The pamphlet states further
that nourishment is often a
problem for the housewife.
"She may be so busy
preparing meals for her family
that she neglects eating properly
herself. Without food, or with
food that is insufficient either in
quality or amount, the
housewife soon loses the ability
to withstand physical exertion."
"A good breakfast is a must for
the housewife."

The outfits were either self

The fashion show was

`Fatigue and the Housewife'
demonstrations featured a quick,
easy way to make a bed using
the least possible movements,
tests to record fatigue
endurance, and the newest in

housewife with her work. A
quote from a pamphlet had this
interesting information: "Dr.
Walter Alvarez, a famous doctor
attached to the Mayo Clinic,
attributes a great many cases of
fatigue in females to the
overconsumption of soft drinks
and too tight girdles!
"If you've cut down on the
amount of pop you drink and
bought a bigger size girdle and
still feel pooped, then you
should have a complete physical
examination to discover the
cause of your fatigue."

Beta Sigma Phi Sorority's
Annual Ball is changing its locale
this year.
The "Winter Fantasy" is
being held next Friday in Huron
Hall at the Centralia College of
Agricultural Technology with
the well known orchestra of
Lionel Thornton providing the dance music,
In addition to the dance the
Sorority isproviding a buffet
supper in Huron Hall's dining
room for all patrons attending
the ball.
They are hopeful that a
number of former members and
their friends will be present to
renew old acquaintances and
make new ones.
The annual dance has a
history of 21 years, the first
being held in the gymnasium of
the Exeter arena in 1949. It
took place there once more in
1950 but was moved to the
Exeter Legion Hall from that
time until this year.
For many years the dance
was called the "Balloon Ball"
and older members will recall all
the huffing and puffing it took
to decorate the hall with
hundreds and hundreds of
balloons. However, this tradition
was finally broken, and since
then it has gone under many
names to suit the season or the
decorations ... Snow Ball,
Starlight Ball, Sorority Ball,
Sweetheart Ball and now this
year, Winter Fantasy.
Norma Wilson had the honor
of being the first Sorority
Sweetheart in 1948. She now
lives in Hollywood, California,
with her family and husband,
Robert C. Dennis, noted T.V.
and screen writer.
Mrs. Jack Doerr, wife of
Exeter's photographer, was
sweetheart for 1949.
Although there were two
other sweethearts before her,
Mrs. Eileen Fulcher, Ottawa, was
the first one crowned at a dance
in 1950. This was the
commencement of a tradition
that has been carried out every
year since.
Sweethearts who moved away
from this community include
the 1951 queen, Anna Brock,

attendance both days of the

children and husband, Jim
Rowcliffe, realtor; Ann
Kartushyn (1954) who, as a
buyer for Macy's in New York
travels about the world
extensively, and Mrs. John
Goman (1957) living in Welland
where her husband is employed.
Other sorority members who
have been similarity honored by
their sorority sisters and who,
for the most part, are still active
in the organization and living in
the community are: Mrs. Ted
Jones, 1952; Mrs. Don Gaiser,
1953; Mrs. Ross Tuckey, 1954;
Mrs. Richard Weber, 1955 Mrs.
Robert Dinney, 1956,
Mrs. William Schlegel, 1958;
Mrs, Mel Geiser, 1959; Mrs.
Wally Read, 1960; Mrs. Allan
Gascho, 1962; Mrs. Joe Wooden,
1963; Mrs. Norman Amos, 1964;
Mrs. Robert Fletcher, 1965; Mrs.
Wm. D. Schaeffer, 1966; Mrs.
Shirley Smith, 1967; Mrs. Peter
Raymond, 1968 and Mrs.
William Brock, 1969.
Beta Sigma Phi members have
already cast their ballot for this
year's Sweetheart but the result
will not be known to them or to
the public until the evening of
the "Winter Fantasy."
The committee in charge of
this years ball is co-convened by
Mrs. Peter Raymond and Mrs.
Frank Giffin. Assisting them are
Mrs. Gunnar Pind, Mrs. Don
Gaiser and Mrs. Wm. Schaefer.
