Exeter's three minor hockey
teams competing in Ontario
Minor Hockey Association
playoffs got off on the right foot
in the first games of
best-of-three series against teams
from St. Marys.
On Exeter ice, Thursday, the
Exeter bantams scored twice in
overtime to edge the St. Marys
club 3-1.
Saturday, also at the local
arena, the Exeter pee wees edged
out a 2-1 decision and the
Exeter midgets scored a 3-1
victory,
The three local clubs were in
St. Marys last night, Wednesday
for the return contests.
Haugh opened the game
scoring at 3.37 on a play started
by Ron Lindenfield and Barry
Baynham but in the next three
minutes Lambeth had taken a
2-1 lead.
Brian Abbey tied the score at
5.32 with Gary Gavey assisting
and only a few seconds later,
Abbey scored unassisted.
Just past the halfway mark of
the first period, Mike Mortensen
shot Belmont into a 3-1 lead on
a play set up by Dave Leslie.
Before the first period ended
Haugh fired his second
successful shot of the night with
Steve Murley assisting.
Late in the second period,
Ron Lindenfield picked up a
pass from Ron Janke and raced
in to beat Bob Bishop in the
Belmont net to tie the game at
3-3 and end the scoring for the
night.
elapsed in the second session,
Randy Parsons tied the score on
an unassisted effort. Near the
halfway mark, Clarke Taylor put
the Sunsets in front again.
Four minutes later Exeter
defenceman Rick Schell again
tied the count with the last score
for his team for the night.
Brian Abbey fired what
proved to be the winning goal
for Belmont at the seventeen
minute mark of the period and
Mortson added an insurance
marker two minutes later.
The Hawks were assessed 13
of the 23 penalties called during
the night.
HAUGH SCORES TWICE
Larry Haugh, who continues
to lead the Hawk scoring
counted two goals in the first
period Friday as the Hawks were
holding the Belmont club to a
3.3 draw.
Saturday should be one of the biggest days of the
year at the Exeter arena when. Minor Hockey Day will
be observed,
This is the chance parents, relatives, neighbours
and friends have to see all participants of the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association in action,
A. total of eleven games have been scheduled
starting with house league play at nine in the morning
and concluding with the feature exhibition game
between the Exeter Junior Hawks and a group of former
Mohawk players of more than ten years ago at 8:30,
Bill Musser and Bob Baynham who have been in
charge of notifying the ex-Mohawk performers told us
Monday that 22 of the 28 players contacted would be
on hand for the big game.
In addition to regular house league play, the
all-star minor teams will be playing against teams from
other centres. The complete schedule for Saturday is
listed in an advertisement elsewhere on these pages.
We hope the arena will be a busy spot on
Saturday with every parent out to see their youngster in
action during the day. This is our one chance in the year
not only to give vocal but financial support to the
Exeter Minor Hockey Association and the faithful
coaches and managers that get very little credit for a lot of
time and money spent during the winter months.
Fans can expect to see three goalies in action,
Exeter's own Dick McFalls will definitely be back,
Buddy Dietrich reports he is ready to go if he can
borrow the pads he sold a few years ago and Gar Baker,
who is still seeing some action with the Seaforth Beavers
has not made verification but is expected to perform.
Defencernen that will be on skates are Jack
Dwyer, Earl Barton, Dave Weber, Doug Smith, Bob
White and Bob Coates. Doug Thiel had not confirmed
his presence at time of this writing.
Among the front line performers will be Frank
Anderson, John Anderson, Mary Schantz, Ray Richards,
Bob Baynham, Red Loader, Bill Musser, Larry
Heideman, Andy Sararas, Bill Wharmsby, Don Gravett,
Ken Doig, Jim Russell, Murray Brintnell, Bill Oberle and
Cy Blommaert.
Provincial Treasurer, C. S. MacNaughton, Huron
MP Bob McKinley and Huron Warden Roy Westcott are
expected to be on hand to add to the official
ceremonies preceding the big exhibition match.
The Minor Hockey Committee suggests that every
minor hockey coach might well decide early what his
objectives are.
We further suggest that the GOOD COACH, the
coach who is sincerely interested in the welfare of boys,
will try to make sure that every boy has fun; that they
are reminded constantly that they are playing a game,
and that play and games means having fun. Then add
instruction in sportmanship and good citizenship.
When these lessons have been learned, the boys
will be ready for further teaching of the fundamentals
of hockey.

Although the Exeter Hawks
were only able to come with one
point in two Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" games
over the past week, they still
hold a six point lead at the top
of the standings.
The Hawks were held to a 3-3
tie by the Belmont Sunsets in
Exeter, Friday night and
dropped a 5-3 decision to the
same club in Belmont, Sunday.
With four games to go, the
Hawks have a total of 39 points,
but the fast closing Lucan Irish
have moved up with 33 points.
Belmont is in third spot, another
point behind.
The two most important
games of the season for the two
top clubs are being played this
week. The Hawks were in Lucan
last night, Wednesday and the
Irish will be right back in Exeter,
Friday night.
NEVER RECOVER
In Belmont, Sunday, the
Sunsets scored two quick goals
in the first three minutes of play
and the Hawks although they
were able to tie the score twice
were never able to move in
front.
Kevin' Landon and Mike

Belmont counters while Ron

Well Done, Students
We would like to pass on our congratulations to
the Student Council and all students at South Huron
District High School for their enthusiastic support of
the first Winter Carnival at the school.
Staff member Bruce Shaw, who helped
co-ordinate the entire program told us a few days before
the event that the council was prepared to suffer a loss
of up to five hundred dollars on the weekend.
To Bruce's and our surprise, a profit of well over
seven hundred dollars was realized and this money is
being turned over in its entirety to three charitable
organizations.
We spent most of Friday night at the school,
catching only a couple of cat naps during the early
morning hours and were very impressed with the
behaviour of the students, despite a few rumours that
have been flying around this week, obviously started by
people that were sound asleep when the young people
were playing basketball and enjoying themselves.
We were able to catch several interesting shots of
very tired students and teachers taken somewhere in
the neighbourhood of five in the morning. Some of
these appear elsewhere in this issue.
Our only disappointment over the weekend was
the lack of support by the teaching staff at South
Huron. We have heard teachers in the past say they are
unable to get the students interested in projects. This
Was a case of the shoe being on the other foot.
With a staff of 57 teachers, we never saw more
than six at any one time and doubt very much if more
than one- fifth put in art appearance either, Friday or
Saturday.

SCORE IN THIRD
A goal late in the third period
from the stick of Steve
Schroeder enabled the Exeter
pee wees to gain their 2-1 win
over St. Marys in Saturday's,
opening game.
Schroeder took a pass from
Tom Hayter to fire the winning
goal.
The local kids opened the
scoring halfway through the first
period on a goal by Brian Taylor
with Howard Schenk assisting.
Paul Grasby of St. Marys tied
the count in the second session.
Reverses in
Ausable loop
Boston has been flying the
last two weeks. They have had
only two goals scored against
them while scoring twenty-four.
This week they defeated the
North Stars 9.1. Brian Horrell
got four, Brad Taylors three and
Randy Fisher and Brian Mercer
one each. Torn Van Gerwen
broke Mike Brintnell's shutout,
by scoring the only North Star
goal with ten minutes left.
The second game was close
with Montreal defeating St.
Louis 2-1 in the final minutes.
Paul Pooley scored both
Montreal goals. Brian Clarke
scored the single St. Louis goal,
In squirt hockey, Paul Geiser

Robinson scored a single goal,

The Exeter midgets scored
two unanswered goals in the
second period and held off
the opposition to post a 3-1 win
over St. Marys in the second half
of Saturday's twin bill.
Robbie Lindenneld and Peter
Kleinstiver were the firstperiod
marksmen to put the Exeter
club safely out in front.
Randy Preszcator upped the
home club lead to three goals in
the first minute of the final
period and Murray Pic kel
notched the only St. Marys
marker later in the period.
For those who are newcomers
to the area or too young to
remember possibly an
explanation of the Mohawks is
necessary.
From 1953 to about 1959
the feature team here at the
Arena were the Mohawks. From
1953-1955 the Mohawks played
in Intermediate 13' classification,
then in 1956 the team stepped
one notch higher and entered
Intermediate 'A' company.
That year the Mohawks were
eliminated in the Ontario finals
by the Sundridge Beavers. The
following year the team entered
into Senior 'B' ranks with teams
such as St. Thomas, Sarnia and
Woodstock.
Some twenty players from.
:hese former Mohawk teams will
be here on Saturday night to
play against this year's Junior
Hawks.
The Minor Hockey Day
