Phone 2274517 Correspondent; Mras Frances Saward: Annual meeting held at .Clandeboye church District farmer dies in hospital William Francis Mcllhargey, passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital, London, Sunday, January 11, 1970 in his 72nd year. He is survived by his wife, the former Kathleen Rowena Boyle; three daughters, (Mary) Mrs. John Keogh, London; (Helen) Mrs. Gordon Foran, Auburn; Kathleen, London and one son, Joseph RR No. 3 Lucan; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Heenan, Lucan, Mrs. Katherine Ryan, Dublin and 13 grandchildren. Son of the late Zachariah Mcllhargey and Ann Sweeney, Mr. Mcllhargey was born in London Township. He later moved to Lot 23, Concession 9, Bidduiph where he farmed until ill health forced his retirement. After resting in the C. Haskett and Son Funeral Home, Lucan, Requiem High Mass was sung in St. Patrick's Church, Bidduiph, Wednesday, January 14, 1970 with Rev. J. A. Bricklin officiating. Rev. J. Graham, a cousin, was present in the sanctuary. Interment was in St. Patrick's cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs. Harold Ryan, John Dewan, William Heenan, Thomas Mitchell, Leo Boyle and Paul Toohey. Couples club for Act Fast The Couples Club met Wednesday with the new president, Bob Patterson conducting the business. Recommendations passed were that the group re-register for "Act Fast" and that the Clandeboye United Church Couples be asked to join the Lu can organization. A committee of the president and Gordon Froats are to plan a dance for April. The worship theme was "What is Time?" and a poem, "No Time for God". was read. Another article read was "Take time to try God out." Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Toten, London, showed slides of India and in particular, Dr. Grahams' Homes for Children. The Club adopted an Anglo-Indian girl who lives in one of these homes. The officers for 1970 are: presidents, Mr. & Mrs. Bob Patterson; vice presidents, Mr. & Mrs. Stuart McLellan; secretaries, Mr. & Mrs. William Froats; treasurers, Mr. & Mrs. Don Abbott; and membership committee, Mr. & Mrs. Don Maguire. Mrs. Jim Flood reported Saturday that her mother, Mrs. Francis Saward, was improving but would not be able to return to Lucan for some time. Explorers make valentine cards The Explorers met January 19 with 38 members present. Joan Barker was in charge of games. Mrs. William Froats told the second part of the story, "The Mysterious Mr. Cobb." Several girls put on a skit to review the first part of the story. tried stamps were collected for the Bible Society. The worship theme was "People Walking together with God' and was led by Lorraine Lewis, Karen Mason and Cheryl Hardy. Fun songs were enjoyed by the girls and they were shown samples of homemade valentines. Each member is to make a funny or pretty card and bring it to the next meeting, February 2. Former resident dies at Milton Mrs. Fanny C. Booth, 89, passed away in Milton Sunday, January 25, 1970. She was the wife of the late Frank D. Booth of Lucan who predeceased her in 1935. He was a former operator of the Lucan Creamery. One brother, George Ireland of Burlington survives. Funeral Services were held in the Smith Funeral Home Burlington on Tuesday January 27. Interment was in Woodland Cemetery, Hamilton, Ont. Former resident dies in Hamilton Mrs, Evelyn E. McLean, 74, passed away in Hamilton Wednesday, January 21, 1970. She was the daughter of the late Rev. John and Sarah MacLean and wife of the late John McLean (1957) of Lucan, former owner of the Lucan Creamery. She is survived by one son John M. McLean of Sarnia and one daughter Joan (Mrs. Robert W. Gregory) of Chippawa, two brothers 0. E. MacLean of Montreal and Willard MacLean of Swansea Wales, and 6 grandchildren. Funeral was held from the Murdy Funeral Home, Lucan to Lucan United Church where service was conducted by the Rev. W. C. Tupling Saturday, January 24. Interment was in St. James Cemetery Clandeboye, Ontario. The annual meeting of Cromarty Presbyterian Church was held in the church schoolroom Thursday, January 15. Rev. W. Jarvis presided and opened the meeting with scripture and prayer. Mrs. Robert Laing was appointed secretary. Elected to board of managers were: Hugh Scott, Gordon Laing, Robert Laing. Other members of the board are Alex Miller, James Miller, Carlyle Meikle, John Wallace, Larry Gardiner, Sam McCurdy, Mrs. Charles Douglas, Mrs. Gordon Scott. Other officers for 1970 are: auditors, John Wallace, Eldon Allen; Sunday school superintendent, Mrs. T. L. Scott; library committee, Mrs. John Templeman, Mrs. T. L. Scott, Mrs. Gordon Scott; recording secretary, Mrs. Sam McCurdy; everyday convener, Mrs. Calder McKaig; Cradle Roll, Mrs. Carter Kerslake; Cemetery committee, Calder McKaig, T. L. Scott, Ken McKellar, Sam McCurdy, John "Learning for Lent Series" meetings will be conducted each Wednesday morning from February 18 — March 18 in Lucan United Church at 9:30 A.M. The meetings are open to all people in the Lucan and Clan deboye communities. Both infant and toddlers' nurseries will be prepared to care for children. Capable leaders will provide an active type of "Interest Centre" or an "Armchair Vacation". A study from God Reconciles and Makes Free and prepared by Rev. Dr. D. Mathers will continue through the five Wednesdays. Planned programs are available and interested people are asked to register now. THE UNITED CHURCH "That the World may believe," was the sermon topic of Rev. W. C. Tupling Sunday. The lesson was read by Allan Melanson. ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the congregation will be Thursday evening. All members, both young and old are invited to attend. YOUTH SERVICE A youth service is being arranged for -February 8. The junior choir will 'sing and all ' youth groups *- will attend as a body. Hoggarth; trustees, Gordon Scott, William Miller, Nelson Howe. Gerald Carey moved a vote of appreciation to Mr. Jarvis for his services to the Cromarty congregation. Board of Cromhenex was formed in December 1969 by board members from Cromarty Hensall and Exeter churches. Carlyle Meikle and Jim Miller will represent Cromarty. The Ladies' Aid of Cromarty church met at the home of Mrs. Eldon Allen. Mrs. Allen presided and opened the meeting with a New Year's Message. Mrs. T. L. Scott led in devotions and read from "Reconciliation in a Broken World and Janet Allen played a piano solo, Mozarts "Hallelujah Chorus". Mrs. Laverne Wallace read thank you letters from persons who had received shut-in boxes at Christmas. The roll-call was payment of fees and a favorite winter hobby. Curling, reading, embroidery and piecing quilts were the most popular. It was decided to make layettes to be ready by the March meeting, quilt two quilts for Mrs. Moore, make two Colonial Lady quilts for Mrs. Denton Taylor of Belleville. Mrs. Robert Laing presided at the piano for some New Year hymns. Lunch was served by the hostess, assisted by Mrs. Charles Douglas. PERSONALS T. L. Scott is a patient in Seaforth Community hospital. The Boy Scout Deer Patrol are holding their Tuesday night meeting at the home of David Templeman for the remainder of this month. Maurice Ruston is Patrol leader. Mrs. Robert Laing, Mrs. T. L. R. A. Carson who spoke on the question "Is Mission Work doing them harm?" He said the answer to the question lies in the mortality rate of Missionary areas where only two of twelve children live to thirty years of age. Most die in infancy. Next Sunday, the Second Sunday before Lent, the Sunday School will meet at 9:45 a.m. The service of Holy Communion will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. LEAGUE OF LOYALTY A League of Loyalty pin was presented to Robin Kraul by Mr. Carson at the morning service. LIONS CLUB Zurich Lions club held their regular dinner meeting January 26 at the Dashwood Hotel with 24 members present. President Lion, Valentine Becker called the meeting to order. Lion secretary Louis Willert read the minutes of the last regular meeting and Director's meeting. He also reported on the recent New Year's Eve dance held by the club. After the reports were read which showed a very successful year the election of officers followed as follows: Arnold Cunningham, rector's warden; Mr. Wayne Carroll, peoples Warden. A board of management was elected. A vote of appreciation was given for the use of the Greenlee home for the meeting, Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Davis were guests recently with Mr. & Mrs. M. H. Elston, Centralia and Sunday they were guests of Mr. & , Mrs. Murray Hamilton, Parkhill. Joan Barker was chosen Snowmobile Queen and crowned at a dance in Strathroy Friday evening. She will preside over the carnival in Strathroy starting February 8. Mr. & Mrs. Tom Kooy were guests Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. Maurice MacDonald, Grand Bend. Mrs. Kooy remained for a few days. ROBERT MARK (ROBBIE) VAN DORSSELAER Robbie Van Dorsselaer passed away at Victoria Hospital, January 27, 1970 in his fourth year. Surviving are his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Ray Van Dorsselaer and his two grandmothers, Mrs. Wm. Haugh, Dashwood and Mrs. Peter Van Dorsselaer, RR 1, Hay. The body is resting at the T. Hoffman and Sons Funeral Home where Rev. Earl Steinmen will officiate at the service held Friday, January 30. Interment will be in theLutheranCemetery. Henderson died suddenly at his home in Mr. & Mrs. Newton Hay ter, Mrs. Fred McLinchey accompanied by Mr. & Mrs. Willis Hayter of Grand Bend spent the weekend with relatives in Detroit. The Annual congregational meeting of the United Church was held Wednesday evening in the Sunday School rooms. Reports were given showing a successful year in all organizations. Mrs. Ed. Bloomfield of Grand Bend visited last Thursday with her mother, Mrs. Arthur Brophey. The ladieg of the Corbett Community Centre made a quilt recently and quilted it last Wednesday. Tickets are being sold to raise money for the Community Centre. Mrs. Olive McCallum visited last week with relatives in London. Mr. & Mrs. Elzar Mousseau of Kippen visited Sunday evening with Mr. & Mrs. Carman Woodburn. The Berean Class of the United Church are planning a crokinole party in the Sunday School rooms Friday evening. A number of people in this vicinity have been ill with the flu. Marley and Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Johnson to dinner, Monday evening on the occasion of the Mills 25th wedding anniversary. Prior to moving to Clandeboye in 1968 Mr. ' Henderson had resided at Ilderton. He is survived by his wife, Petra (Christensen) Henderson and one son, James of Melbourne. The funeral was conducted from the C. Haskett and Son Funeral Home, Lucan by Rev. R. A, Carson on January 26. The pallbearers were Maurice Simpson, Allan Scott, Eric Hodgins, Arnold Blake, Willy Hodgins and Ted Jensen. Interment was in St. James Cemetery, PERSONALS Mrs. Omar Cunningham has had to return to St. Joseph's Hospital. Mrs, Ray Cunningham is still in Victoria Hospital. Miss Mary Northgrave, is a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital. Elimville folk enjoy euchre By MRS. ROSS SKINNER ELIMVILLE The Elimville Women's Institute Euchre was held at Elimville Hall Monday evening. The committee in charge were Mrs. Howard Pym, Mrs. Lorne Johns and Mrs. Ward Hem. Winners were ladies high, Mrs. Floyd Cooper; men's high, Floyd Cooper; lone hands, John Batten; lucky cup, Mrs. Allen Johns and dutch auction, Wm. Lamport. The next euchre will be at Elimville Hall Monday evening, February 9. PERSONALS Mr. & Mrs. John Batten, Sharon, Helen and Ralph visited Sunday with Mrs. James Robinson of St. Marys. By MISS ELLA MORLOCK CREDITON The monthly meeting of the Women's Institute was held in the Community Hall, Wednesday, January 21 with the president, Mrs. Harvey Hodgins, presiding. Roll call "A Pioneer Incident You Have Heard" was answered by eighteen members. Mrs. Cliff Kenney reported for Good Cheer. It was decided to cater for the Federation of Agriculture Banquet, February 17. Mrs. Art Attfield, convener of Citizenship and Education, chaired the program. Mrs. Aaron Wein read "Former School Days" and "Goals for the Year to Make Contented Living." Mrs. Leeda Sorensen of Exeter favoured with several piano selections. The motto "Citizens of Canada", prepared by Mrs. Attfield, was read by Mrs. Gerald Dearing. Mrs. Attfield read "Raising Children" and "The Now Generation." Guest speaker, Mrs. William Mueller, told how she had obtained Canadian citizenship. Lunch was served by hostesses Mrs. Attfield, Mrs. Harvey Andrews, Mrs. Dearing and Mrs. Wein. PERSONALS Mr. & Mrs. William Smith and Gerald attended the funeral of Oscar Voelker, brother of Mrs. Smith, at Pigeon, Michigan, Monday. Mr. Voelker was the only brother in the family. Four sisters survive. Mr. Voelker is" also survived by his own immediate family, his wife, four daughters and two sons. LUCAN IGA Mrs. Erie Young, Mrs. Gordon Jones and Mr. & Mrs. Robert Coughlin have returned from two weeks vacation in St. Petersburg, Florida. Mr. & Mrs. Evan Hodgins called on friends at the McCormick home, Sunday. John Park is on the sick list. Miss Lina Abbott, convener of First Shuffle Board tournament at the McCormick Home may not be a grand champion but she was at least on the winning team. Mr. & Mrs. Earl Atkinson are recovering from their recent illness and were able to visit Mr. & Mrs. Don Maguire and family Thursday, and Mr. & Mrs. Harvey Latta. Sunday. ORANGE EUCHRE PARTY The Orange euchre party was held in Lucan with nine tables in play. The winners were: Lady's high, Mrs. Heber Shute; Lady's lone hand, Mrs. Lawrence Beckett; men's high, Heber Shute; men's lone hand, Jim Wilson; a box of groceries was won by Mrs. G. Atkinson. Next euchre will be February 4. Turf club hold successful dance The Lucan Turf Club held their annual dance at the Lucan Arena January 23 which was very successful. The first door prize donated by Scotts Elevators Ltd. was won by Harold Cobleigl: . The second prize donated by Young's Dry Goods was won by Mrs. Jack Hardy. Tickets were sold on a horse blanket donated by the Ontario Harness Horsemens Association with proceeds going to Cecil Crandon, who has been on the sick list, since November.
