Activities will get underway at 2:30 Friday afternoon and continue until late Saturday night. When we say continue; we mean exactly that, continuously. More than 150 students, both boys and girls have signified their intention of participating in a 24-hour basketball marathon in the new gym. - Starting at 7;30 Friday night each of the twelve organized teams will play for a half hour every three hours until Saturday night at the same time. The carnival actually gets on its way Friday afternoon with a broomball game slated for the arena at 2:30 with Grade 13 students taking on members of the teaching staff, Also Friday night a dance will be held in the old gymnasium The Talismen will be providing the music. Among the unusual events slated for Saturday will be judging of the icicle-growing contest. Contestants will be allowed to use any method of forming icicles. We only hope the weatherman will co-operate with colder weather. Some students have great ideas for patterns and colors in this competition that includes several categories. Another feature Saturday will be a pancake-eating contest with the home economic classes providing the necessary food supplies. Outside the school, toboggan, snow shoe and snowmobile races will be staged along with judging of snow sculpturing. Six buses will be running from the main areas, namely Grand Bend, Zurich, Hensall, Dashwood, Crediton and Huron Park to have students at the school by ten o'clock, Saturday morning. Former Mohawks Ready Plans are going well for a proposed exhibition hockey game between former Exeter Mohawks and the current edition of the junior Hawks. The game will be the wind-up to Minor Hockey Day, February 14 at 8:30. Most of the 'old' Mohawks that have been contacted are more than willing to return to the local hockey scene for a one-night stand. Playoffs Start Three of Exeter's minor hockey teams will be heading down the Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoff trail this week, Tonight, Thursday, the St. Marys bantams will be at the Exeter arena to take on the Exeter Legion bantams in the first game of a best-of-three series. Game time in 6:30. Saturday night, the St. Marys pee weer will be in for a 7:30 contest with the local boys, 12 and under with the midget clubs from the two towns meeting at 8:45. All three clubs have been faring well in regular Shamrock league play and fans are ensured of exciting action this weekend. Exciting Wrestling On Tap The South Huron District High School gymnasiums will be the scene of the annual Huron-Perth Conference championships, Wednesday of next week. Doug Ellison, coach of the local school team reports that at least seven and possibly eight teams will be in attendance to compete for both overall team and individual titles. The local grappling squad went through the season undefeated in Conference play for the second consecutive year and stand a good chance in taking a good portion of the championships. The general public will be more than welcome to attend the championship bouts and admission is free. Preliminary events will start in the morning with the finals slated to start about 2:30 in the afternoon. Chances of the South Huron team were dimmed slightly by the untimely injury to Jim Morlock, a valuable member of the squad. Jim suffered a mild concussion in God erich, Tuesday afternoon and we would like to wish him a speedy and complete recovery. The Tiremen and Park now each have a season point total of 13. In the other half of the twin bill, Snell's Shell Whipped the Bank Boys 7-2. Snell's are in third spot with eight points while the Bankers trail in the basement with four points to their credit. A two goal performance turned in by Jack Glover led Newby Tire to their 4.3 win over Huron Park. The winners scoring total was completed by single oafs from the sticks of Jim cDonald and Bob McDonald. Scoring in single fashion for Huron Park were Bill Andrews, Frank Boyle and Don Appleby. Larry Willed connected for three goals to lead the Snell's scoring attack in the 7.2 win over the Bank Boys. Single goals were fired by Don Heywood, Pete Mason, Vic Fulcher and Hans Zeehuisen. Bob Jones and Dean McKnight were the marksmen for the Bank Boys. With six games remaining in the regular schedule of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" grouping the Exeter Hawks continue in first place with a nine point lead over the second place Lucan Irish. The Lucan club has five games remaining on their schedule. The Hawks came up with a 10-7 win over the Mitchell Hawks at the Exeter arena, Friday night in their only action of the week. The Exeter club has a total of 38 points, Lucan has a 29 point record, the Belmont Sunsets are in third spot with 28 points and the Zurich Dominions follow in fourth spot with a 25 point total. The Hawks next see league action on home ice Friday night against the Belmont Sunsets. They are dated for a return game in Belmont, Sunday and travel to Lucan, Wednesday to take on the Irish Six. SCORE EARLY The local Hawks scored five times in the first twelve minutes against Mitchell Friday without a reply and looked as if they were on the way toga lopsided •victory. Mitchell bounced back. to outscore the hane „eliab by four goals to two in the second period and late in the final frame came within one goal of getting on even terms. Defenceman Joe O'Rourke started the game scoring with a blue line drive at 4.50 with Bob Rowe helping in the play. Less than four minutes later Larry Haugh whipped in a long shot on an unassisted effort. In a space of nine seconds near the halfway mark of the initial session, the Hawks scored Craig ups lead in rec loop play Ailsa Craig upped their first place lead in the Ausable Valley Rec hockey league to five points by trouncing Brinsley 11-3 while second place Shipka was being held to a 7-7 tie by the cellar dwelling Lieury club. The Craig team has a total of 20 points, Shipka has 15 points while Brinsley and Lieury follow with thirteen and seven points, respectively. Harvey Vincent scored no less than four goals to head the Shipka scoring in the 7-7 deadlock with Lieury. Paul Vincent was next in line with a two goal effort while Rene Boogemans added a single score. Harry Martin was the only two goal scorer for Lieury. Checking in with one goal apiece were Doug. Mawson, Sonny Slater, Lewis Slater, Bill Morley and Dirkson. Gwyn Griffiths gained a hat trick for his night's work in heading the Ailsa Craig scoring machine. Wayne McAlpine and Charlie Eedy were close behind with two goals each while John Scbenkel, Bob Duncan, Dave Collins and George Lee notched singletons. Jim Thompson's two goal effort was best for Brinsley with Doug Lee adding the third counter. Junior Hockey Wed., Feb. 11 8:30 exit Lucan Arena Exeter VS Lucan Irish twice. Rick Schell fired the first with Larry Laye and Bob Parsons assisting and Laye notched the next with Schell and Ron Janke providing the assistance. Mike Hoy completed the first period scoring with a solo goal at 12.15 with his team enjoying a one man advantage. Larry Laye scored the only two Exeter goals of the second period to pick up a hat trick for his night's work while the visitors from Mitchell were scoring four times to get a little closer. Charlie Pickard, Randy Duffy, Glenn Nicholson and The wrestling team at South Huron District High School completed their second consecutive undefeated regular season in Huron-Perth Conference action by edging Goderich 29-27 in the lakeport town, Tuesday afternoon. • Thursday of last week, the locallnatmen downed St, Marys by a decisive 43-21 ,count to keep their unbeaten string going. The Huron-Perth championships will be staged at the South Huron gym in Exeter Wednesday, February 11 with wrestlers from seven and possibly eight schools competing for team and individual championships. The elimination rounds are expected to get underway at eleven in the morning with the finals dated for 2:30 in the afternoon. The general public is invited to attend these championships and admission is free. WRESTLER INJURED The chances of the South Huron team in the Conference championships were dimmed somewhat, Tuesday afternoon in Goderich when Jim Morlock wrestling in the 193-pound class was injured. Morlock, a Crediton area youngster suffered a mild concussion and has been told by his doctor to stay out of contact sports for at least a year. The South Huron win over Goderich was assured when Dan Shoebottom pinned his opposition at three minutes of the last match of the program in the unlimited class. Other South Huron wrestlers winning by a pin were Bill Degroot, Gerard Charrette and Doug Geoffrey. Winning by a decision were Peter Sereda, Gary Lavier and Tom Prout. Against St. Marys, seven local grapplers won their matches by pinning their opposition, They Jurrie Hoestraka were the Mitchell goal getters. Early in the third period, Ron Janke and Bill Walkom of the visitors traded goals to maintain the Exeter margin of three goals. Nicholson and Dave Chessell scored for Mitchell and cut the Exeter lead to 8-7. With less than a minute to go, Larry Haugh fired his second goal of the night with Steve Murley and Ron Lindenfield helping out and Murley put the clincher on the contest with only eighteen seconds to go in the game by finding the scoring range. were Peter Sereda, Gerard Charrette, Doug Geoffrey, Gary Gibson, Morley Eagleson, Tom Prout and Jim Morlock. Little change in curling - As a result of the latest action in the second draw of the Exeter men's curling club only one change took place in the leadership of the three divisions. In Tuesday action, Gerald Prout and his rink have moved in front with a total of 34 points. Clarence Down is in second spot with 29 points. Ray Murley and his contingent continue to lead the Monday division with 46 points, one more than runner-up Ross Hodgert. Lorne Passmore's rink is on top of the Thursday section with 37 points. The Tigers downed the Clinton. Colts 5-3 in Clinton, Thursday and held the league leading Seaforth Beavers to a 5-5 tie at Huron Park, Sunday afternoon. Crediton now has a total of 26 points and are safely entrenched in third place in the league standings and are ensured of a playoff berth. The Crediton boys will be idle until Sunday night at $:30 when they take on the Listowel Vets in an $:30 contest at the Huron Park arena, BOTTLE UP BEAVERS The reason for the Tigers success in holding the high flying Beavers to a tie Sunday was their ability to tie up their visitors in their own end and not allow them to get good rushes organized. The most persistent checking display of the afternoon was put on early in the third period by Ken Fraser of the Tigers. Fraser stopped two Seaforth players inside their own blue line, took the puck away from them and moved in to put his club in front 5-4. The first period ended in a tie with Murray Henderson scoring for Seaforth and Bob Gruper replying for the Tigers with less than a minute to go. At 3.10 of the second session, Fraser shot the Crediton boys in front 2-1 as he was in the right position in front of the Seaforth net to pounce on a rebound on a shot by Brian Warren. In the last ten minutes of the period, the visiting Beavers went to work and scored three times on goals by Bob Beutenmiller, Wayne Rau and Henderson. With less than two minutes to go, Terry Bourne found the scoring range for Crediton flipping in a rebound after the puck had been held in the Seaforth end for a couple of minutes. Bob Pinter and Craig Chapman assisted on Bourne's score. At 2.50 of the final frame, Gary Parsons fired a hard wrist shot from the left point that dented the Seaforth twine to tie the score at 4-4. Fraser's well earned goal put No change in dart lead The Hairpins came up with three points in Friday's regular play in the Exeter Legion mixed dart league and upped their season total to 64. The Sharpshooters came up with the same amount of points to continue their hold on second spot, four points back of the leaders. The Dart Sharks and Dark Angels are deadlocked in third place with 56 points apiece. The Turtles are in fifth spot with 53 points and the Cleaners follow with 49 points. John Link has a total of 34 games won to hold a considerable margin in the men's single department while Gerry Edington's top score of 180 has not been challenged. On the ladies side of the ledger, Maddy Wells has a high score of 147 and Ann Romaniuk continues to lead in games won with 18.
