Per Pkge, 1044 11 Have you been reading all the science-fiction on the Women's- pages of the dailies lately? I mean, the hot news in fashions as it is flashed across the world from the houses of high style in Paris, Rome, New York and Los Angeles, It's the biggest bunk and the greatest fraud imaginable The farce was kicked off by Ruth Gernreich's (of topless bathing suit fame) show featuring the Unisex. look, His models, both male and female, nude from the tops of their smoothly shaven heads and eyebrows, to the tips of their bare little toes were supposed to portray a look-a-like' look which Mr. Gernreich predicts for the '70's, Well, I've got news for old Rudi. 'He' may not be able to tell the difference in his stripped down models but there are still quite a few of us who can notice the difference! I must admit, though, I see some advantages in having one's head shaved. If an unexpected invitation arrived for dinner you'd never have that worry about your hair looking like a bunch of old paint brushes sticking out the wrong way from a can. You could just whistle into the bathroom zip over your pate lightly with a razor and there you'd be . . . just gorgeous, with your bald dome glowing softly and seductively in the candle light at dinner. It's a good thing nobody's taking Rudi Gernreich very seriously. One hates to even imagine the ominious results if we followed his nude-bald look. National and international disaster would no doubt follow with the stock market tumbling, export and trade becoming unbalanced, the fashion industry and wig manufacturers thrown into complete disaster, trade union riots, beauty operator picket lines, and heaven only knows what else, However, Mr. G. has made one hopeful prediction, "Long, brightly printed craftans with flowing sleeves and high collars for old people." That's tremendous news! In fact, it's almost unbelievable that at last someone is remembering 'my group', It almost makes me hurnble in, my gratitu de. The fashion industry of the '60's seemed geared to deliberately defraud and ignore anyone who wasn't very young and bone-thin. Shopping for a dress these past few years has oft times left me as hysterical and giddy as that dumb ostrich that sprints frantically around on television looking for the yellow pages. Ruth, love, I'm in the market right this minute for one of those little craftan jobs if you'd care to whip one up. You see, where I .used to have shape t now have lumps and when my teenage sore (smart aleck kid). informs me I look like a sackful of rubber balls bouncing around the house get to admit I'm over the hill, While the other salons scoff at Ruth's bomb they continue to vie each other to see who can produce the most outlandish outfit. However, when one sifts through all the chaff there seems to be a firm idea emerging. If one can believe the tonier fashion guides the 'New Look' which became the 'Old Look' is going to be the 'New Look' once again. Those of us who were around after the last war can vividly recall the exciting days when Dior' introduced the long, swirling skirts that skimmed just below our calves. It caused a regular explosion of furor after the austerity of war-year clothes which were rationed, and styled strictly for utility. Whether we like it or not it's MISS DOREEN BAKER, R.N. Doreen Baker R.N. to speak at S. H. H. Miss Doreen Baker, Grand Bend, will be the guest speaker at South Huron Hospital Auxiliary, February 10. Miss Baker is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. W. B. Baker and received her R.N. at Victoria Hospital, London. She nursed at South Huron Hospital for some time, did post graduate work at Winnipeg, and for ten years was supervisor in the operation room at Victoria Hospital. Two years ago Miss Baker went to Malaysia under the auspices of Care Incorporate where she was part of a team sent to a district hospital in N.W, Malaysia. While there she helped establish a surgical service and trained operating room staff in surgical techniques. a good bet hems are going down, down, down. And wouldn't you know it when Pd got up the courage to whack mine off at a scandalous height My daughters insisted was 'a decent length.' Thank goodness, I had the foresight to save the footage we cut off and if I sew it back on and add a ruffle or two I may still be able to make do with my clothes yet awhile, One good thing, the youngsters won't have to throw away their miniskirts . . they can use them for wide belts on their new flowing frocks. • There's a book hot off the press, called "I Haven't a Thing to Wear," by Judith Keith. It's a fun book but packed with common sense as to what we wear and how to wear it. Here are a few quotes: "It isn't what we have, it's what we do with what we do have that counts. "It doesn't matter what's in. If it's wrong for you it's out. I gave up wearing belts two inches ago. "No mini skirts on maxi-mums. "No shorts, stretch slacks or bikinis if hips and legs am beyond the point of no return .. . most overweight or mature women in pants should be equipped with a rear view mirror. (Amen) "Nothing ages a woman more than trying to look too young. "Remember that black absorbs light and is great for the figure. It should be livened and lightened as close to the face as possible with white or colors. "Basic clothes are canvas on which we imprint our personalities and with which we create many new moods. Basic clothes make life easy." Basic accessories to Judith Keith mean lots of scarves in all colors, patterns and fabrics, a string of pearls, a good gold pin and small tailored gold earrings. Says Miss Keith, "With three basic dresses, a suit, a basic coat, a hat, a handful of scarves and jewelry , three pairs of shoes and a headful of ideas you can travel around the world. * * Although February is a short month it is often a dreary time. And how much more dreary it is for the shut-in who cannot get out and relieve the mohotony of looking at the same four walls day after day. Why don't we all make a special effort to remember the shut-ins in our lives this month. Let's all take a pledge to visit at least one shut-in or elderly person each week for the rest of the winter. Not only will we add a little synthetic sunshine to their lives but we'll add to our own pleasure and feeling of well-being as well. Trivitt A. C. W. to pack bale The February meeting of Trivitt Memorial ACW was held Tuesday in the home of Mrs. G. R. Doidge, The meeting was opened with a hymn and prayers led by Mrs. A. Carter. Mrs. T. Monteith then introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. J. Doerr, who gave an interesting and in formative presentation entitled "My Experience with Clay". Her comparison of potters shaping clay to parents shaping children was enlightening and inspiring, and the accompanying display of pottery was lovely. Mrs. Doerr was thanked by Mrs. IL Flaro and Mrs. E. Gibson. Mrs. Gibson opened the business meeting and reported that the Senior Citizens had been guests at a euchre party in January which was thoroughly enjoyed and that another party is being planned for this month. The annual Shrove Tuesday supper will be held in the Parish Hall and a new and varied menu has been prepared, including the traditional pancakes. The meal is to be followed by a progressive euchre. A future bus trip is in the planning, date and destination to be announced later. Mrs. G. Anderson outlined the purpose and aims of ACW and reported that the Huron Mrs. Stewart Miner, RR 3, Exeter was elected president of the Huron-Perth Presbyterial of the United Church Women at the organization's third annual meeting at Wesley-Willis United Church, Clinton, last week.
