After winning handily 12-0 on their home ice last Tuesday, the Jets were overconfident and • lost a 8-7 decision in Acton Friday. Back at Huron Park, Sunday afternoon, the Jets regained their one game lead in the series with a 11.1 win and finished off the Tanners in Acton, Monday night by a score of 9-5. ' In the other series, the Elmira Polar Kings lead the Fergus Thistles two games to one, The fourth game is being played Friday. If Elmira wins the first game with the Jets could be played at Huron Park, Sunday afternoon. COACH AGAIN LEADS Playing coach Jack Nairn continues to lead the Jets in a scoring way. In the last three games against Acton, Nairn scored seven goals and picked up eight assists for a fifteen point • total. While Larry Hossack was the Lucan-Ilderton scoring hero in Acton Monday with a three goal effort, the playing coach scored on one occasion and assisted on three other plays. Nairn and Steve Proctor were the L-I goal getters in the second period while Steve Storey and Ken Loft tallied late in the third period after Acton had rallied to come within two goals of tying the count. The Jets played the Monday night contest without the services of Jamie Robb and Dave Webster, Both are out for a short time with injuries. Only nine penalties were called including minors and majors to Doug Galloway of the Jets and Brian McDuff of Acton. FIVE GOAL EFFORT After suffering an 8-7 loss in Acton, Friday, coach Nairn wasted little time Sunday afternoon in showing his team-mates what needed to be done to get back on winning ways. Nairn scored the first four goals of the game in the first period and added his fifth of the afternoon late in the third period. Scoring in the second session MEN'S "A" LEAGUE UN (H. If this is correct, we will be playing a subway series with the Exeter Hawks. February 11, Bob White's Hawks came to Lucan and after twenty minutes of play were leading by a three to two score. Then, after a scoreless second period, Mike Anderson scored the tying goal for Lucan, at the 8:30 mark. The game was only six minutes old when Rick Schell put the Hawks in front. Gord Hardy who improves every game, tied the game at 11.42. One minute later the Hawks were back in front on a goal by Barry Baynham. With six minutes left in the period Steve Murley scored Exeter's third goal. Dennis Burt scored for the Irish with only one second left in the second period. Exeter outshot Lucan twenty-six to fourteen. A total of twenty-two penalties was called, eleven to each club. The three stars were: first star, Jerry Freeman, the Irish net-minder; second star, Barry Baynham, of the Hawks; third star went to Lucan's Tom Anderson. Again Friday night, the same two clubs met in Exeter, with the Hawks winning by a six to two score. In the up-coming series manager Jim Freeman feels that the Irish can beat the Hawks in five games or if the Hawks get lucky, it may take six games. John Anderson, the coach, has been unable to come up with an effective power play, and feels that he will have to overcome this problem before the first round of play-offs begins. He is very pleased with the defensive play of Gord Hardy, and Jim Hearn, but he knows that his first line will have to skate both ways to beat the Hawks. See you at the play-offs. for the Jets was Rick Bradford on a play started by Dave Webster and Jacques Cousineau. In the third period, Bradford notched his second goal on a hard shot from the left point and other goals were added in single fashion by Ken Loft, Dave Webster, Doug Galloway, Steve Storey and Nairn. LET-UP HURTS In Acton, Friday, the Jets held a 6-4 lead after two periods of play but were unable to hold the Tanners at bay as they came on to win 8.7, Jim Bender and Jamie Robb scored for the Jets in the first period while the Tanners were scoring three times. The L-I boys opened up in the second and appeared to be well on the way to a win. Jacques Cousineau, Don Urbshott, Jack Nairn and Dave Webster were the goal scorers. In the third session, Acton scored four times to take an 8-6 lead and the only scoring the Jets could muster was a lone tally by Robb in the last couple of minutes. OU (B. Hogg 534) 1 NO (B. Brian Mercer, David Atthill and Brian Horrell scored the other Boston goals. Figure 8 The important factors to consider in purchasing skates for beginners are fit and support. Skates should fit as closely as ordinary shoes. Try them on over one pair of leotards — no extra socks, please! Skates may be purchased second-hand, if you wish, provided they fit properly, and retain most of their original stiffness to give support. Keep the white parts of the boots clean with white shoe polish. Wash the laces, The heel and black sole edges may be covered, (when the skates thoroughly dry), with a layer of electrician's black plastic tape. Blades should be sharpened regularly. Ask the seniors where they take their skates for sharpening, as very few people who sharpen hockey skates really understand what is required for figure skates. This is particularly important once the skaters are trying figure tests. Guards are essential, and are for use on the blades when walking on the skates on surfaces other than ice. (especially cement!) When the skater removes her skates before leaving the rink, she should remove the guards, wipe the blades dry with a chamois or soft cloth, and leave the guards off the blades until the next time she puts the skates on. Skiing R. By DAVE BIEMAN The subject for this week is one that concerns all skiers, and that is the matter of falling. Once you realize that you are in a situation that may lead to a fall, DON'T LOSE YOUR CONCENTRATION and keep these things in mind. Fiist of all try to simply sit down and use the extra drag to slow you down. If you don't have time for that, fall to one side, this will let your hips take shock and avoid the danger or your body getting ahead of your skis. In either case keep your knees together and your arms tucked in tight. This way you won't have something flailing around that might get twisted easily. It may seem like a contradiction but at the same time don't get too tense. Remember some of those terrible falls you see children take? Well they don't hurt themselves because they naturally remain limp as they fall. Now if you've survived the fall don't exhaust yourself trying to get up. Wait until you've calmed down, then place your skis across the hill, dig your edges in and slowly work your way up. One last comitent, if you can figure out exactly why you fell, it may not happen (that same way!) again,. The St. Louis goals were scored by Randy Parsons with two and Brian Clarke scored the other goal. he Montreal team flattened the North Stars 6-0. Paul Pooley confirmed the fact when he scored three goals in the last half hour. Paul scored four goals all together while Dennis Preszcator and Norm McCauley popped in singles. In Squirt hockey the boys did a great job, They scored eight goals altogether. Wayne Parsons scored twice while Jeff Fuller, Dave Robinson, Doug Hoffman, Preston Dearing, Bill Simmons and Phillip McLeod scored singles. This was one of the best games of the year. In Pee Wee hockey the Seals took a quick lead to defeat Detroit 5-3. Robert Heard scored three, while Ralph Batten and Ron Weber scored the other Seal goals. The Detroit goals were scored by Steven Willert, Brad Roelofson and John VanGerwen. Terry Ryckman played a terrific game in goal as his team the Panthers defeated the }Mies 5-3. The Blues put up a terrific fight in the dying minutes of the game as they scored two goals. Wally Fydenchuck and Ron Bowers scored two while Jim Bears open with a win Dashwood Bears opened their Western Ontario athletic association Intermediate "D" playoff series on the right note with a 9-5 win over Ripley at the Zurich arena, Sunday night. The second game will be played in Ripley Sunday with the third back in Zurich Tuesday, February 24 at 8:30. Bob Hoffman fired three successful shots to lead the Dashwood scoring attack in the opening win over Ripley. Checking in with two goals each were Jim Morrissey and Glenn Overholt while Pat McKeever and Brad Hamilton notched single scores. In the final game of the regular season, Friday, the Zurich Flyers edged the Dashwood club 9-7. 1111111111M111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111101111IMMiiii11111111111111111111111IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIE • — — — — — 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 57 57 14 64 43 CA (W.
