Carnival
a t SHDHS
The facilities of South Huron District High
School will be the scene of another Winter Carnival this
corning weekend,
The students have come up with some novel and
nnique ideas that are sure to entertain themselves,
friends and their parents.
Activities will get underway at 2:30 Friday
afternoon and continue until late Saturday night.
When we say continue; we mean exactly that,
continuously. More than 150 students, both boys and
girls have signified their intention of participating in a
24-hour basketball marathon in the new gym.
- Starting at 7;30 Friday night each of the twelve
organized teams will play for a half hour every three
hours until Saturday night at the same time.
The carnival actually gets on its way Friday
afternoon with a broomball game slated for the arena at
2:30 with Grade 13 students taking on members of the
teaching staff,
Also Friday night a dance will be held in the old
gymnasium The Talismen will be providing the music.
Among the unusual events slated for Saturday
will be judging of the icicle-growing contest. Contestants
will be allowed to use any method of forming icicles.
We only hope the weatherman will co-operate
with colder weather. Some students have great ideas for
patterns and colors in this competition that includes
several categories.
Another feature Saturday will be a pancake-eating
contest with the home economic classes providing the
necessary food supplies.
Outside the school, toboggan, snow shoe and
snowmobile races will be staged along with judging of
snow sculpturing.
Six buses will be running from the main areas,
namely Grand Bend, Zurich, Hensall, Dashwood,
Crediton and Huron Park to have students at the school
by ten o'clock, Saturday morning.
Former Mohawks Ready
Plans are going well for a proposed exhibition
hockey game between former Exeter Mohawks and the
current edition of the junior Hawks.
The game will be the wind-up to Minor Hockey
Day, February 14 at 8:30.
Most of the 'old' Mohawks that have been
contacted are more than willing to return to the local
hockey scene for a one-night stand.
Playoffs Start
Three of Exeter's minor hockey teams will be
heading down the Ontario Minor Hockey Association
playoff trail this week,
Tonight, Thursday, the St. Marys bantams will be
at the Exeter arena to take on the Exeter Legion
bantams in the first game of a best-of-three series. Game
time in 6:30.
Saturday night, the St. Marys pee weer will be in
for a 7:30 contest with the local boys, 12 and under
with the midget clubs from the two towns meeting at
8:45.
All three clubs have been faring well in regular
Shamrock league play and fans are ensured of exciting
action this weekend.
Exciting Wrestling On Tap
The South Huron District High School
gymnasiums will be the scene of the annual Huron-Perth
Conference championships, Wednesday of next week.
Doug Ellison, coach of the local school team
reports that at least seven and possibly eight teams will
be in attendance to compete for both overall team and
individual titles.
The local grappling squad went through the
season undefeated in Conference play for the second
consecutive year and stand a good chance in taking a
good portion of the championships.
The general public will be more than welcome to
attend the championship bouts and admission is free.
Preliminary events will start in the morning with the
finals slated to start about 2:30 in the afternoon.
Chances of the South Huron team were dimmed
slightly by the untimely injury to Jim Morlock, a
valuable member of the squad. Jim suffered a mild
concussion in God erich, Tuesday afternoon and we
would like to wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

BOTTLE UP BEAVERS
The reason for the Tigers
success in holding the high flying
Beavers to a tie Sunday was their
ability to tie up their visitors in
their own end and not allow
them to get good rushes
organized.
The most persistent checking
display of the afternoon was put
on early in the third period by
Ken Fraser of the Tigers. Fraser
stopped two Seaforth players
inside their own blue line, took
the puck away from them and
moved in to put his club in front
5-4.
The first period ended in a tie
with Murray Henderson scoring
for Seaforth and Bob Gruper
replying for the Tigers with less
than a minute to go.
At 3.10 of the second session,
Fraser shot the Crediton boys in
front 2-1 as he was in the right
position in front of the Seaforth
net to pounce on a rebound on a
shot by Brian Warren.
In the last ten minutes of the
period, the visiting Beavers went
to work and scored three times
on goals by Bob Beutenmiller,
Wayne Rau and Henderson.
With less than two minutes to
go, Terry Bourne found the
scoring range for Crediton
flipping in a rebound after the
puck had been held in the
Seaforth end for a couple of
minutes. Bob Pinter and Craig
Chapman assisted on Bourne's
score.
At 2.50 of the final frame,
Gary Parsons fired a hard wrist
shot from the left point that
dented the Seaforth twine to tie
the score at 4-4.
Fraser's well earned goal put
