William Middleton passed
away at South Huron Hospital,
January 30, 1970 in his. 74th
year.
He is survived by his wife,
Ella Washburn, his son and
daughter-in-law, Gary and
Shirley Middleton and
Also
Linda and Janet.
O Also serviving are two sisters in
England.
Mr. Middleton was born in
Nottingham, England and served
with the Imperial Army in the
First World War.
He came to Canada in 1923,
purchased a bakery in Exeter in
iil 1927 and for 20 years operated
Middleton's Bakery.
After selling the bakery he
became a partner in the
Middleton and Genttner Oil
business for 16 years. He retired
in 1968 after having spent 41
years in business in Exeter.
Mr. Middleton was a member
of Trivitt Memorial Church and
served the church in many
capacities. He also served as a
member of Town Council and
the School Board of Trustees.
He was a life member and
Past Master of Lebanon Forest
Lodge No. 133 AF&AM and a
member and Past Noble Grand
of IOOF Lodge No. 67.
He was also a past president
of the Exeter Branch of the
Canadian Legion.
The funeral was conducted
from the Hopper-Hockey
Funeral Home, Exeter where
Rev, G, A. Anderson officiated
at the service, February 2.
The pallbearers were Junior
Doupe, Ray Smith, Reginald
Clinton, Wilfred Yake, Lloyd
Searle and Clayton Hanna.
Members of the Legion, Andy
Easton, Ted Pooley, Louis Day,
Jackson Woods and Cliff
Brintnell were honorary bearers.
Interment was in Exeter
Cemetery.
HAROLD ZEHR
Harold Zehr passed away in
ii St. Joseph's hospital, Tuesday,
February 3, 1970 in his 44th
year.
He is survived by his wife,
Laurene Gingerich; two
daughters Dianne and Angelea;
three sons, Dwight, Gerald and
Terry all at home; his parents,

Wellesley; three brothers,
Stanley, Gerald and Paul all of
Kitchener, five sisters, Miss Mary

funeral will be conducted from
the Blake Mennonite Church at

The Anglican Church Women
of St. James' Church,
Clandeboye met at the Rectory
in Lucan Thursday, January
29th. Rev. L.A. Carson was the
host, Mrs. Arnold Lewis, the
president, presided at the
meeting. Mr. Carson gave the
Bible Studey on 'Fasting' from
Matthew 6: 16-21. Mrs. A, Hill
was in charge of the programme.
Refreshments were served by
Mrs. K. O'Neil and Mrs. Rae
Hodgins.
ANNUAL MEETING
Annual meeting of
Clandeboye United Church was
presided over by Rev. W.C.
Tupling with 13 present. In the
absence of Rea Neil, Mrs. Gerald
Lynn was appointed recording
secretary for the meeting.
William Northgrave was
appointed honorary elder and
Gerald Lynn was appointed as
an elder.
Ralph Lynn was elected to
the board of stewards.
Mr. Tupling presented nine
questions, "Involvement
Quotient" to the congregation.

Blackbird passed away suddenly
WELLINGTON ROY HAW
Wellington Roy Haist of
Exeter, formerly of Stephen
Township, Passed away in
Doctor's Hospital, St.
Petersburg, Florida in his 76th
year after a short illness, January
1970.
He was a Son of the late Fred
Haist and the late Magdalena
Brown of Crediton. He was the
beloved husband of Irene Louise

(Willed), whom he married in
921.
Mr, Haist was a brick and tile
manufacturer 1921-1943. He
continued farming in Stephen
Township until retiring to
Exeter eight years ago.
He served on the Township
and County Council of Stephen
Township for a number of years
and was a promoter to
remodelling the Town Hall in
Crediton Community Centre.
Mr. Haist was a faithful
member of Crediton Zion
United Church and member of
CIC Class. He served in the
Canadian Army (World War I),
was a member of Canadian
Legion and was Shriner in the
Lebanon Forest Masonic Lodge,
Exeter.
He leaves to mourn, four
daughters; two sons and 19
grandchildren. He was
predeceased by one daughter
and one son at infancy. Mr.
Haist is survived by four
daughters, Mrs. Oren (Bernice)
Grace, Gibraltar, Mich; Mrs.
Lloyd (Helen) Jones, Exeter;
Mrs. Almer (Myrtle) Passmore,
Exeter; Mrs. Lorne (Doris)
Listoen, Comox, B.C.; two sons,
Frederick, of London and
Maurice of Stephen Township.
three sisters, Mrs. Laura Gaiser
of St. Thomas, Mrs. Emmety
Fahrner of Crediton and Mrs.
Roy Rats of Dashwood; two
brothers, Everett Haist of
Dashwood and Herb Haist of
Jacksonville, Florida; and
nineteen grandchildren.
The funeral was from
Crediton Zion Church, Tuesday,
February 3 with Rev. Douglas
Warren officiating.
The R. C. Dinney Funeral
Home was in charge of the
arrangements. The pallbearers
were Sam Lawson, Charles
Glanville, Ray Wuerth, Ted
Lamp ort, Bill Triebner, and
Teo Van Steeg.
Larry Jones, David Passmore,
Dennis Passmore, Murray Haist
were the flowerbearers.
EMMERSON RAY BROOK
Emmerson Brook passed
away at Strathroy Hospital on
January 28. He was formerly of
Usborne Township and was in
his 62nd year.
The funeral was conducted
from the R. C. Dinney Funeral
Home on January 31, with Rev.
Robert Wilson officiating.
The pallbearers were Warren
Sanders, Gordon Johns, Norman
Johns, Norman Jaques, Roy
Pepper and Jim Wilson.
Interment was in Zion
Cemetery.

She is survived by one sister
and one brother, Mrs. Millicent

Haskett Funeral Home, Lucan,
January 30th.
Pallbearers were Chas.
Coughlin, Eric Hodgins, Allan
Hill, Gary Kirk, Russell Kirk and
Sullivan Massa.
Interment will be in Walpole
Island.

Prayer was held at 12:45 p.m.
The Sunday School met during
the service.

Mrs. Omar Cunningham
returned home from St. Joseph's
hospital Saturday.
Mrs. Roy Cunningham, after
three weeks in Victoria Hospital,
is able to be home again.
Rae Neil has been very sick
with the flu.
The first Hensall Winter
Carnival was a huge success with
good crowds attending all
events.
Sponsored by all groups and
organizations in Hensall district
the three-day event got
underway Friday night with
hockey games, a dance and
selection of a Carnival Queen
and concluded Sunday
afternoon with snowmobile
races and a hockey game.
Friday night at the Hensall
arena, three. Hensall minor
hockey clubs had little trouble
in disposing of their opposition
from Adastral Park, Clinton.
The novice club opened the
night with an 8-0 win, the pee
wees followed with a 6-0 win
and the bantams were victorious
by a score of 8-3.
At the conclusion of Friday's
dance, Miss Diane Cleave was
crowned Queen of the Carnival
by 1967 Queen Marie Campbell.
Bob Baker and Lloyd Mousseau
were in charge of the contest
arrangements.
Runners-up to the Queen
were Miss Linda Koehler and
Miss Kathy Hendrick. There
were a total of ten contestants.

the highway.
Damage was listed at $130.
During the past week, the
local detachment officers
charged seven persons under the
Highway Traffic Act and issued
warnings to another 36.
One person was charged
under the Liquor Control Act.
Slight damages
in town crashes
Damages of less than $300
resulted from two accidents
investigated during the past
week by the Exeter Police
Department.
The first occurred late
Tuesday afternoon on Main
street, north of Alexander
between vehicles driven by
Harold Kendrick, 174 Andrew
street and Katherine Regier, 523
Mary street.
Total damages were estimated
at $200 by Constable George
Robertson,
Less than an hour later,
Robertson was called to the
corner of William and John
streets to check on a mishap.
Involved were vehicles driven by
Margaret Carter, RR 1,
Clandeboye and Keith
Wilmshurst, 386 Carling street.
Damage was listed at $80.

The Annual Vestry Meeting
of Trivitt Memorial Anglican
Church was held Wednesday,
January 28 preceded by a
pot-luck supper.
Those present were asked to
stand in memory of the
following who had passed away
from the congregation during
the past year: Miss Hettie Sweet,
Mrs. S. L. Bawden and Mr.
Calvin Harold MacKenzie.
In his report the rector, Rev.
G. A. Anderson, referred to
improvements which have been
made to the Church including
the Rose window in the South
Transept which was releaded,
the storm windows placed on all
these windows, new carpet laid
in the aisle by the congregation
and in the Vestry by the
Anglican Church Women, the
entrance porch carpeted and a
new table donated for there, a
new Lectern Bible presented to
the Church, new linen cloth and
dust cover for the altar; new
steps outside Vestry and
cupboards remodeled in Vestry,
chancel steps, pulpit and altar
restored to original position,
church windows and Parish Hall
windows painted outside and
two new sets of steps built and a
new cable replacing the old for
bells in the belfry. A great deal
of this work was volunteer
labour.

at sorority meet
The Beta Sigma Phi Sorority
heard Mrs. Beth Jamieson speak
on the history of dress when
they met at the home of Mrs.
Richard Weber, Tuesday
evening.
Mrs. Jamieson gave an
informative talk on headgear and
modeled hats dating from the
late 19th century to the present
day.
Members responsible for the
program were Mrs. Ron Bogart
and Mrs. Richard Weber.
Mrs. Kevin Delbridge and
Mrs. Tom Duffy assisted the
hostess.

occasions,
Bill Bell won the "B" stock
event and finished second in two
other classes while John Snell,
Lionel Wilder, Brad Mousseau
and Fred and John Elder also
finished in the money in several
events.
John Neilands was the winner
in the senior division of the
snow sculpturing contest while
Tracey and Tammy Turner were
best in the junior section.

during the weekend and the

Arena Saturday night with

Mrs. Howard Klumpp and her
father, Henry Simpson have
returned home following a
lengthy visit in New York. It
took twenty-two and a half
hours to return due to the bad
weather. The trip was made by
train.
