was held Tuesday
evening in the Elimville Hall
with a good turn out of
members.
Mr. Roy Pearn of Purina
Feeds was guest of the club and
provided members with a very
enjoyable evening. A film on
rabbit raising was shown by Mr.
Pearn followed by a question
and answer period.
Business of the evening
included plans by the social
committee for a euchre party,
February 24. Plans are also being
finalized for a dinner dance to
be held April 3 at the Crediton
Community Centre.
Changeg were made in
marketing fees as the system of
shipping rabbits has changed
recently due to the processor
picking up in the area. A new
office was formed of club
librarian and registrar and the
post will be filled by Ron
Parsons.
Auctioneer for the Dutch
Auction was David Stanley and
the winner was Andy Miller.
Election of officers will be
held at the next meeting of the
club, March 10 at the Elimville
Hall.
directly without asking buyers
to compete,
Continuing the same theme,
the other speakers said, "Alone,
the farmer has no bargaining
power against corporations and
integrated organizations in
agriculture. He must join with all
farmers across Canada to gain
the necessary bargaining power
to stay in business."
Mr. Myers stated that one of
the most recent NFU
achievements was the school tax
reduction. Over 100 townships
and county councils had
endorsed the brief which called
for the removal of education
Lookout 70's is the general
theme for the 1970 Farm Show
that will be held at the Western
Fairgrounds in London, March
3, 4, 5 and 6. Four special
theatre programs highlight the
four-day show as they take a
serious look at the modern-day
farmer and his problems,
opportunities and future.
One of the most interesting
programs will be held on Friday,
March 6 as several outstanding
speakers look at "Land and.
Legislation". They will discuss,
such current topics as whether
or not to own or rent farmland,'
air and water pollution, and land,
ascpssment and taxation.
The very latest in farm
equipment and modern
machinery will be on display, as
well as hundreds of home and
farm equipment exhibits. Special
films, baking exhibits and
demonstrations will also be
highlighted.
For the ladies, an
ever-changing program of
exciting fashions,
taxes from farm lands and
agricultural buildings.
Some townships have gone so
far as to appeal their assessments
levied. Many sent letters to the
Department of Municipal Affairs
requesting this unfair tax burden
be removed.
According to Mr. Myers, the
National Farmers' Union is not
advocating the abolishment of
existing marketing boards but in
some areas wants these boards to
be more aggressive.
NFU claims that a provincial
marketing board cannot operate
or bargain effectively in national
or international markets.
demonstrations and
competitions. Tuesday, a special
program of floral arrangement;

evening, and a Junior
Farmerama on Thursday evening
featuring the winners from the
Ontario competitions.
Beauty and charm take the

following the crowning, fashions
