District farmer
dies in hospital
William Francis Mcllhargey,
passed away in St. Joseph's
Hospital, London, Sunday,
January 11, 1970 in his 72nd
year.
He is survived by his wife, the
former Kathleen Rowena Boyle;
three daughters, (Mary) Mrs.
John Keogh, London; (Helen)
Mrs. Gordon Foran, Auburn;
Kathleen, London and one son,
Joseph RR No. 3 Lucan; two
sisters, Mrs. Mary Heenan,
Lucan, Mrs. Katherine Ryan,
Dublin and 13 grandchildren.
Son of the late Zachariah
Mcllhargey and Ann Sweeney,
Mr. Mcllhargey was born in
London Township. He later
moved to Lot 23, Concession 9,
Bidduiph where he farmed until
ill health forced his retirement.
After resting in the C.
Haskett and Son Funeral Home,
Lucan, Requiem High Mass was
sung in St. Patrick's Church,
Bidduiph, Wednesday, January
14, 1970 with Rev. J. A.
Bricklin officiating. Rev. J.
Graham, a cousin, was present in
the sanctuary. Interment was in
St. Patrick's cemetery.
Pallbearers were Messrs.
Harold Ryan, John Dewan,
William Heenan, Thomas
Mitchell, Leo Boyle and Paul
Toohey.
Couples club
for Act Fast
The Couples Club met
Wednesday with the new
president, Bob Patterson
conducting the business.
Recommendations passed were
that the group re-register for
"Act Fast" and that the
Clandeboye United Church
Couples be asked to join the
Lu can organization.
A committee of the president
and Gordon Froats are to plan a
dance for April.
The worship theme was
"What is Time?" and a poem,
"No Time for God". was read.
Another article read was "Take
time to try God out."
Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Toten,
London, showed slides of India
and in particular, Dr. Grahams'
Homes for Children.
The Club adopted an
Anglo-Indian girl who lives in
one of these homes.

Mrs. Jim Flood reported
Saturday that her mother, Mrs.
Francis Saward, was improving
but would not be able to return
to Lucan for some time.
Explorers make
valentine cards
The Explorers met January
19 with 38 members present.
Joan Barker was in charge of
games.
Mrs. William Froats told the
second part of the story, "The
Mysterious Mr. Cobb." Several
girls put on a skit to review the
first part of the story.
tried stamps were collected
for the Bible Society.
The worship theme was
"People Walking together with
God' and was led by Lorraine
Lewis, Karen Mason and Cheryl
Hardy.
Fun songs were enjoyed by
the girls and they were shown
samples of homemade
valentines. Each member is to
make a funny or pretty card and
bring it to the next meeting,
February 2.
Former resident
dies at Milton
Mrs. Fanny C. Booth, 89,
passed away in Milton Sunday,
January 25, 1970. She was the
wife of the late Frank D. Booth
of Lucan who predeceased her in
1935. He was a former operator
of the Lucan Creamery. One
brother, George Ireland of
Burlington survives.
Funeral Services were held in
the Smith Funeral Home
Burlington on Tuesday January
27. Interment was in Woodland
Cemetery, Hamilton, Ont.
Former resident
dies in Hamilton
Mrs, Evelyn E. McLean, 74,
passed away in Hamilton
Wednesday, January 21, 1970.
She was the daughter of the late
Rev. John and Sarah MacLean
and wife of the late John
McLean (1957) of Lucan,
former owner of the Lucan
Creamery.
She is survived by one son
John M. McLean of Sarnia and
one daughter Joan (Mrs. Robert
W. Gregory) of Chippawa, two
brothers 0. E. MacLean of
Montreal and Willard MacLean
of Swansea Wales, and 6
grandchildren.
Funeral was held from the
Murdy Funeral Home, Lucan to
Lucan United Church where
service was conducted by the
Rev. W. C. Tupling Saturday,
January 24. Interment was in St.
James Cemetery Clandeboye,
Ontario.

was held in the church
schoolroom Thursday, January
15. Rev. W. Jarvis presided and
opened the meeting with
scripture and prayer. Mrs.
Robert Laing was appointed
secretary.

meetings will be conducted each
Wednesday morning from
February 18 — March 18 in
Lucan United Church at 9:30
A.M.
The meetings are open to all
people in the Lucan and
Clan deboye communities.
Both infant and toddlers'
nurseries will be prepared to care
for children.
Capable leaders will provide
an active type of "Interest
Centre" or an "Armchair
Vacation". A study from God
Reconciles and Makes Free and
prepared by Rev. Dr. D. Mathers
will continue through the five
Wednesdays.
Planned programs are
available and interested people
are asked to register now.
THE UNITED CHURCH
"That the World may
believe," was the sermon topic
of Rev. W. C. Tupling Sunday.
The lesson was read by Allan
Melanson.
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the
congregation will be Thursday
evening. All members, both
young and old are invited to
attend.
YOUTH SERVICE
A youth service is being
arranged for -February 8. The
junior choir will 'sing and all '
youth groups *- will attend as a
body.

The Ladies' Aid of Cromarty
church met at the home of Mrs.
Eldon Allen. Mrs. Allen presided
and opened the meeting with a
New Year's Message. Mrs. T. L.
Scott led in devotions and read
from "Reconciliation in a
Broken World and Janet Allen
played a piano solo, Mozarts
"Hallelujah Chorus".
Mrs. Laverne Wallace read
thank you letters from persons
who had received shut-in boxes
at Christmas. The roll-call was
payment of fees and a favorite
winter hobby. Curling, reading,
embroidery and piecing quilts
were the most popular.
It was decided to make
layettes to be ready by the
March meeting, quilt two quilts
for Mrs. Moore, make two
Colonial Lady quilts for Mrs.
Denton Taylor of Belleville.
Mrs. Robert Laing presided at
the piano for some New Year
hymns. Lunch was served by the
hostess, assisted by Mrs. Charles
Douglas.

The service of Morning Prayer
was taken by the Rev. R. A.
Carson who spoke on the
question "Is Mission Work doing
them harm?" He said the answer
to the question lies in the
mortality rate of Missionary
areas where only two of twelve
children live to thirty years of
age. Most die in infancy.
Next Sunday, the Second
Sunday before Lent, the Sunday
School will meet at 9:45 a.m.
The service of Holy Communion
will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m.

Carson at the morning service.

read which showed a very

He is survived by his wife,

The funeral was conducted
from the C. Haskett and Son
Funeral Home, Lucan by Rev.
R. A, Carson on January 26. The
pallbearers were Maurice
Simpson, Allan Scott, Eric
Hodgins, Arnold Blake, Willy
Hodgins and Ted Jensen.
Interment was in St. James
Cemetery,

Wednesday, January 21 with the
president, Mrs. Harvey Hodgins,
presiding. Roll call "A Pioneer
Incident You Have Heard" was
answered by eighteen members.
Mrs. Cliff Kenney reported for
Good Cheer. It was decided to
cater for the Federation of
Agriculture Banquet, February
17.
Mrs. Art Attfield, convener of
Citizenship and Education,
chaired the program. Mrs. Aaron
Wein read "Former School
Days" and "Goals for the Year
to Make Contented Living." Mrs.
Leeda Sorensen of Exeter
favoured with several piano
selections. The motto "Citizens
of Canada", prepared by Mrs.
Attfield, was read by Mrs.
Gerald Dearing. Mrs. Attfield
read "Raising Children" and
"The Now Generation."
Guest speaker, Mrs. William
Mueller, told how she had
obtained Canadian citizenship.
Lunch was served by
hostesses Mrs. Attfield, Mrs.
Harvey Andrews, Mrs. Dearing
and Mrs. Wein.

Mr. & Mrs. William Smith and
Gerald attended the funeral of
Oscar Voelker, brother of Mrs.
Smith, at Pigeon, Michigan,
Monday. Mr. Voelker was the
only brother in the family. Four
sisters survive. Mr. Voelker is"
also survived by his own
immediate family, his wife, four
daughters and two sons.

Turf club hold
successful dance
The Lucan Turf Club held
their annual dance at the Lucan
Arena January 23 which was
very successful.
The first door prize donated
by Scotts Elevators Ltd. was
won by Harold Cobleigl: . The
second prize donated by
Young's Dry Goods was won by
Mrs. Jack Hardy.
Tickets were sold on a horse
blanket donated by the Ontario
Harness Horsemens Association
with proceeds going to Cecil
Crandon, who has been on the
sick list, since November. The
blanket was won by Gerald
Pedden.
