Farmer dies
in SH hospital
William John Alexander,
prominent farmer of Hay
Township passed away in South
Huron Hospital, Exeter, Sunday,
Febraury 15, following a lengthy
illness, in his 54th year.
Mr. Alexander is survived by
his wife, the former Mary Castle,
two sons Ross and Paul and two
daughters, Iris and Joan, all at
home; one brother, Norman,
Londesboro; four sisters, Miss
Isobel Alexander, Toronto, Mrs.
Cecil (Doris) Dining, London,
Mrs. Robert (Jean) Simpson,
Exeter, and • Miss Ruth
Alexander, London.
Mr. Alexander was always in
community affairs and was an
active member of Hensall United
Church.
Public funeral services were
conducted by Rev. Harold F.
Currie from the Bonthron
Funeral Home, February 18th,
with interment in Baird's
Cemetery.
The pallbearers were Bob
Rowcliffe, Harvey Keys, Jack
Peck, Jim Bengough, Harold
Jones and Alex McBeath.

daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. J.
Roberts, Kippen, has
successfully passed her
Registered Nurses' Assistant
Examination. Marian has
accepted a position with the
Bethesda Hospital, London and
is a graduate of Seaforth District
High School.

UCW quilt
Chiselhurst United Church
Women held their February
meeting in the Church Tuesday
preceded by a quilting and pot
luck dinner. President Mrs.
Russell Brock was in the chair.
Mrs. Jack Brintnell presented
the worship. A Dialogue "The
New President" was given with
roles taken by Mrs. Percy
Wright, Mrs. Alvin Cole, and
Mrs. Jack Brintnell.
Members will entertain
patients at Queensway Nursing
Home, Hensall, two afternoons a
week during the month of
March.
Mrs. T. Brintnell submitted a
report of the Presbyterial held at
Clinton.
The study "The
Reconciliation of a broken
world" was given, by Mrs. Harold
Parker.
Hensall UCW
hold meetings
Unit 1 of the UCW met
Thursday with Mrs. Christie
presiding and 12 members
present. Her devotional was
entitled "Meditations for Lent".
Miss Greta Lammie gave a
piano selection which was much
enjoyed. The study was given by
Mrs. Ken Elder on the "Indian
Canadians", followed with a
recording and quiz.
Members were reminded of
the general meeting in February,
the April Fool's Supper on April
1 and World Day of Prayer,
March 6 in St. Paul's Anglican
Church.
Mrs. Byran Kyle and her
assistants served lunch.
UNIT 4, UCW
The regular meeting of Unit 4
of UCW was held in Fellowship
Hall on Thursday with 25
members and one visitor present.
The president Mrs. James
McAllister presiding.
The devotional was given by
Miss Amy Lammie reading in
Braille the story of the "Prodigal
Son". Mrs. Laird Mickle played a
piano arrangement of the
familiar hymn "How Great Thou
Art".
An informative talk on "The
Canadian Indians" was well
presented by Mrs. Joseph Flynn.
Mrs. McAllister announced
the following dates to
remember: February 23, general
meeting for all units of UCW,
unit 2 in charge; March 17, start
of quilting; Unit 4 Easter
meeting, April 2.
Institute hold
euchre party
Hensall Women's Institute
sponsored a very successful
euchre party in the Legion Hall
Wednesday evening with 17
tables in play. The proceeds of
$64.25 will go to the Arena
renovations fund. President Mrs.
Clarence Reid spoke briefly and
extended a welcome to members
and guests.
The winners for euchre were:
ladies' high, Mrs. Winston
Workman, Exeter; low, Mrs. E.
Schroeder, RR 2 Hensall; lone
hands, Mrs. Edna Caldwell,
Exeter; men's high, John Deeves,
Hensall; low, A. Thamendyk, RR
3 Kippen; lone hands, John
Deeves, Hensall.
Jim McEwen of Hensall won
the draw for a basket of
groceries and winner of the
second draw was Mrs. Margaret
Ingrain, Hensall. Reeve Oliver
Jaques drew the lucky tickets.
Compete for
public speech
A public speaking contest was
held at the Legion Hall Hensall
Monday evening with eleven
pupils participating from Hensall
and Zurich Public Schools.
Mrs. Vic Stan, president of
the Legion Ladies Auxiliary,
who sponsored the project was
chairlady for the evening.
The winners were; Senior
Groups, 1st, Elizabeth Deichert,
Grade 7, Zurich Public School;
2nd, Joan Forrest, Grade 8,
Hensall Public School; 3rd, Joan
Goddard, Grade 8, Bengali
Public School.
Junior group, 1st, Kevin
Wareing, Grade 6, Hensall Public
School; 2nd, Kim Hendrick,
Grade 6, Zurich Public School;
3rd, Barbara Dietrich, Grade 6,
Zurich Public School.
Mr. and Mrs. Mike Soldan,
and Mrs. Doug Warren were the
judges.
First place winners will
advance to the finals in
Lucknow February 21st.
Kinettes view
Spain scenery
The Kinette Club met at the
home of Mrs. A. Scholl
Wednesday evening with several
guests present, Mrs. Jack
Drysdale presented Mrs. Ken
Pollock with a Kinette pin and
by-laws and welcomed her into
the club.
After a brief business session
Mr. and Mrs. Scholl showed
slides on their visit to Spain.
Mrs. Wm. Fuss presented Mrs.
Scholl with a gift for
entertaining the club and their
guests in her home.

Hospital, where she underwent
surgery this week.

Bradley have moved to the
residence they recently
purchased on the Third
Concession of Hay. They were
presented with a gift from their
neighbors. Bert Horton made the

Diamond jubilee
for guiding
Hensall Guides and
Brownies are marking the
Diamond Jubilee of Guiding in
Canada with a display in a
window on Main Street, showing
aims and aspects of their work.
Sunday the Girls and their
leaders will attend service at the
United Church.

met for their regular meeting
Tuesday with 21 members
present. Mrs. Nelson Baker
opened with musical selections.
The president, Mrs. Ken
Parkinson gave a reading on
Brotherhood Week and gave a
report on the Presbyterial
meeting held in Clinton.
An invitation was received
from the Kirkton United Church
Women to join with them for
the World Day of Prayer Service,
March 6 at 8 p.m.
Mrs. Oliver Baker and Mrs.
Margaret Baker were in charge of
the Worship Service, the theme
being "Love and Stewardship."
Mrs. Oliver Baker read the
Scripture to a musical
accompaniment and also gave a
reading on "Love and
Stewardship."
Mrs. Fred Parkinson and Mrs.
Nelson Baker put on a play
called "Dollar's Worth of Love".
MESSENGERS
The Messengers held their
regular monthly meeting Sunday
with 23 members present.
Pamela Rodd opened the
meeting with quiet music.
The president, Karen Insley
conducted the meeting, the
theme being "Love". The
Messenger Motto, was repeated in
unison.
Michele Robinson and Paul
Brine led in worship. Lori Webb
gave a reading followed by a
duet by Margaret and Janet
Parkinson, Mrs. Lloyd Cowdrey
read a story and the study book
was given by Mrs. John Rodd. •
