Sorority Winter Fantasy dance a social event 1' St. Valentines Day Was the wedding day for Judith Elizabeth Walters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Walters, Exeter, and Robert Wayne Laye, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Laye, Crediton. 4• 4 Rev. Glen Wright officiated at the ceremony which was performed in Exeter United Church at 3:00 P.M. The bride, given in marriage by her father, was lovely in a gown of silk crepe and lace with elbow length sleeves and high 4 waist line. She also wore a shoulder length veil and carried red roses and white carnations in 10, • Practical and glamorous clothes were modelled by the Home • Economics girls at Centralia College of Agricultural Technology's Open House '70 as they went on a fantasy global tour. The garments, all beautifully constructed were for many types of climates and weather and for every hour of the day. Paula Hewitt of Paula Hewitt Model and Charm School rehearsed the students for the show which never lagged for a moment and was extremely well planned and presented. The outfits were either self designed or made from commercial patterns and featured everything from beach wear to bridal attire. The fashion show was climaxed by the entrance of the college queen coming down the ramp in a floor length, yellow figured gown. Miss Smith who hails from Vancouver is a striking blond and was • well chosen for the honor of queen. She is a second year student in the Animal Health Technicians Course. * Sewing, crafts of many kinds, millinery and crimplene display were exhibited in the textile room. `Fatigue and the Housewife' demonstrations featured a quick, easy way to make a bed using the least possible movements, tests to record fatigue endurance, and the newest in electrical appliances to help the housewife with her work. A quote from a pamphlet had this interesting information: "Dr. Walter Alvarez, a famous doctor attached to the Mayo Clinic, attributes a great many cases of fatigue in females to the overconsumption of soft drinks and too tight girdles! "If you've cut down on the amount of pop you drink and bought a bigger size girdle and still feel pooped, then you should have a complete physical examination to discover the cause of your fatigue." Beta Sigma Phi Sorority's Annual Ball is changing its locale this year. The "Winter Fantasy" is being held next Friday in Huron Hall at the Centralia College of Agricultural Technology with the well known orchestra of Lionel Thornton providing the dance music, In addition to the dance the Sorority isproviding a buffet supper in Huron Hall's dining room for all patrons attending the ball. They are hopeful that a number of former members and their friends will be present to renew old acquaintances and make new ones. The annual dance has a history of 21 years, the first being held in the gymnasium of the Exeter arena in 1949. It took place there once more in 1950 but was moved to the Exeter Legion Hall from that time until this year. For many years the dance was called the "Balloon Ball" and older members will recall all the huffing and puffing it took to decorate the hall with hundreds and hundreds of balloons. However, this tradition was finally broken, and since then it has gone under many names to suit the season or the decorations ... Snow Ball, Starlight Ball, Sorority Ball, Sweetheart Ball and now this year, Winter Fantasy. Norma Wilson had the honor of being the first Sorority Sweetheart in 1948. She now lives in Hollywood, California, with her family and husband, Robert C. Dennis, noted T.V. and screen writer. Mrs. Jack Doerr, wife of Exeter's photographer, was sweetheart for 1949. Although there were two other sweethearts before her, Mrs. Eileen Fulcher, Ottawa, was the first one crowned at a dance in 1950. This was the commencement of a tradition that has been carried out every year since. D. Schaeffer, 1966; Mrs. Shirley Smith, 1967; Mrs. Peter Raymond, 1968 and Mrs. William Brock, 1969. Beta Sigma Phi members have already cast their ballot for this year's Sweetheart but the result will not be known to them or to the public until the evening of the "Winter Fantasy." The committee in charge of this years ball is co-convened by Mrs. Peter Raymond and Mrs. Frank Giffin. Assisting them are Mrs. Gunnar Pind, Mrs. Don Gaiser and Mrs. Wm. Schaefer. BSP learn of jewellery Jewellery was the topic of discussion at the Beta Sigma Phi meeting held at the home of Mrs. Robert Chaffe, Andrew Street. Earl Campbell, qualified gem ol ogist, of Campbell Jewellers gave an interesting and informative talk on jewellery. He spoke on the different gems and metals used on the making of jewellery. Members responsible for program were Mrs. Robert Chaffe and Mrs. Robert Fletcher. Plans were made for "Hydro Show Time" in April during the business session. the shape of a heart. Judy Desjardine, the maid of honor, was gowned in a floor length dress in shades of mauve and purple peau de soie. Her headpiece was a single deep purple flower and her bouquet was of yellow mums. A wedding dinner followed the ceremony at the Shillelagh Motel, Lucan, after which the bride changed into a pink ensemble with black accessories. The groom is a teacher at Brucefield Centennial School and he and his' bride will reside at 69 Sanders Street, Exeter. A MINI COURSE FOR MAXI SAVINGS A series of lecture-demonstrations, given by students and staff in the Home Economics Division at Centralia College, will be offered in March. Stress will be placed on obtaining the maximum value from the deflated housekeeping dollar.
