the National Farmers Union
stressed the need for one
national organization by saying
"If the farmer thinks he can deal
with a provincial group he's
kidding himself."
Miller went on to say, "We
must put farmers across this
country together and then
bargain collectively. Let's make
Agri-business want what we
have."
"We're building the biggest,
most important organization,
the only people that can stop us
are the farmers. The only holdup
can come from within.
Let's cut through ethnic and
political traditions that have
divided us for 100 years. The
solution is getting involved. We
need a lot of people to do a little
work."
Miller supported the
Canadian Wheat Board by
saying, "It's superior to any of
the others, it's an orderly market
versus the law of the jungle."
The guest speaker claimed
that companies selling feeds,
fertilizers and other materials to
the farmer are related to
elevators and packers that buy
the farm product.
He said "The basic decision
of what a farmer pays and what
he gets for his saleable product
are made in the same board
room. The large companies are
manipulating the markets."
Miller advocates one Farm
Union constitution across
Canada with everybody
operating on the same structure,
He said each province is
trying to prop up its farm
economy without regard to it's
next door neighbour.
When asked if he expected
quotes on farm products in the
future, Miller said, "No, I think
there will be enough shortages as
long as we can produce with self
discipline.
At the close of the meeting,
Miller and District 2 director
Lorne Luther called for
nominations for an interim
executive for the South Huron
local.
It is expected a charter for
the local will be presented in
two or three months when a full
slate of officers will be elected..
Named to the temporary
executive were Vincent Doyle,
Richard Ayotte and Lloyd
Willett, flay township; Jan
Laporte, Stanley; Melvin Orel),
Stephen; and Alvie Lovell;
Usborne.

The guest speaker, Lex
Rutherford, a beef cattle

tradition and sentiment
associated with beef cattlemen
has been nothing but a ball and
chain around the beef industry
that must be broken soon if the
industry is to progress.
Mr. Rutherford suggested the
introduction of synthetic meats
during the next few years should
be of great concern to beef
producers. He told them the
1970s will be a period of
readjustment with "much pain
to bear."
He said strong guidance will
be needed to achieve those
things that producers want and
out of this may come some
long-term programs to aid the
industry and prevent substitutes
from taking over the market.
