FOR ALE. GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh
School
champs
Congratulations are in order to numerous athletes
at South Huron District High School for their
achievements during the past couple of weeks.
Wednesday, the South Huron wrestling squad
under the direction of teachers Doug Ellison and Jack
Riddell not only won the Huron-Perth Conference team
championship but also placed five boys on the list of
classification champions.
The Western Ontario Secondary School
Association championships are being held Saturday m
Strathroy and coach Ellison is expecting to send 14
local wrestlers to compete.
In last week's Huron-Perth finals, Morley
Eagleson and Gerard Charrette retained their group
crowns picked up last year in the first year the local
school tried wrestling in actual competition.
Eagleson has now competed in two seasons of
Huron-Perth action and has yet to have a point scored
against him.
The success of the wrestling team at our local
high school is almost fantastic. The youngsters with
only one year of experience have also been more than
holding their own in exhibition matches and
tournaments against schools with a lot higher
enrollment.
Another popular sport at South Huron is curling
and two rinks will be representing the school at WOSSA
playoffs at the Ivanhoe in London on March 6 and 7.
Doug Webber skipped his rink to the Huron-Perth
boys title last week and Libby Mickle accomplished the
same feat with her group of girls.
While these youngsters display a lot of enthusiasm
and hard work in reaching these championships, there is
always an interested teacher in the background helping
to aid their progress.
In the case of the curlers it has been the quiet
words of advice and guidance from Miss Lauretta
Seigner and Ted Davies that has helped enormously.
Due to space restrictions, we expect pictures of
the two champion curling rinks will not appear until
next week.
A Good Day
Although attendance was not too encouraging,
the enthusiasm displayed by all the hockey players,
Saturday's Minor Hockey Day at the Exeter arena was a
huge success.
The day was topped off with an interesting and
exciting exhibition game between the junior Hawks and
a group of former Mohawks of the late 1950's.
When we said the players showed enthusiasm, we
meant it sincerely including every member of the
Mohawks. Although a few of them were not quite as
speedy as some fans remember they displayed lots of
determination.
We would like to say thanks to Bill Musser, Bob
Baynham, Alvin Willert and any others that were
instrumental in getting twenty Mohawks back in
uniform and they were back in uniform in real style. A
new set of sweaters for the junior Hawks arrived Friday
and they were christened by the Mohawks.
Banquets, Already
The banquet season got' off to a fairly early start
in Lucan Friday night when the Lucan Lions held their
annual feast for their house league hockey players and
their parents.
While each winning team receives a trophy at the
end of the season, the Lions Club hands out individual
awards to the most improved player on each team.
This gives every boy the same opportunity to win
a trophy regardless of their actual playing abilities.
The guest speaker at Monday's function was Doug
Whaley, sports director of radio station of CJOE in
London. The little fellow with the big voice handed out
good words of advice for the boys, especially his
remarks on the need of obtaining a proper education
and the ability to learn how to take a sports loss
gracefully.
We would like to thank Lions president Bob
Taylor and hockey chairman Clare Stanley for their fine
hospitality, Monday night.
South Huron Cagers
win only two games
One of the highlights of Saturday's annual Minor Hockey Day at the
Exeter arena was the selection of three stars for each of the six all-star
games. The accompanying pictures show the Exeter and former
Mohawk stars that were selected by the panel of judges. T-A photos.

Minor Hockey Day was
celebrated in Exeter Saturday
With a full day of activities that
drew a large crowd throughout
the afternoon and evening.
The day began with regular
house league hockey play in the
morning continued with five
exhibition all-star games in the
afternoon and early evening and
concluded with the feature
attraction, an exhibition game
between the current edition of
the Exeter Junior Hawks and
members of Mohawk teams of
the late 1950's.
Local dignitaries participating
in opening ceremonies and
three,star selections added to the
festivities.
Scores of the house league
games are reported in Alvin
Willert's Rec News column
appearing elsewhere on these
pages,
A total of twenty former
Mohawk performers returned
and held the junior Hawks to a
5.5 tie in a fast moving, exciting
contest.
The Mohawks proved that a
combination of experience and
four complete shifts was enough
to stay on an equal footing with
the younger Hawks who iced
only two complete line-ups.
Gar Baker and Dick McFalls
shared the Mohawk goal tending
chores and both turned in
excellent performances.
Former Exeter Rec director
Don "Boom" Gravett was the
top scorer for the Mohawks with
a two goal effort.
A slap shot specialist during
his Mohawk playing days,
Gravett fired both his goals on
good quick, wrist shots,
probably because of the extra
energy needed to draw the stick
back for a slap shot.
The younger Hawks jumped
into a quick two goal lead in the
early minutes of the game before
the Old-Timers were able to get
untracked.
Randy Parsons, the only two
goal scorer for the Hawks fired
the first successful shot at 3.13
on a play set up by defenceman
Barry Baynham.
Near the eight minute mark,
Steve Murley took a pass from
Ron Janke to up the score to
2-0.
Hawk manager Bob Baynham
playing for the Mohawks was the
first able to fire the puck past
John Hayter in the juniors net.
Baynham was parked right in
front of the net and popped in a
quick shot on a pass-out from
Mary Schantz and Bob
Westenhaufer.
Midway through the second
period, Randy Parsons scored his
second counter of the game on a
play started by John Braid and
Joe O'Rourke to give the Hawks
a 3-1 edge.
The Mohawks surged back to
tie the score before the second
period was completed. Ken Doig
notched the first marker with
Jim MacDonald aiding on the
play and Dave Weber knotted
the count on an unassisted
effort.
In a space of two minutes
early in the third period, Gravett
scored his two goals to put the
Mohawks out in front by a score
of 5.3.
Only a couple of minutes
later, Ron Moore, who lost part
of a tooth earlier in the game
scored unassisted and John Braid
fired the equalizer shortly after
to create the tie and send
everybody home satisfied with
the outcome.
The three stars of the game
